OK. What are your eco sins?
I’ll start

I use way too much cling film and kitchen roll. In my defence, your honour, I rarely fly and I drive a hybrid 😀
Oh and I grow my own veggies

Those who don't fly - is that for environmental reasons or because you can't or don't want to?

I drive everywhere in my petrol car (live in a rural area)
Fly on holiday three times a year.
Heat the house to tropical
Buy a lot of cheap clothes

I grow my own fruit and veg
Won't buy imported meat
Won't buy air freighted veg
The only imported food I buy is stuff we can't produce like oranges. So if it's not in season I don't buy it.
I recycle everything possible. Some in my compost bin, some in council bins, some I take to tip or charity shop.
I buy some second hand clothes
Never use a tumble dryer
Have solar panels and batteries so use very little from the grid in summer.

Newsenmum · 27/07/2026 12:03

Well Ive procreated (shock horror)
Have two cars (hybrids if that helps)
Use coffee pods a lot
Use the dryer a lot
Use takeawy coffee cups
Have a year round berry habit

Plus points:
Havent flown in years
Dont eat meat
Grow lots of fruit and veggies, try to eat seasonably apart from our berry habit (at least the ones in summer are from our own garden!)
Recycle everything we can - yes I sit and wash up containers
Secondhand for pretty much all toys and clothes.

We just all need to do our best. No smarminess.

LittleSoo · 27/07/2026 12:28

I could get an EV on salary sacrifice via work and also charge it at work for free... I refuse as I love my petrol car too much and I ain't waiting ages at services on long journeys to charge my car.

shaleand · 27/07/2026 12:29

Fly multiple times a year
Air con in my house
Dont recycle meat packaging cos there’s no way I’m scrubbing a manky chicken packet
Tumble dry towels in summer
Water my garden

On the plus side:
Use reusable whenever possible, including nappies and wipes
House has solar panels and batteries
Electric car

@GooselingCan I ask what sort of clothes Shein are really good for ? I'm trying to reduce my spend on clothes which is sort of working out as I don't really get out a lot socially at the moment but curious about Shein stuff- is it all extremely trendy? I imagine a lot of it is polyester and nylon, so does it hold up ok in the wash ? Hate buying stuff that shrinks after one wash..Cheers

theruffles · 27/07/2026 13:58

I use the dryer (and have no shame about it)
I don't compost food waste (mostly because I absolutely don't want to clean out the food waste bin supplied by the council)
I don't always remember to bring my own travel mug for coffee
I don't skimp on the heating in the winter
I've organised birthday parties and put plastic tat in the party bags

Pros:
I haven't flown in years
I do recycle most things
I pretty much always buy second hand clothes or buy from charity shops
I've never brought from a site like Shein/Temu/Ali Express
I drive a hybrid
I will hang washing out to dry as much as possible when it's warm/windy
I take public transport to work (but I would prefer to drive)
I reuse a lot of things where we can and try to avoid food waste
I pass clothes on to other parents that my DC have outgrown, and accept clothes in return

Mokel · 27/07/2026 18:22

I don’t wash n recycle meat packaging. It’s in the same way as why people should not wash raw meat. You are not killing any bacteria by washing it and the bacteria can spread in the droplets.

My DM got food poisoning from my DGM washing a chicken and splashes everywhere including the j cloth

Totally irresponsible not to recycle. Imagine if everyone did that.

I pay eye watering amounts of income tax so more than pay my way funding some pointless net zero project to compensate.

I like their basics mostly. Lots of cotton-y T shirts (but think they’re blended with elastane and polyester mostly), wide leg floaty trousers, hoodies and loungewear in the winter, sports bras for the gym. I’ve had a couple of leggings for the gym but they ripped at the crotch so not squat proof 🤣

Most things have been absolutely fine in the wash and I’ve found the quality is no different to Primark, H&M and other high street stores. Nothing has shrank so far, touch wood!

The app can be a bit confusing to navigate and they sell a hell of a lot of random stuff but I’ve got nothing but good things to say. Apart from the leggings!

You don't need a hosepipe for a plastic lawn.

Pretty sure other people use their hosepipe for different things, like filling paddling pools.

This thread is depressing.

It's not about the money

ktopfwcv · 28/07/2026 09:19

Only using wipes, no toilet paper.

FedUpCelery · 28/07/2026 09:35

We were given food caddies for waste food to go in. I can't bring myself to use them and they have been repurposed as storage.

Only using wipes, no toilet paper.

As long as you don't flush them.

IWillDoBetter · 28/07/2026 11:00

Have a big gas guzzling car. Really don’t want an electric car.
Have several foreign holidays per year.
Buy clothes I don’t need, although I am getting better.
Have air conditioning
Have a wood burner

On the plus side…
I have solar panels and a big battery
Have hardly any food waste and cook from scratch
Walk a lot - hardly use the gas guzzling car.
Recycle a lot
Never use the dryer and only put the dishwasher on when it’s full.
Grow lots of fruit. Have lots of water butts.
Buy veg in season and try to buy locally reared meat (expensive!)
Use old fashioned cleaning products and keep chemicals to a minimum.
Have stopped buying cutesy home stuff from homesense, dunhelm, etc
Have a woodburner 😀

HandPulledNoodles · 28/07/2026 12:02

Several Holiday flights a year
lots of one-use plastics
Rarely recycle unless its really easy to do
Use delivery services even when it's likely not necessary

To offset
I don't have kids
I don't drive - public transport everywhere
I avoid buying unnecessary clothes if I buy, i go for quality and wear it to death

I don’t fly because of the environment and I accept the limitations. It would be rank rank hypocrisy if I flew because the environment has always been a concern of mine and I’m quite vocal about this. I have flown, but not for a quarter of a century and I won’t fly again.

Mokel · 28/07/2026 13:14

One thing I don’t do is have cushions, bedding, placemats, mugs etc which I change seasonally. Such as pumpkin shaped mugs, cushions with autumn vibes on them etc. Each year, there is more of this crap in shops such as The Range, B&M.

I use the same mugs all year round.

Anyone who buys cushions for a few weeks then sling them out are simply idiots
