Anyone else mid-40s noticed intellectual/cognitive decline in some age peers?

It's freaking me out a bit tbh. Not everyone but some people increasingly seem to be losing the ability to follow conversations, make basic plans or work out how to complete tasks. It reminds me of sort of unkind feelings I used to have about older relatives or in-laws ("why does she keep pulling the push door??")

Maybe it's tiredness, maybe it's brain matter getting less springy, hope it doesn't come for me. Maybe it already has and I just haven't realised yet!

No, not at all.

If you are observing this in individuals, I would recommend trying to discuss with their family as it maybe indicative of a bigger problem.

Nope .not at all

No, I work with lots of people in this age range who are at the top of their game, and plenty of friends and family are the same.

Somerford · 02/08/2026 21:06

I'd say the people I know around that age are probably at their peak in terms of intellectual capabilities and maturity, I certainly haven't noticed anyone of that sort of age in decline.

Mid 40s is a classic age bracket for stress and the bottom of the happiness dip. Many stressful life events intersect – teens, ageing parents, peri, mortgage concerns, divorce or martial discord, general health concerns. I wouldn’t find it surprising therefore if many people in this age bracket were forgetful and distracted. Stress and worry will have that effect.

Not 40s no. 50s however is a different story

AdjectiveColourNoun · 02/08/2026 21:25

Maybe it’s perimeno. Which can also exacerbate pre-existing cognitive issues like ADHD

If they're female peers and mid to late forties I'd assume likely hormone related, eg forgetfulness or brain fog.

likelysuspect · 02/08/2026 21:28

I noticed it in me from 49 onward and its only got worse. Peri hit and my brain is like jelly now

Anti depressants have helped. Didnt notice a massive difference with HRT bu am taking it to support future health.

My DH lost lots of cognitive function in his 40s due to sleeping meds. Much better now he's stopped them.

This is me!

The death of my mother also made me go a bit loopy for a while.

It has been a tough decade.

Im still sharper than most of the women I know ten years younger though! Not sure how to explain that.

JaceLancs · 02/08/2026 21:34

Not in my 40s - I’m past 60 now and have noticed a huge change in many of my peers especially those who have now retired
Went out recently for a meal and conversation was very limited - once we’d done holidays, DC and DGC, ailments and elderly parents - they had nothing to talk about! I don’t talk shop either, but things like local news, politics, economics, social changes etc just seem to be beyond them

Doodledoggle · 02/08/2026 21:38

I am how you describe. Appalling memory. Brain fog off the charts. Can think of any words despite HRT, age 48.

DC have mentioned cognitive decline several times! It's horrible. I'm endlessly exhausted so I put it down to tiredness.

I'm always breaking things too!

SquirrelGG · 02/08/2026 21:40

No, not at all. I'm in my late 60s and haven't noticed it in any of my same age peers either.

Toastiemaker · 02/08/2026 21:46

Me. I am 44 and loosing the plot. I can't concentrate, forget things instantly and can't follow a conversation easily. I live in constant anxiety of losing my job. I am on anti depressants but they are not helping. It's scary.
