When would be a nicer time to visit for a week with an 8 year old-end September or start-middle October?
Would there be much to do and what is the weather generally like around that time?

Grateful for any feedback

Your guess is as good as mine if you want weather predictions! In general, most attractions will be open most of the time until the end of October half-term.

Do you live there? I know it’s so hard to predict weather but was wondering if there was some kind of pattern-like end of September sunny, fairly warm etc
Also, when are there signs of autumn?

I live in Cornwall, but close to Devon and Dartmoor. September can be wonderful, but DH tells me there was a long range forecast that this would be a long hot summer. Last August was cool and damp; September was better.

Living in the SW, our weather comes mainly off the Atlantic and we sometimes get storms that are the remnants of hurricanes from the Caribbean. It can change fast, several times a day. Autumn starts properly from mid-October but the trees are already looking dry this year. Sorry to be vague.

GreenFootstool · 11/07/2026 14:38

End Sept would be better is my guess but frankly it could be wet and windy or scorching!

@Papyrophile is right to point out the links between our weather and the Atlantic hurricane season - it's never been clearer than the last few years, and we've had some big storms.

We do have a higher average rainfall in October than September but that's about all you can stipulate. We aren't a monsoon driven country where the difference between a fortnight is predictable!

GreenFootstool · 11/07/2026 14:42

And for autumnal signs, mid October but the countryside is already looking burnt at the moment and will only get more dried out so that will affect how early the trees drop their leaves this year.

End of September. It’s my favourite time of year down of here or one of them. It can still be warm enough to not be bundled up. And to have a decent time on the beach. No guarantee that a storm won’t roll in but it is a nice time of year

Our dates are either 24th September for 6 days or 1st October for 6 days.
I don’t need beach weather etc, happy to layer up, would love no rain and a bit of sun ideally

They are really both the same. It’s a bit of a toss up depending on the weather. It could be warm to mild or windy and pissing it down at those times. Really impossible to say. If you want good weather you could always wait and book last minute if you aren’t too fussy about location. You will find something even a week before.

There will be all the same things there always are in season for the most part, but you’ll avoid the crowds. I barely leave the house between now and September. 😂

Well, depending on what you want to do during the trip / where in Cornwall you'll be, the Minack Theatre (one of my most beloved places in the world!) still has shows on until the end of September but not into October if that is something you might like? It's a very special place.

We are British but live abroad and our Dc hasn’t been to the uk yet, we are looking for very typically British/English things to do…fish n chips on the beach, rock pools, arcades 😂We’re going to Newquay but will visit Mousehill, the place where the chef has a restaurant (forgot the name!) and have scones & jam
I’d also like to take Dc on a Gruffalo hunt, do you know if they have any around that time?
Oh and talk of a lavender farm? Just really lovely, traditional things x

Mousehole is pretty, but there isn't much to do as it's only a small harbour.

Penzance has a couple of companies who do brilliant coastal boat tours - Mermaid or Marine Discovery would be my choices.

Lavender farms, I think the season ends in August? They don't flower all year round and harvest in August normally, but I wonder if it'll be earlier with the heat this summer.
