Would you complain about this?

I am not usually someone to complain about anything and I am all for people enjoying themselves, but the people over the back of us play very loud music most nights and as I am at home with a baby I can hear their music during the day too, not a problem for me as I don’t mind a bit of music.
However Thursday night the music was particularly louder than usual and it was clear from the noise their was a party going on, again no problem with people having fun but this was a school night and my school child is in the back bedroom with the window open and complained several times about not being able to sleep because of the music so I called over the fence asking them to turn it down as the children had school in the morning and they laughed and turned it up.
My husband walked over to see if they would turn it down but on his way an elderly neighbour of theirs warned him not to saying they are not very nice people and when another neighbour once complained about their music, they threatened to stab him, so my husband came back.
This particular neighbour came to our door the next day and said they had made multiple complaints to their housing association and gave us the details if we should want to make a complaint.
Eventually the music stopped at 11:30 and all had gone quiet by midnight.
If this had been a weekend I probably would’ve just quietly seethed but my child had very little sleep and I do think being a school night makes all the difference.

Normally I would say something to the family and hope that would be enough but apparently it’s the women that’s aggressive and it’s a multigenerational household so I wouldn’t like to go round if they’re unfriendly and there are language barriers which would make it difficult.

I could make a complaint to their housing association but as I asked them to turn their music down I think they will know that it was me and I’m not sure I want to bring trouble to the door especially with a baby and a primary school child.
They are using some sort of boombox or amp speaker because it is incredibly loud.
Their neighbours have said keep away as they do a lot of drugs and are dealers of course I have absolutely no evidence of this but it’s clear they have upset a lot of neighbours without a care and have no intention of considering how it affects them.

Would you

A- contact the housing association and make a complaint and hope they don’t know it was me.

B- Go round and try and reason with them with the hope they are not as bad as the neighbours say.

C- Just put up and shut up as the safest option.

Don't approach yourself but do complain via the proper channels.

Yes do this, definitely complain though they sound an absolute nuisance.

If I do I hope enough people have already complained that they don’t know who made the call.
I will probably have to find some evidence as it didn’t occur to me to record the noise so maybe I might have to record it next time and let this time go, although their neighbour has recorded it so hopefully his evidence will back up my claims.
The man next to him who was threatened doesn’t want to get involved.

A.

It’s a shame because it was a really quiet area where everyone keeps themselves to themselves, it’s not actually our street so I don’t know who lives there.

Option A. Ick

If the music doesn't normally bother you and it was just one night because they where having a party I'd leave it

Yeah as I didn’t record it I might have to leave it as others complaints have got nowhere.
It is all the time but only bothers me now because it’s a heat wave here I need the windows open in the bedrooms and the child in the back can’t sleep through it.

It’s the same music, about 3 songs over and over and them singing along drunk.

Definitely A.

They will need as many complaints as they can get if they need to get a court order to deal with these people.

ThatMauveQuail · 11/07/2026 15:22

You don't have to record it. Normally you keep a log for a fortnight of times, duration, effect on you etc. Look at your council's website or ring them to find out what they need. Also to clarify whether it being Housing Association tenants makes any difference. Definitely do something or the arseholes win and your quality of life will suffer longterm. But don't approach them personally, they sound dangerous, and play dumb if they come round. Councils don't reveal who makes complaints.
