I live in a shared house which is owner-occupied. The rent is affordable, the location is perfect for me (close to family and my boyfriend), and overall it has been a good living situation.

I pay my rent, but I spend most nights at my boyfriend’s. I probably sleep at the house once a month. I mainly use the house for working from home, meal prepping, showering, and having my own space when needed. My boyfriend and I have been together less than a year, and although we spend a lot of time together, I don’t feel ready to move in with him yet. I like having my own independence and somewhere that is mine.

The owner of the house is genuinely lovely, hardworking, polite and respectful. The other male housemate is also great. They both work away, so most of the time it is just myself and the owner’s girlfriend in the house (we are both in our mid twenties).

She is a student nurse, very active, plays lots of sport, and we don’t overlap a huge amount. I always thought she was lovely and we got along well. I have listened to her talk about her relationship, difficult weeks, grief, family issues etc, and I’ve always tried to be supportive.

Recently she had a difficult week because she missed her boyfriend, so I suggested we go for a walk together at the weekend to keep her occupied. During the walk, I briefly mentioned that my boyfriend and I had our first proper argument on Friday. It was a significant thing for me because it was our first big disagreement, but I don’t feel I was ranting or constantly complaining. The conversation probably lasted 15-20 minutes of a two-hour+ walk, and then we moved on. She asked questions and gave good advice, which I appreciated.

Today she was using the office to do a call as part of a fitness challenge she is partaking in, which I normally use when working from
home. I had no issue with this at all, it’s her partner’s house, and I completely understand she would have priority. On her way out, she said the office was free and I was welcome to use it. She still had some stuff on the desk, including an OPEN notepad which had my name written in it twice (I assume this was accidental and used during the call). I know I shouldn’t have looked at the pages and just closed it, but curiosity got the better of me when I seen my name!

What I saw has honestly upset me. One entry was about where she feels she lowers her standards to avoid making other people uncomfortable. She wrote that she thinks she does this with me, that she struggles to redirect me respectfully, and that she feels she has a superiority complex towards me (and another friend).

Another entry was about where she complains about other people’s behaviour but still rewards them with her time, and she mentioned me talking about my partner.

I was really surprised and hurt by this. This was the first time I had ever opened up to her about anything negative regarding my relationship. When I mention my boyfriend, it is usually positive things.

What upset me most was the comment about feeling superior. I feel like I have always been kind to her. I listen to her problems, reassure her, celebrate her wins, and support her. For her birthday, she told us we were celebrating it and she wanted a cake, so I went out of my way to buy her a gift and organise a cake.

I know she is allowed to have private thoughts and I also know I shouldn’t have read something that wasn’t meant for me. I’m not planning on confronting her, especially because her boyfriend owns the house and I don’t want to create awkwardness.

However, I do feel hurt and I’m now questioning whether I should keep engaging as much as I have. Part of me feels like the one time I went out of my way to spend time with her and support her, I ended up being discussed negatively afterwards.

Now you know the mindset she has, you can adjust accordingly. She's not a friend. If you want to carry on living there you can, just keep a distance. If this makes you want to move, that's understandable.

I think it's understandable you're upset, you thought you got on ok, now you realise you don't.

Fluffybuns88 · 13/07/2026 10:53

It sucks that your feelings are hurt and that you saw that, but I wouldn't take it to heart, you have no idea whether she genuinely feels this way towards you or if it's her way of processing emotions she is uncomfortable with.

I was encouraged by my therapist years ago to write similar thoughts down so we could discuss and work through them in our next session.

Daisydoesnt · 13/07/2026 10:53

Blimey what a bitch! I’d be superficially cordial as you have to being in such close proximity, but I’d certainly not consider her a friend or engage.

Francestein · 13/07/2026 10:54

It sounds like she might be processing her thoughts to a counsellor and you need to fold her note up in with her things and pop them aside, and pretend you never saw it. It sounds to me like she might have MH issues that affect her connections/social life. This is no reflection on you, but don’t trust her and don’t share. I suspect anything you say could be weaponised later. Keep yourself to yourself. She can’t be trusted with your feelings/inner world

teaorcoffeevicar · 13/07/2026 10:54

You basically read her diary and then got upset about what was in it.

Look, I have people pleasing tendencies, I have been working this for a while and talking to ChatGPT about a lot of my feelings towards conversations/interactions I have had with people and yes, some of it involves irritation on my part that is 100% not the other person's fault, its to do with me and the patterns of behaviours I exhibit and I am working on changing them.

If you read parts of my discussion you would think I was an utter bitch but I am not- I am merely getting out anger and resentment that I have never expressed to anyone and that has been building for years due to my own suppression and inability to talk to others about my feelings due to fear of confrontation. This is all on me and is no reflection on anyone else.

I would be devastated if someone read those thoughts and then formed a negative opinion of me as a result. We ALL have shadow thoughts and we all have a right to privacy and to not be misunderstood.

