To cancel a camping trip

BristolZoo · 30/07/2026 10:40

Yesterday afternoon my kids (9 and 11) accidentally ate some raw chicken.
It was from one of those breaded chicken packs, which they thought was pre-cooked, but wasnt.
Ive had a good Google and it says that they could be ill in around 2-3 days time.
We are supposed to be camping this weekend and the thought of camping with two kids with food poisoning is awful to say the least!

DH thinks im nuts because they seem fine today. But we'll lose the money of we dont cancel today.
I cant decide!

They only ate a mouthful so this is a huge massive overreaction

My son only ate one raw chicken goujon but still got E coli from it!

hopspot · 30/07/2026 16:36

Have you cut open another piece of the chicken to see what it looks like on the inside? It might be more cooked than you think

Dahliasrule · 30/07/2026 16:39

DH ate some cooked chicken from a well known supermarket ( I won’t mention the name but it wouldn’t reassure you to know it). He had food poisoning about three days later and ended up in hospital. He will never eat chicken cooked by anyone else now.

icouldholditwithacobweb · 30/07/2026 16:49

I once ate a whole pack of that breaded chicken that I assumed was pre-cooked but turned out to have cooking instructions on the back, and no notice saying it could be eaten hot or cold. I was fine.

Tableforjoan · 30/07/2026 16:53

You can get food poisoning from fully cooked chicken as well though.

You’re just on edge now because you believe this to not be fully cooked.

MrsVBS · 30/07/2026 16:57

I think if you get ill from chicken it’s a lot quicker than 2 or 3 days. I’d risk the camping trip!

Seahorse8888 · 30/07/2026 18:07

I feel ill reading this and in the do not go on holiday.

I was so ill with campylobacter when I was a child from eating raw chicken. It took about 5 days from eating for me to get seriously ill and put in hospital!

But thats my and my experience and as others have said, if that chicken didn't have the campylobacter virus in it then they will be fine, but as someone who has had it, I wouldn't risk it!

Dogmum6 · 30/07/2026 18:16

Also assume it was chilled ? So less risk of
bacteria

I read online that food poisoning from chicken takes a few days to show itself.
Imagine being in a tent, in a field, with few toilets or showers and two kids who are shitting themselves and being sick!

I cant think of much worse.

If DH thinks it’s ok - perhaps let him take the children camping and you book a nice spa day in 🤣

BristolZoo · 30/07/2026 22:44

God, im nervous now! Kids seem fine this eve and its been over 24 hours. But the stories of being ill 2-3 days later are worrying.
I think ill just see how they are in the morning and go from there.
Its definitely raw in the middle - the chicken is white on the outside and they have obviously cooked it a bit where the breadcrumbs are, but the middle is raw.
Feeling a bit sick just thinking of it!

An acquaintance got campylobacter from a small piece of raw chicken. The symptoms took 48 hours to appear and she was extremely unwell.

garlictwist · 30/07/2026 22:57

I had food poisoning from chicken as a child in Corfu. It tasted really weird and I was very ill a few hours later. So if they are fine now I think you’ll be fine.

NotMeNoNo · 30/07/2026 23:03

I would go but have an exit plan including clean up kit, towels, bucket etc so if it does show up you can get home safely. Can you go in 2 vehicles?

BristolZoo · 30/07/2026 10:55

Thanks. I dont think they ate much, just a mouthful or so before I stopped them.
Its covered in breadcrumbs so hopefully M&S have done something to it like cooked it a bit before packaging 😬.
We are supposed to be leaving tomorrow afternoon so I guess ill just have to wait and see!!

If it helps ease your mind @BristolZoo i watched a documentary once about people who follow a completely raw diet including meats and I was horrified that it included raw chicken!
You will know usually within 12 hours if they’re going to get food poisoning (sometimes quicker than that) and if they didn’t eat too much they’ll probably be fine x

But maybe immodium might delay the inevitable until we got home, if we needed to?

Has anyone used charcoal tablets to help with food poisoning? A friend has recommended them as a standby.

raw chicken does not automatically mean food poisoning, it means a small risk.
but I would do anything to avoid camping so would be dramatising much more than you 😂
holidays are meant to be better than home

My then baby son got it from prey my cat brought in, there was a tiny trace left on the wooden floor he crawled on.
he was really ill, thankfully recovered, we can’t avoid all risks

menopausequeen · 31/07/2026 03:04

I don’t think it matters that they only took a bite as food poisoning depends on the bacteria being present not how much you eat. And it can take days to show up.
However that said why cancel when it’s likely they will be absolutely fine?
They might get ill once you return home, they might get ill on the trip in which case you can just leave , or they might not get ill at all (most likely).

Do you have severe health anxiety as I have never heard anyone be this paranoid over people who are not sick

Thegoldenoriole · 31/07/2026 06:39

It wouldn’t even occur to me to cancel tbh. Do you have anxiety? I have a dear friend who would respond much like you and she is constantly anxious about all kinds of things.

There is no proven effect from over the counter doses.

Medical settings use a very high concentration when they use it and that’s not for food poisoning.

You’d be better off if they come down with it to just let it play out and get it out. Trying to hold it in will just make the after effects worse and the cramps horrible.

Huh? Imodium is 2mg of loperamide - which is the exact same drug and dosage as prescription loperamide per tablet. My partner gets it prescribed by the bucket load. One or two tablets is enough to dry me up for 3 days 😂

I can assure you they work the same way, though under drs orders and for specific medical conditions they may suggest taking more tablets than would be suggested on a pack of loperamide for a person taking it for a bout of diarrhoea.

I was referring to over the counter charcoal.

Amber2019 · 01/08/2026 19:59

Im sure they will be absolutely fine. I used to eat raw bacon straight from the fridge as a kid, much to my parents horror. I loved it. Was never ill. Couldn't imagine doing that now.
