Green paint suggestions for Irish barn/cottages please.

My childhood family home is being painted and it falls to me to choose the colours for the outhouses. The property is likely to be sold within the next few years so we're thinking of what will look smart and have mass appeal rather than personal taste.

I know sage green is everywhere and we could just do the doors and trim in this - but I would like the barns/cottages to have a little character because we love them. After much discussion, the family have agreed that 'Tuscan green' (which we fondly imagine as sagish green) would be a good colour for the trim and 'olive green' would be nice for the doors and window frames.

None of us have been to art school and two pots of tester paint later, I am no closer to achieving this goal. As you can see from the picture, the 'sage green' is too light and cold while the 'olive green' is a warmer colour but they simply do not match. I am at an impasse.

Farrow and Ball has a dizzying array of greens. I just need two that match and will look cheerful and tasteful yet warm. All suggestions appreciated. We have a lovely joiner in the family who will be making shutters as well at some stage and the doors will be restored somewhat.

Thank you!! I know for some people this is their talent and I appreciate you!

Red x

I like the sage - and as it's a lighter shade it would be easier to paint over if a new owner wanted to.

The olive is the same shade as my front door when I was growing up <shudder> Shakin' Stevens did me no favours with that!

I googled pantone colour of the yr, this year it's a v pale grey but next yr is supposed to be a rich vibrant blue colour.

Not much help, am I. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I wouldn't choose green in Ireland. The countryside around is always so vivid and in all shades of green that whatever you choose, it will look flat and uninteresting compared to the landscape. I would go for a contrasting colour.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/07/2026 10:05

I think you need a darker sage. I think yours is too pale and I really dont like the door colour.

The trim in the second (ChatGPT) picture, the Sage Green (Darker) is lovely.

Use the same colour for door and trim.

I don’t think the green on the bottom looks right. It will look very dirty in no time. It just doesn’t flow

Do another AI generated photo with black to match the roof

The Farrow and Ball site recommends toning colours on each individual colour page if that helps. Personally I’d go for an apple green rather than sage. Much more appropriate to the setting imo.

Agree with this. We have so much green, it’ll just blend in.

Who about a deep raspberry colour with everything else in off-white or cream? Gives a very clean and classic look, with a nice touch of colour.

This is beautiful. Thank you for your input.

I would choose a turquoisish blue that has been greyed a bit.
A F&B Hague blue if you want darker or a F&B Yard blue if you prefer a more mid tone. Both of these have a greenish undertone I believe, but won't compete with nature and add a bit of contrast.

I'd do the door and trim in the same.

SuddenLightbulb · 13/07/2026 00:26

Traditionally doors and windows in farmhouses and outhouses were often painted Cardinal Red. Not fancy F and B, but rough and ready Rustoleum All-Surface. You’d get it in Woodie’s or anywhere.

If you want traditional, then the first darker green is the one. Sage or lighter greens are a no no on older cottages/houses/sheds.

worth using www.paintdial.com to try out some of the different paints and alternatives, It has been a lifesaver for us when choosing paint for our door (though 15 sample pots later...). The colours look so different in different light so using an AI generated image may not be the best idea!

Greens aren't traditional at all, though, for obvious reasons.
