To almost feel a shred of sympathy for Tommy Robinson

He did a debate against Oxford university students recently.

His entire argument was destroyed. Every single point. Even Jacob Rees Mogg had to comment on how stupid he was.

It’s exposed what he really is - an ignorant, uneducated man who is so gripped by fear caused by a misunderstanding of the world around him, and it’s almost made me feel sorry for him. People like him have been failed - by society, by the education system, and by the people around them.

How do you envisage this happening and how soon?

chirrupybird · 02/08/2026 13:48

All extreme religion is dangerous, extreme Islam, extreme Judaism, extreme Christianity, when they insist on going back to ancient writings 'from the gods', that might have been common practise at the time when they were written actually by men. It always leads to barbarism in the name of whichever god. Most Muslims, Jews and Christians are not extremists. Not intended to only be aimed at the specific religions mentioned.

How many sharia courts currently exist in the UK and why is the answer not 'zero'?

Should all religious arbitration be banned?

And Beth Din? Catholic Tribunals?
None of them override or replace UK legislation.

Do you have a number for me?

So why have them? Why not use...the UK legislation?

There are none that have any legal status, or powers of imprisonment, etc. If people want to take moral guidance from religious leaders they can in all religions.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/08/2026 13:53

I voted YABU because I don't feel the slightest shred of sympathy for him. He has built a career out of hate while pretending to be a Christian.

chirrupybird · 02/08/2026 13:55

Started off as a football thug and has gone up in the world of thuggery.

There are around 30 Sharia “councils” in the UK but these are not courts of law. The Sharia councils’ decisions are based on Islamic religious laws and cannot overrule the decisions of UK courts or make decisions that are contrary to UK law.

And you think they decided on little insignificant uk rather than say, Canada, Mexico, China? Or indeed, just staying the UAE laughing in oil money?

As his extensive criminal record reveals.
Abiding by UK legislation isn’t so much of a priority after all.

I know you’ve posted to amplify the debate however of course he is decimated intellectually and made to look like a cunt because he is a cunt, utterly vile and racist. He is a violent grifter stirring up hatred and I know where my sympathies lie.

But was he decimated intellectually? I don't think so.

I don't like him at all. I think he is a violent thug and a racist. But the arguments he put at the Oxford Union were mostly pretty strong ones.

When I summarised them here no-one has has leapt in to point out how they are trivially defeated. Maybe you can?

His side lost the vote by 57-41 in the chamber also, not really a decimation.

Do you really imagine the white men who hold the power positions in our society are going to sit back and watch Muslim men take that power away from them? Do you think the non Muslim billionaires who control so much are going to allow themselves to be ousted in favour of this new regime?
Do you think that everyone here who currently controls everything is so stupid they'd allow it to be taken from them, and it's only you and Tommy Robinson who can see it coming, so must save us all?

Why is there a need for any sharia courts in the UK?

AlternativeView · 02/08/2026 14:12

@GeneralPeter posts like the ops really annoy me becuause I don't want to he defending Tommy R.
However I have not listened to the whole thing. A clip posted earlier the Oxford uni says " Tommy and your thugs and outside there are people "ironing against you ". Now isn't that a stupid comment ? Calling him a thug but simultansoiky using people against Tommy rioting as somehow ok ?? And how her benevolence has protected him ?
And claiming that "no Muslims " believe that isis are following scriptures ? Again when isis had people in orange jumpsuits beheading them there was lots of evidence that they were following scripture and that in Islam unlike said the Catholic faith there is no one supreme head like the pope so these hadiths etc can be interpreted like anyone wants them to be

Because- as I said- British Muslims

As long as over all British laws ,freedoms and equalites are upheld in these courts there is nothing wrong with them.

They are not courts of law. They give religious advice to Muslims. The (scholarly) advice is from sharia law, which is a religious “law”

it’s not actual law. It’s meaningless in the context of the British legal system. It’s no different to advising people on MN to LTB. It’s just dispute resolution.

there are many religious and non religious courts that do this for all sorts of people.

likelysuspect · 02/08/2026 14:23

SerendipityJane · 02/08/2026 12:35

TR cited various acts and sayings drawn on the Quran or hadith that to modern secular ears are barbaric (treatment of homosexuals, those who have sex outside marriage, child marriage, treatment of prisoners of war, cleansing Muslim lands of Jews and Christians), in support of the argument that we should be 'suspicious' of Islam.

Have you read "The Bible" ?

Our modern laws dont allow those things that are in the bible that are akin to those acts though do they?

Our culture doesnt tolerate that

Lomonald · 02/08/2026 14:25

Shedmistress · 02/08/2026 14:08

Why is there a need for any sharia courts in the UK?

It isn't a "court" .doesn't have any bearing on UK Laws different religious cultures live in Britain why are you frightened of Muslims specifically?

likelysuspect · 02/08/2026 14:26

GeneralPeter · 02/08/2026 13:05

I agree. My personal view is that Islam needs a Reformation before the modern, secular West should be comfortable with it. (Ditto I think Christianity did, and thankfully got one, plus further softening later).

I think there are loads of really good and serious arguments both for and against that position.

I don't think pretending it's somehow a trivial issue or a racist thought helps anyone.

I agree, its much like medieval Christianity was, and our laws alongside it. Its the same age as mediveal Christianity.
