Different reactions to my nephew and I

My nephew and I are the same age (much older sister, his dad!), he’s a couple of months older than me. We’re both late 20s.

He recently took all of his annual leave at once (about 5 weeks iirc) to travel around Europe. He basically spent five weeks on the beach. I genuinely love it for him.

I have the same amount of leave but due to organisation rules can’t take it as one huge chunk without written permission, and it has to be a good reason. So instead I’m using it up in dribs and drabs to travel, some weeks away, some long weekends, a couple of midweek trips. They’re largely to the same sorts of places as my nephew.

My entire family thinks his trip was brilliant. They gush over it, talk about how wonderful it is to travel and how enriching it is.

Whenever I talk about my trips I get laughed at, “oh another holiday?” is thrown at me and I’m really tired of it. I don’t think the travel is any less meaningful because I’m doing it in short periods of time. If anything I try to do as much as possible in those times so that I make the most of the time away.

AIBU to be really fucking fed up? I’m tempted to not even tell them about my plans anymore because it really annoys me to hear the plans I’m excited for being torn to shreds because apparently they’re not long enough trips.

I don't think it's sexism (although it might be as I'm not there to hear it)
It sounds to me like your holidays are relatable. The people commenting are used to the idea of 1 or 2 week holidays so it doesn't seem exciting. But 5 weeks at once seems inconceivable to them as theyve never done it so it seems more exciting

I think this is correct. Same with the PP who mentioned the colleague going to Australia.

Nothing environmental because thankfully they are smart enough to know that commercial flights have 0 impact.

It’s things like my upcoming trip, I shared that I had a bed booked at a (reasonable) beach club in the south of France. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, it’s fancy and it seems very relaxing. It was met with a lot of disparaging comments, talking about how it’s a waste of money, how it’s overly luxurious and I didn’t really need to do it, but if my nephew talks about spending a week on the beach they gush over it!

Of course commercial flights have an impact on the environment!

I don't see how it's sexist unless there's a pattern of that otherwise? But the length of his trip is aspirational for a lot of people so it's likely just that.

doonaduvet · 04/08/2026 18:08

I completely agree it's utter bollocks! I just thought that might be why they thought that if it was your parents, or if it's your sister she might be jealous. Could be sexist as in: isn't he great looking after himself away that long. Try calling it out and see what they say.

Clairey1986 · 04/08/2026 18:06

When he spent time on the beach did he pay for a luxury place beach bed? I wonder if while being similar places you are enjoying a more luxurious experience and that is leading to the waste of money comments (I don’t agree with them, just observing).

I suspect it’s more to do with overall family dynamics which is why it grates on you so much too.

It’s €20. Just happens to be in a beach club. Literally no different to a beach bed on any other beach. It just so happens that in the south of France they’re attached to beach clubs.

rude, sneery and disrespectful

What are they actually saying to you?

“Oh another holiday?”

”Must be nice to have no responsibilities” (from my sister, who has one child who is older than I am and goes on multiple trips a year, mainly to all inclusive resorts)

”Do you really need to be going there?”

”It must be nice to do as you please”

Your sister doesn't sound sexist or sneering, but possibly envious of your youth and freedom.

Just be arsy back to them 🤷‍♀️. I get all sorts of eye rolls and comments as I spend a lot of my disposable income on travel (with husband and son), they are jealous, they aren't going to grow old with the memories you will have, one day they might realise this....or maybe they won't.

Some people don't value travel, I think it's the very best way to spend time and money but I can't be bothered trying to convince anyone else of this.

I agree it's not sexist in the slightest, they just see your nephew trip as one big adventure and your travels as over and over, let them...

alittlebithackedoff · 04/08/2026 18:02

It’s pretty fucking tiresome when they ask, just to be rude, sneery and disrespectful.

Information diet for all of them.

And start being a bit more snappy with them. They are just talking bollocks for the sake of making conversation and it sounds like they just put down what you are saying.

I'm wondering if you should compare notes with the nephew.. maybe they are also picking holes in his trips too and telling him that your trips are more organised or something...

My utterly boring MIL did this and its really annoying. Comparing notes was eye opening and made it much easier to disregard the comments.
I do understand though that it hurts because its something that is important to you being disparaged.

Its IDLE talk. Don't let it put you off. It sounds like you spend your time off doing interesting and exciting things. Be proud of that, you are finding out more about the world. Feel sorry for the people sitting around with nothing better to do than criticise it.

She’s sneery and rude.

She has just as much freedom as I do.

Not sure how this is sexism tbh

I think you need to stop worrying so much about what other people think

Most people can’t take their leave all at once so taking 5 weeks off to travel is pretty unusual so will probably get commented on more by people

SusanJJ · 04/08/2026 18:30

alittlebithackedoff · 04/08/2026 18:26

OK. Better stop mentioning your holidays then, you're not obliged to tell her about them and there can't be much pleasure in it for you .

KookyFish · 04/08/2026 18:34

Just be a complete dick back to them.....

Oh another holiday?” - yes another holiday, god I love my life.

”Must be nice to have no responsibilities” - oh absolutely, do you ever wish you choose travelling the world over kids? Now they are older you should really make more of an effort to see the world.

”Do you really need to be going there?”

  • yes, one day i will die and i will lie on my death bed and think of my time there and know i made the most of this amazing world. Are you not planning on going anywhere this year, god isnt that an awful life?

”It must be nice to do as you please” - oh absolutely, I love how I have engineered my life to have time and money to do this stuff, do you regret your life, I would hate your life personally.

RobertaFirmino · 04/08/2026 18:39

Well how dare you! How dare you, as a mere woman, do things for sheer enjoyment! Don't you know that you should be spending all your time dreaming of a white wedding and 2.4 children? Shouldn't you be putting all your efforts into finding a husband rather than going off gallivanting at the drop of a hat? And why are you wasting all this money when you could be squirrelling every single penny away for a deposit on a nice starter home in the suburbs? This simply will not do!

greenbean80 · 04/08/2026 19:09

Why do you care,

alittlebithackedoff · 04/08/2026 19:20

greenbean80 · 04/08/2026 19:09

Why do you care,

Because it’s fucking tiresome.

I’ve not had the confidence to travel alone for long. It’s a big deal for me. And for my family, who are supposed to be your biggest unconditional supporters, to constantly shit on that, is draining.

None of that is particularly awful, OP. A bit irritating, at most. Easily responded to and/or dismissed, depending on your inclinations.

Is there a reason this is bugging you so much? Is it part of an overarching pattern of them all being a bit dismissive or unpleasant?

Elsvieta · 05/08/2026 15:15

Are you taking your trips alone by any chance? Some people seem weirdly disturbed by a woman who does fun stuff alone without needing a man...

alittlebithackedoff · 04/08/2026 17:39

I kind of want to call out their sexism though because that’s clearly what it is at this point?

Misogyny and sexism beautifully illistrated.