If you want to step back from her as a result thats entirely your choice but I am simply offering another perspective that this may be how she processes her thoughts

Bonkers1966 · 13/07/2026 10:59

It was therapy style notes. Bit upsetting but don't take it to heart. Now you know where you stand with her. You are not friends. You are civil acquaintances That's fine. No more walks or cosy chats. Move on.

Only for I stay at my boyfriends every night, I would consider moving. Though, I definitely wouldn’t find cheaper rent or a more convenient location for my needs currently.

Seconding - she's been to therapy and is trying to link up her "faults" like the superiority complex with examples. I'd drop the friendliness myself and go back to cordially polite, but also not take it particularly personally. I'm not sure I could bring myself to mention it unless I was definitely moving out!

Ah I feel bitch is quite harsh, but I’ve definitely never read about someone I thought I was friends with feeling more superior than me. I’ve never once thought I was better than anyone else so it’s a completely wild thought or opinion to have.

You read her private, personal reflections and didn't like it. That's the cost of prying into this GS that are none of your business.

You didn't just look at the bit with your name, either, because you mentioned "another entry".

That's a hugely disrespectful thing to do.

You knew it was personal notes and yet you chose to read them. That's incredibly disrespectful and unkind. The fact your feelings were hurt because of this is completely on you.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 13/07/2026 11:23

She has a lot of issues OP, they are her issues not yours. I understand you are really upset I would be too. But she is talking about her superiority complex and trying to overcome it so it's obviously not about you, I suspect she was using an example. I'm glad she is getting therapy because she sounds rather awful, maybe there is some hope for her. Poor BF though, imagine what he has to put up with.

KamikazePigeon · 13/07/2026 11:24

I sometimes journal in the mornings, which is just 3 pages of writing whatever comes into my head. It's a way of clearing out all the mental rubbish so that I can focus better on my day's work. I'd hate for anyone to read it, because I vent a lot and probably sound very negative and bitchy at times. It's one-sided and doesn't truly reflect the entirety of whatever situation is facing me.

So who knows if she really meant what she wrote or not. You can't ask her, obviously! Since you don't see her much anyway, I'd just try to put it out of my head and let her take the lead in whatever interactions you have after this.

SallyD00lally · 13/07/2026 11:30

It probably wasn't a fitness challenge.

It sounds like it was a therapy session and those were her notes from it.

Laiste · 13/07/2026 11:32

If i wrote down how exactly i feel sometimes about a lot of people in my life and they saw it they'd be horrified.

I imagine it would work the other way too.

We can't read minds and this is why it's a good thing. You weren't meant to see it, but you did and you can't un see it. Just take a step back now and don't take it to heart.

But totally understandable. I'm with OP!

Can you put your hand on your heart and say that, if you saw an open document with your name appearing more than once, you'd just walk away?

She didn't pry - she didn't open the notebook - it was staring her in the face.

Can you put your hand on heart and say you have never had an uncharitable, or irritable thought about someone in your life?

The only difference here is that it was written down on paper. As a PP said, if we were all telepathic noone would ever remain friends with anyone!

Fiendishandfiery · 13/07/2026 11:41

I think those notes are about her not you, she wrote she feels she’s a superiority complex with you, not she feels she’s superior and right to do so.

a superiority complex is when someone exaggerates and boasts but it often hides an inferiority complex.

the redirection, possibly going on for about 20 mins about your argument felt too much for her and she wanted you to stop, but didn’t know how to do that, so she just continued,

this reads to me like someone examining her own behaviours and rather than being about your behaviour. I understand why it’s hurtful but reading her diary as much as I get the temptation, was not ok.

Another saint!

Bless you.

There's a large gap between being a saint and not being nosy.

You can't complain if you read someone's personal thoughts and it makes your feelings sad.

Most people would have moved the notebook or closed it.

Catsfredwilma · 13/07/2026 11:42

It says a lot about her and nothing about you. I would be civil and polite but not share anything with her, or put yourself out in any way.
It’s understandable that it’s upsetting and a shock but I would try not to give it much
more thought time.

Sherararara · 13/07/2026 11:44

She wrote all this down about you on a note pad which she then forgot to take with her after inviting you to use the office…
To say this is all a bit far fetched is an understatement to say the least.

hididdlyho · 13/07/2026 11:58

I can see why you'd feel upset, I'm sure I would feel the same in your shoes. I would probably keep my distance a little but remain cordial. I would see it as she's trying to work on a flaw in her character, rather than her disliking you. I grew up with a mother who very frequently and quite vocally looked down her nose at other people. I've learnt that way of thinking almost as a default and I honestly hate it. I don't actually think that I'm better than other people and I've had to retrain my brain to not think this way. I think for her it was a defensive mechanism as she has low self esteem.

The flip side of that is there was a period where I was very much a people pleaser in a bad way. I was overcompensating in case I was coming over as being snobby and I didn't have very good boundaries with people. It took me many years to start to learn to interact with people in a way which lines up with how I actually think rather than learned thought processes. I wonder if this could be a similar scenario.
