aibu but is everything just so grey and drab in this country? I feel like everything looks and feels miserable.

I think COL has had a massive impact, everything feels so grey and stripped back, people aren’t spending money on outfits or flowers for their gardens. Everywhere you look it’s just a sea of beige or grey, It’s like not many people - only the rich now have the income for anything beautiful.

Weird because the atmosphere where i live is amazing at the moment

hahabahbag · 10/07/2026 22:54

Flower judging was today!

Peony1985 · 10/07/2026 22:56

Nope! It’s 35 degrees. It’s too hot to moan about anything but heat. Everyone is quite chill in my patch.

Dragonscaledaisy · 10/07/2026 22:57

The gardens are all full of colour here and there are lots of beautiful hanging baskets. Hedgerows are blooming and verges are full of wildflowers. The UK is looking beautiful at the moment, certainly not grey or drab in the area where I live.

BurntBroccoli · 10/07/2026 23:00

We’re in the middle of a heatwave - gardens aren’t going to look pristine and thankfully people haven’t been using all day long sprinklers just to keep their grass green.

You're being unreasonable, sun is shining, nature is blooming beautiful, birds have had their young and exploring their new world and the sunsets are wonderful,

Flower judging was today!

And that's why it was amazing today.

I've just had a swim in the sea with a friend, followed by fish and chips. The pub was buzzing and people were loving being in the water. No sign of beige or miserable people here, and I'm certainly not rich.

What I do hate about this country though, is how people moan all the time..

Boxiboxi21 · 11/07/2026 13:39

YABU just been to B&Q to buy grey paint and saw an economically challenged person loading potted flowers into her car.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · 11/07/2026 13:42

The sun is shining, the sky is blue and there are flowers everywhere.

I've just come back from the beach which was full of people relaxing and swimming and everyone seems in great spirits so not at all drab and grey here.

Bigtrapeze · 11/07/2026 13:42

Isn't it the least grey Britain has been since 1976 statistically? Are you near some nature, OP? I was running in the park at 8am and the birdsong was practically deafening. You sound like you could do with a bit of that.

backformoreofthesame · 11/07/2026 13:42

Which country ?

outfits don’t become grey once they get to a certain age

Have you been out of the country recently and are you comparing with a country with a different quality of light, wider, better maintained roads and bigger, better maintained housing stock?

I used to live abroad and the UK did always seem shabby and run down on visits to see family. Not everywhere, but strikingly areas I had to drive through between the airport and relatives houses, and some towns close to where relatives lived. I think it's a different culture (in the UK old houses are prestigious, in some countries it's completely the opposite unless it's a highly traditional listed building in museum conditions or a stately home/ palace!).

I'm not sure about clothing but if you've been somewhere where people dress colourfully that is also a contrast.

You acclimatise quickly and what you're used to seems normal.
