AIBU to consider probation officer training in my fifties?

in my fifties, currently doing a pretty dead end job. Saw an advert for probation officer trainees..is this a bad idea? Am I too old? The training would take around 2 years. Anyone know anyone who does this job? What is the reality like? Thanks

Sorry, I think you'd be crazy to do this. It's one thing working in probation if you've done it for years and another completely if you're new to it. It's a difficult job and I think it would take quite a few years to really get into it - by then you will want to retire.

I know people who qualified when 60. I did it in my mid 40s. Go for it. Life experience counts so much in this job.

I retrained to be a teacher in my 50s. Love it.

Your age isn’t a barrier as long as you’re able to pass vetting and it can be a good job. As PP’s says your life experience is beneficial. However it’s also stressful, sickness levels and caseloads are high and burnout is common. Depending on the types of people on probation that you support there can be risks around aggression and violent behaviour so make sure you know the reality of what you could be faced with.
I do know some excellent PO’s who love their job but you can’t do this on your own, you have to work in partnership with other agencies. When you have success and divert people away from offending to a better life, it can be really rewarding. But it’s also hard work.
