AIBU to think wine glass charms should all be clearly different?

If you think wine glass charms are unbearably naff that's fine, and this is not the thread for you.

I like wine glass charms. I like them because they're useful and you know whose glass is whose. I also like them because I love tat and decoration and fiddly, pretty things.

Years ago a friend made me a beautiful set with silver and blue beads and each one had a main charm that represented something meaningful. There's a mermaid, a bicycle, a castle, a tortoise and various others. I love them and have used them for years. They're getting a bit tarnished and broken now and I'm thinking about getting a new set - but all the pre-made sets totally miss the point by having very similar charms. How is anyone supposed to remember they were the pale mauve starfish, not the deep violet starfish??! Or, are you the standing up cat, or the stretching its back cat? The arum lily or the calla lily?

I also have a glass Christmas set and they're good because there's an elf, a Santa, a candy cane, a Christmas tree etc. All different things. Easy to remember.

Aibu to think that the point of wine glass charms is to have a set of different things so you remember which one is yours??

YANBU. The whole idea is that they are visibly different.

BauhausOfEliott · 01/08/2026 09:51

Yes, the entire point is that they make your glass instantly recognisable.

Especially when it’s your fourth or fifth one…

maisybobbins · 01/08/2026 09:59

Definitely needs to be obvious! Otherwise is just a little pointless decoration.

Soontobe60 · 01/08/2026 10:06

What’s a wine glass charm? Can you post photos OP?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/08/2026 10:09

I love them especially when I'm hosting because I could lose and find 5 different wine glasses and spend the night asking people which is theirs and then wasting wine starting a new glass when i can't figure it out. Its not so much a problem in other houses, it's when I have to put the glass down to serve something or open a cupboard at someone's request. They absolutely need to be different, that is literally the point

SpiralSister · 01/08/2026 10:09

You are obviously right. I don’t use them but I do have an adorable set of Christmas cocktail stirrers, with tiny individual characters on each. Used once a year for the Christmas morning Buck’s Fizz. Would be pointless if all the same, as no argument could ensue over who gets Father Christmas this year!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/08/2026 10:10

@Soontobe60they are little things that go around the stem of your glas usually on a circle metal ring like a keyring. It's so people know which glass is theirs

Vitrolinsanity · 01/08/2026 10:20

I think they’re quite charming, especially Christmas ones. Yes, the point is they’re all different.

I don’t own any but if I entertained more often I’d be getting some! No need when it’s just me and DP :)

have you checked out Etsy? A few there that meet your criteria, which I totally agree with (YANBU), like these fruit ones

Justalondongirl · 01/08/2026 10:25

But yes the majority are different colour versions of the same thing which is pretty but useless!!

AnchorWHAT · 01/08/2026 10:43

So easy to make, order some charms and beads you like from somewhere cheap and have a go.

GhostOrchid · 01/08/2026 10:49

Oh, I thought they went in the wine! I guess that wouldn’t work for a full bodied red…

HoppingPavlova · 01/08/2026 10:56

They are a great idea but absolutely fucking useless in reality. I have tried them twice but people don’t seem to notice whatever their glass ‘is’ to begin with let alone after 3 drinks - and I’m talking things like palm tree versus bike, not things in shades of different colours. And these are people who don’t smash it down and get drunk. I just gave up on them frankly. Great concept but does not work, waste of money.

Rinceyourrice · 01/08/2026 11:05

That surprises me @HoppingPavlova . In my experience people notice them and remember that they're the palm tree, or the bicycle. We must have very different friends!

Yes I thought of that but I found it got a bit expensive. Perhaps I should save up.

Didn’t even know this was a thing. Though can’t say I or anyone else I know has ever really had an issue forgetting their glass. If you did or someone moved it you just get another one?

Rinceyourrice · 01/08/2026 11:09

The sets you posted are lovely, @Justalondongirl. Are they different enough though?!

Depends how many glasses everyone has had by the end of the evening I reckon!!!

Hotandpointy · 01/08/2026 11:25

I have different coloured wine glasses for company, very handy as long as you have no more than 8 people!

Rumpledandcrumpled · 01/08/2026 11:29

I regularly host up to 12 people and never had an issue of glasses getting mixed up,no matter how much is consumed. Is it a space thing, where all the glasses are crowded together or something?

On saying that they are cute and should be all different, but I find them pointless really.

ginasevern · 01/08/2026 11:44

I'd never heard of them before this thread but now I've been educated, I agree they should obviously all be different.

Bitzee · 01/08/2026 11:52

The whole point is that they’re visibly different. I like them for parties when people are standing around drinking and are more likely to put their glass down somewhere random and forget. Round the dinner table not really necessary although cute to do Christmas ones.
