Neighbour and his england flag!

incrediblyincredible · Today 10:30

Our NDN are both 80, and we don’t have the best relationship with them, we feel they can be a bit inconsiderate in terms of boundary noise. We’ve had to mention a couple of things which have affected the enjoyment of our home. So we don’t really speak anymore and they have clearly taken offence despite us mentioning things in a polite way.

Anyway, the man has put up a large England flag on a pole on the joining fence. It’s right at the front of the house and the pole isn’t particularly high so the flag flaps in our faces or visitors faces when they open our gate to go down our walkway. This morning I got pissed off with it as the wind is always blowing our way so the flag is always over our boundary and it looks like it’s our flag as a result (just to add I love football and have no issues with the flag itself, just the positioning of it).
So this morning I wrapped it round the pole and opened my gate to make a point that it’s a walkway.
Anyway, I was sat in my living room and I heard the man come out and say “someone’s wrapped that up!” In an angry loud voice.
AIBU to think that he should realise it’s a bit inconsiderate and could put the flag in an area that doesn’t hang over our boundary?

Id ask nicely first, given history if they don't respond well and can't see the inconvenience I would have to retaliate and do something as equally inconvenient to them like puting a sprinkler on your side of the boundary facing theirs so when they go in and out they get wet 😂 tell them sorry you thought it was fine as it's not affecting you.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · Today 13:26

@Faceonthewrongfoot that is why I ask. I think cutting down a neighbours flag, if they are of a different Nationality would be perceived as racism by many here.

I think "AIBU to think my neighbour is a racist, they cut down my Mexican/Pakistan/Iranian/Palastine/German flag?" would get a strong pro OP response on here.

I am working class Northerner thou so almost certainly wrong on this, as on all things to do with myself and my experience of the world 😂😂😂

It sounds like quite a big problem. You are in a microclimate where there is wind at face level during this heat wave. Where exactly are you? Troll-land?

Strangely enough there's a wind here in Hertfordshire despite the sun blazing down! They can and do co-exist. Before you accuse posters of being trolls maybe you should learn a little bit about basic weather.

Bogofftosomewherehot · Today 13:30

Do you live in a wind tunnel?
Can't imagine there being enough wind for it to continuously smack your visitors in the face when at head height. 😂
It'll all be over either tonight or on Sunday. Just suck it up for a couple of days in the name of patriotism. Unless you're just miserable and not patriotic?

SmudgeButt · Today 13:30

Well if it was a tree with branches overhanging on to your property you would have the right to cut anything that goes from the border on to your side. I'd be considering that. But I suppose it would be best to ask the neighbour to move it.

Frankly most the houses I've seen with St George cross flags appear to be inhabited by the far right. And I wouldn't want anyone to think that was me. So I might find another flag that I could fly instead and act surprised when the neighbour asks where his went.

"Oh! It was just gone!! I guess it flew off in that high wind last night!!! And since it was gone I thought flying the Welsh/Iranian/Argentinian/Pride flag would be a delightful change!!!"

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · Today 13:33

@SmudgeButt how do you know how these people vote?
My son lives in Tower Hamlets and there are loads of flags out, are they all "far right"

Genuine question - if they were immigrants and put a flag up, say a Mexican flag - would you 'cut it down'? @FrenchandSaunders

Are you suggesting Mexican flags are less flappy in the wind?

Yes, it’s a terrible thing to mention this might be a troll thread, I should research weather. Great plan.

Have you seen 10 Downing Street is festooned with England flags today?

canklesmctacotits · Today 13:42

Put up an Argentina flag in front of his 😉

Yawn 🙄 We need to move away from this very lazy stereotype.

Lots of houses and businesses near me have England flags flying. Supporting your national football team doesn’t automatically make you far right.

We’ve had England bunting up throughout the tournament and our flag goes up on match days.

Ffs

It’s really windy here. Southern England.

YourBrightDog · Today 13:53

It really is worrying that people seem to persist in lazy trope of England flag = racist. The womens football team winning the Euros and now the men's team doing better than expected in the World Cup is something to celebrate. Also if OPs neighbour is in his 80s it means ge would have been in his 20s in 1966 prime age to remember the last time England won. Frankly I think this week is not the week to make an issue of it. Tieing up the flag was a bit OTT and J am pleased to see in her last post that the OP seems to be regretting doing so, or at least making it so obvious that she or someone from her family did it.

Yes it’s people celebrating the football teams.

TalkToTheHand123 · Today 13:57

I'd keep wrapping it up.

Nighttimenoise · Today 14:05

Are people really not able to just either duck or avoid the flag , it's one flag not a whole avenue of them..

AgentPidge · Today 14:06

It's not really the flying of the flag though, is it? If we agree it's fine to fly it for a few days in support of our national team? No, the problem is the same as if you were sitting next to him on a train and he spread his knees right out over your space. It's manspreading. ( I know they're a couple but I'd bet there'd be no flag if he wasn't around. )
I had similar with twit neighbour who stuck a Halloween pumpkin on the fence between our gardens. It was in our way as we went up the path and it stayed there until it rotted and I pushed it off into their garden. It could've gone on the other side (semi-detached). We didn't challenge him bc knew he'd love to think it was winding us up. I'd probably ignore it, OP.

HolidayHappy123 · Today 14:09

Put a small piece of fence on your side of the boundary so it can’t fly over.

AnonyMumAuDHD · Today 14:11

Can you not simply pop a note through or knock on the door and say: ‘Love the flag - Bellingham is doing well, isn’t he? However, I wondered whether you could move the flag so that it does’t overhand our boundary? I know the footie’s nearly over, but it’s causing us a few problems and so we wondered if it could be shifted along a bit?’

Fluffyholeysocks · Today 14:12

HolidayHappy123 · Today 14:09

Yes. Go to the lengths of buying and cutting up a fence panel so you can erect a small piece of fence on your boundary to stop a flag flapping in your face when it's windy. But if we lose it may be down in the morning anyway..

HotinJapantonight · Today 14:14

Can see why you did it but it's pretty passive aggressive really.

As much as it would irritate me, which it would monumentally, I'd have just let it go. It won't be for much longer in the great scheme of things.

I completely agree.
Our England bunting and flag goes up for both the men’s and women’s tournaments. We’re not racist/right wing.

We’re just normal family enjoying supporting our national team. We also put up a pride flag during our local pride weekend 🤷‍♀️

It’s been really windy here in the NW the last few days. It’s partly why two local wildfires have spread so quickly.

I'm a street artist and this thread had inspired me. I'm thinking London, depicting the figure stepping off the plinth. Watch this space.

Of course she means the St George cross, which is the flag of England. What else do you think she means by 'England flag'? A picture of Mr Blobby and a Gregg's?

OP, absolutely YANBU. If it's hanging over your property, they're dickheads.

😂😂😂😂
