Who is in charge of the car keys?

Lighthearted- help clear up an ongoing debate in our household!

Person A and person B are married and have 2 cars, although each have their ‘own’ car they use regularly.

Sometimes it’s easier to use person A’s car for a particular trip, but person B might do the driving for various reasons.

In this scenario, whose responsibility is it to make sure the car is locked when it’s parked, and to keep hold of the keys or put them somewhere safe?

YABU: it’s person A’s car so they are responsible for locking the car and keeping keys safe, even if they aren’t driving.

YANBU: person B is driving so they are in charge of locking the car, keeping the keys safe etc.

Whoever is driving the car. Although that is assuming they have the key with them and are not relying on the one in other person’s handbag/pocket. In that case, it is the person with the key regardless of who owns the car.

TigerDroveAgain · 02/08/2026 20:36

person with the key sorts it and puts the keys away in a neutral place

Ponderingwindow · 02/08/2026 20:37

Whoever drove the car locks the car.

keys go in the key spot when they walk into the house.

2chocolateoranges · 02/08/2026 20:37

Whoever last drove the car are responsible for locking the car and making sure it’s parked safely.

TokyoSushi · 02/08/2026 20:37

Our keys don’t go in the ignition so the person whose car it is usually takes responsibility. When we had cars where the key went in the ignition then it was mostly the driver, or whoever had a bag/pockets.

TheJoyousHiker · 02/08/2026 20:38

Whoever is driving the car and there is a designated spot inside the house where all car/door keys are kept.

mondaytosunday · 02/08/2026 20:38

Whoever drives the car.

CastleCrasher · 02/08/2026 20:39

Driver responsibility always. Though we usually check with each other out of habit anyway

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 02/08/2026 20:40

Driver, always. Which can be a problem if the driver's got the key in their pocket and leaves the passenger in the car when they nip into a shop or something. The car locks and the alarm goes off 😳

Ansells · 02/08/2026 20:42

It’ll be whoever has picked up the car keys, which might be the person driving or the person whose car it is when they’re the passenger.

We really don’t differentiate between responsibility for locking our respective cars. We just do it…

DonewhatIcando · 02/08/2026 20:47

Driver responsible for locking the car and looking after the keys unless it my DP, I take my car keys off him if he driving as there's a good chance he'll lose them 🙄
He's happy to hand them over cos he knows what he's like.
Indoors all keys live in the same place unless DP has used my car, the keys could be anywhere, fallen inside his trainer, in the fridge, in the dog bed, top of microwave

hourspassed · 02/08/2026 20:49

Whoever is driving takes responsibility for the keys. DH and I have this scenario. Car each. His is faster/nicer (arguably!) so we tend to go out in his car, but I will often drive it home as I don't drink.

He drives there so keeps the keys on the outward journey and for the duration of the dinner/trip or whatever. He then gives the keys to me for the journey home then I put them away on the key hook at home. So if you get out of the drivers seat, then you are responsible for the keys. You then keep them safe when you're out or put them away once home. haha sounds very complicated but it's simple really!

Mumofoneandone · 02/08/2026 20:49

We have 2 cars and each have a set of car keys for each car. We both use my car the most and are responsible for locking the car up when we leave it.
I have my key in my bag all the time for my car and keep the other car key on a rack, should I ever need it.

JustGiveMeReason · 02/08/2026 21:04

If you mean look after the keys whilst out, then obviously the driver.

If you mean when you / they get home, the 'borrower' should return the keys to where the 'owner' likes to keep them.

Laterlife · 02/08/2026 21:08

It depends on whether there is room enough in my handbag. DH always has pockets.

ColdAsAWitches · 02/08/2026 21:08

I don't get you each don't have a set of keys. All cars come with two.

RandomUsernameHere · 02/08/2026 21:12

Whilst out, the person driving is in charge of the key and locking the car. Once home, the key is returned to the usual place where the owner/main driver of the car keeps it.

Pistachiocake · 02/08/2026 21:32

The driver. Both should have keys though. Because it's not nice when your husband takes your car to work, and your house keys are on it the keyring, and you're locked in with 2 kids a few days after the baby's birth!
Luckily he works nearby, and it only happened once.

Loulou4022 · 02/08/2026 21:33

Whoever is driving is responsible for the keys.

Sanch1 · 02/08/2026 21:40

Whoever is driving! And then in our house puts them back in the normal place that the keys all live.
