To ask if anyone has had surgery for piles?

I feel very embarrassed and haven’t told anyone other than my partner that I’m having it done.

If you’ve had it, what was recovery like? How long did you take off work?

They've said that you need an emima (not a clue how that’s spelt) beforehand? Is that as embarrassing and as awkward as it sounds?

I’ve told work I’m having an operation but not told them what it’s for. I’m hoping I can ask for a sick note that just says something general like recovering from surgery.

Well I had my op on Friday. Felt fine after and yesterday went out and got my nails redone, out for a coffee and the lunch and a little walk.

I guess pain relief much have still be in my system because last night, all night and today I’m in absolute agony.

it also feels like there is stitches. And my lady parts hurt too. Over 12 years ago I had an episiotomy repair so there is scar tissue down there. That’s currently very very swollen and sore.

I'm feeling very sorry for myself at the moment.

My legs and lower back hurt so much. Nothing I do seems to help. I don’t know why they hurt so much.

Nah work in nhs. When staff apparently are in nhs they will try everything to avoid surgery.

I often see Gastro state we won’t you above bmi 35 for banding surgery so left to suffer.

Had annual fissure and piles since 18 🥲 blood and brown leakage from no 2 since beautiful 2000. Couple of times strong cream but few and fair between.

Are you ok there?

Quite a few years ago I was referred to hospital and they gave me a date about a week later. So not much time to worry. It was day surgery had to be there at 7am. The enema wasn’t that bad just had to go to the toilet quickly. The first few days were very painful especially sitting down quite a range of tablets one I was warned about would make me feel woozy I felt that I was floating so quickly gave them up. Glad I had them done it was so painful especially at night.

I had the op Friday but have probably done too much yesterday and today because of boredom.
I can’t sit or lie comfortably no matter what I do. The painkillers are helping somewhat but not totally.

Where the stitches are I can feel a small lump so I’m really hoping that goes away once it’s healed.

It really is absolute agony. I had this surgery two years ago. I was warned by the surgeon that it was extremely painful recovery and advised to take three weeks off work. The only advice I can give is get ahead of the pain with regular analgesia.

Not sure, dealt with anal fissures and piles since 18.

Now in my 40’s

Just thrown a super strength cream at times when *lucky**^. Always had the big bmi which I suppose has let the nhs off. Oh her fault she could have lost weight but I don’t wish anal fissures or tears on anyone.

FeralAlleyCat · 20/08/2026 10:22

I’ll be a week tomorrow. Still can’t sit properly or for long. I’m going to try a very short journey in the car later and see how I go.

The antibiotics and laxative runs out tomorrow so I will buy my own laxative and take a little each day until I’m fully healed.

leg/back stiffness is probably just because of the position you’d have been in for the operation.

FeralAlleyCat · 20/08/2026 15:04

Your right. The aching has calmed down so much now.

I’ve no idea when to go back to work though.

Awww, it sounds horrible! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

HouseMouseSamosa · 21/08/2026 02:57

I did, and I didn’t have an enema, I just had to drink the horrible stuff that clears you out. Recovery was ok although my first 💩 afterwards was an experience!

The bad news for me is that I may as well not have bothered as they just came back.

HouseMouseSamosa · 21/08/2026 02:58

Oops sorry just seen you’ve already had surgery, wishing you a speedy recovery.

oviraptor21 · 21/08/2026 13:03

Did you get the two weeks off work OP?

Just take one day at a time and don't expect too much. It is well known for being a very painful recovery. I would limit sitting until you're feeling much more comfortable as that will be putting pressure on the healing wounds.

Has the lump reduced? It's probably just usual swelling but do mention to your surgeon if you haven't already.

FeralAlleyCat · 21/08/2026 16:05

Yes I was given a two week sick note. Today is one week post surgery. The lump has not gone down but it has stitches in it. I’m really hoping it goes down once they dissolve or I’ll have switched one lump for another.
