i went into tesco at lunchtime, picked up three items all pretty small (jar of pasta sauce, loaf of bread and packet of oreo's). went to the nearest checkout and was stuck with the slowest customer in the world infront of me, finally she packed her bags and paid so i moved forward and started to get my bag open to put my shopping in.

as i turned round after flapping my bag around i seen the cashier running through a item belonging to the lady behind me in the que.

i said er i am sure that i am the next customer and the cashier replied that as the lady only had one item she had put hers through first then asked if it was ok. i replied that as she had already scanned the item that there was not much i could do about it but it would have been polite for her to ask me first.

the cashier and lady both looked at me like i had ten heads then i had to wait till she rummaged around in her purse looking for all her change while i am stood like a prat holding onto my bag.

fair enough if i had a trolley full of shopping but really how much more time does it take to scan 3 items rather than one.

the lady finally found the right of money thn said sorry to the cashier for getting her into trouble and edged past me looking like i was some kind of loony who might pounce on her.

so was i bu, or would you be about this.

I dont understand people that wait AGES in the queue and THEN finally decide to get their purse/bag whatever out once they are packed/waiting to pack.

If you had your bag out ready she wouldnt have done it.

Having said that YANBU I would have been furious.

kerryk · 26/06/2008 17:04

my bag was ready, it was just a bit crumpled so i did that thing where you flap it in the air to get some air into it iykwim.

chequers we had the same thing at disney paris last year, waiting inline to meet mm and someone pushed to the front of the queue, i shouted that they must be the lowest of the low pushing in front of children at disneyland while waiting to see mm and i was told to shut the fuck up before i got my teeth knocked in no-one else in the queue batted an eyelid.

I am always letting people in front of me if they only have a few items but would be mightly pissed off if the cashier made that decision on my behalf.

You should emptied the pasta sauce on her bloody head.

littlepig · 26/06/2008 17:15

Wouldn't like to be in the queue behind you Umlella if you like to slow stuff down

I do try to be fairly chilled although not always successfuuly; people who act like having to pay for it is a surprise outcome do drive me nuts. Ditto for having to pack the stuff into bags and take it away - I'm always amazed how long that can take!

This question does make me smile though - my dad would have made her cancel that sale and put his stuff through first and then he'd have gone to complain. Waiting, er, doesn't come naturally to my dad!!

Did you have you dc with you? Is it just me, or do people assume you've got all the time in the world if you've got a baby with you?

mixedmama · 26/06/2008 17:18

Well I think YANBU. I would be a bit annoyed and would have said something too. Not sure I would have gone to the manager, unless I felt the cashier was being dismissive or rude afterwards.

They shoudl def of asked you and you are right about the 1 product vs 3 thing hardly liek she would have to wait long.

queen2shoes · 26/06/2008 17:25

yanbu
what a rude pair

Roskva · 26/06/2008 17:43

It was probably the same lady who scooted in front of me the other day with a trolley full when I had a basket with a few items perched on top of the buggy which contained a grouchy dd who was doing her best to escape

cocolepew · 26/06/2008 17:49

It's not trivial, it's not up to the checkout person to pick who goes through the till in what order. I would have caused a row

Umlellala · 26/06/2008 18:14

Oh noooooo, I am not one of those who when am about to pay suddenly look stricken and go 'oh now where's my cards..?'. I am quite efficient

I just know that if I let stuff like this bother me, I would be perpetually in a RAGE! So instead, I chat to my dd and try not to think about the fact that we have been standing in the same queue for 28 minutes while people have entered the shop and left with their monthly shopping .

It would have bugged me too. I quite often have only a couple of items and queue behind people with a trolley full of stuff and most of the time they say something like 'Is that all you have, you go first' which is lovely of them, but I would never even ASK to go in front, let alone just push in front of them.

kerryk · 26/06/2008 18:50

i did have my dd with me, she is 4 though.

I'm with you - that sort of thing pisses me off too.

Just as well there wasn't any illicit grape-eating involved too

YANBU

BexieID · 26/06/2008 19:03

YANBU

I work in Tesco, and after 8pm the tobacco kiosk gets shut, so customers have to buy their cigarettes at the checkouts. If someone has asked for them and is waiting for someone to get them, and theres another customer with a few things, I always ask the customer waiting if they mind if I serve the next one.

No one minds, although a couple of older men have looked a bit put out. I wouldn't ask if the next customer had a mahoosive basket or trolley load. I would never do what your cashier did today either.

I've had people that have paid for their shopping only to remember they have forgotten something and go back for it expecting to be served straight away (although most people 'forget' things as soon as I start putting their stuff through).

In Aldi the checkout operator sometimes calls you to the front of the queue if you only have one or two items and the person in front is still unloading.

BexieID · 26/06/2008 20:34

Most people do ask if they can go back for something, even at the point of paying. Some people just diappear for ages and you have an invisble shopper for a bit, lol.

The cashier was being an officious smug twat and YANBU at all. I bet the other customer was a mate of hers or her mum or something. And I would have said something nasty.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 26/06/2008 20:55

YANBU, this buge me too. Twice in 1 week I had a similar thing happen but it was the customer. First time was Sunday morning, queue in my local somerfield woman marches in the door grabs a paper stands in front of me and the person already in front of me sees my face and looks at me and says I am going to be late for church i'm sure you don't mind. Told her I didn't because obviousy her time was far more important than mine, she wasn't sure if I was being nice or sarcastic.

Second time I was on my way to an appointment stopped in at WH Smith for a bottle of water just went to step forward on my turn and a woman came rushing by me slammed her stuff down looked round and said oh I am in a hurry!!!! no do you mind or anything so I told her that so was I had an appointment so I would appreciate taking the turn I had actually queued for.

I am terrible though I am generally very polit and try to be helpful and accomodating if I can but if people are rude I am equally as rude like today someone pushed dd (4) literally pushed her out the road to grab their friend waiting at the crossing lights so I did say something then too, dd just about ended up in the road and seperated from me and my sister.

BexieID · 26/06/2008 21:39

I always wonder about church goers who go shopping on a sunday, lol. It used to be frowned upon to work, so I guess shopping is allowed.
