My 3 year old is obsessed with “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” after having it read to her at preschool, she knows all of the words and we bought it as one of her gifts for her birthday.

We read a book every night at bed, whenever she reaches for this it gives me such bad goosebumps!

I don’t know if it’s the way it’s written, the pictures, I genuinely feel panic when they’re trying to get away from the bear and he’s in the background of the pictures and then at their front door and they’ve forgotten to lock it. I absolutely detest it 🥴 it gives me the right creeps!

This is baring in mind that all I read myself is psychological thrillers and I’ve watched so much true crime I could probably commit the perfect murder 😂 why do I have such a panicky/spooked response to a children’s book fgs!

My friend has this, but her phobia is founded on the terror of being strapped to one of the rotating blades and imagining how awful the G-Force would be. Every time we drive past one, she shudders.

I think you're just unlocked a new fear. 😫😫😫

I was also scared of those black toilet cisterns. Would pull the chain and run or not flush at all. Not gonna lie they still scare me a bit now. Also ostriches. I don’t know what it is. I think it’s the way they seem to stare at you

Bats coming in the house.

Had one fly into the bedroom last night- very fast, round and round. Fright of my life. I screamed and hid under the covers while DH opened all the windows which it chose to ignore. It flew into another room and hopefully out the window. I’m still not quite over it!

The idea of ship wrecks still there under the sea. With fish and sea plants growing around human bones and peoples personal belongings. When I saw the movie Titanic and the camera morphed from the wreck to the ship as it was full of life, I found it so sad. It blows my mind that people dive down to the Lusitania occasionally. Not to mention all the 1000s of boats that are out there undiscovered..

Oh and misophobia.

They are still there, and biding their time. Big fan of Alan Garner.

And some day someone will write a novel in which the svarts and the Morrigan come out of the Edge and massacre the footballers?

Which reminds me, I love Alan Warner, but I can’t read the Escape from Fundindelve bit of The Weirdstone of Brisingamen as it has me clawing my face off with claustrophobia, especially the bit where they have to swim along a flooded tunnel where the water touches the roof.

My other fear is those airdancer things you see outside of garages.

The billie eilish song Bad Guy… makes me feel like I’m going to have a panic attack as soon as the musicy / not signing bit starts

It does have a bit of a creepy tune! I’m not a fan but I’ve heard it before I know what you mean!

Mines crabs. I can’t even look at pictures of them. I vomit and go hot and if I even think I’m gonna see one, so I avoid the beaches, rock pools etc. Even on holiday with stunning beaches and no little rock pools I will not go on the sand at all. I can’t walk past a fish stall. I’d sleep in a box full of tarantulas before I willingly went near a crab???

Mumtobabyhavoc · Yesterday 23:47

Bugs, but moths in particular. I fucking hate them and they freak me out. If one got inside I would take care of it by vacuuming it up at as much distance as possible using the long hose. Now, my vacuum is a canister without a disposable bag so if a bug is vacuumed up I'd have to empty the canister into the garbage which means it could fly out and into my face as it would obviously do. The alternative is to wait it out until it dies in the canister, of course. There are screens on the windows and patio door, but there's always a chance one will sneak in somehow.

Also, Starry Night by Van Gogh. I hate how popular it is because every time I see it I can hear the sky screaming.

Me too. Do you have a diagnosis of anything? Just out of interest…

mine is ‘wet’ so if I see you spill a drink which goes on a chair - I’m fine to be damp by sitting on it.
touching a door knob, table top, treading in wet things where I don’t know what the wet is tips me into madness and sanitizer.

La Sagrada Família. I’m sure to some it’s very beautiful but years ago I was in Barcelona and it was night time and the first glimpse I had of it was a bit of it at the end of a twisty dark street and it looked like something from actual hell (or a really bad acid trip). I had a total panic attack and couldn’t explain why. Boyfriend at the time was totally baffled.

I had the same reaction when we were driving, turned left and I came across the Cutty Sark.

One of my fears is big ships. I can’t go to ports as walking alongside a large ship freaks me out so much.

DeetAils · Yesterday 23:51

Izzyink · Yesterday 21:14

Bricked up old windows and doors. They always make me shudder. Also the opening credits of Call The Midwife where you see the massive ship at the bottom of a street.

Oh, I have just mentioned big ships. They are horrible!

I get freaked out if ever I boil some penne and they end up all stood standing upright around the pan when I go to drain. I find it really eerie.

Thanks for that. I now have a new one.

Waxworks and mechanical dolls have always had an effect on me - it's something about their eyes. They make me feel intensely uneasy, sick, and panicky.
It started after visiting the wax museum on the Isle of Wight as a child, and ever since then, places like Madame Tussauds trigger the same feeling. Mechanical dolls and animatronic figures on (Disney) rides have a similar effect.
On one Disney ride, we got stuck surrounded by the animatronic dolls. I felt panicky, cold and felt physically sick, but I had to hide my panic because I didn't want my children to see how scared I was.

Don’t go to the 7 mile beach in Negril, Jamaica! We went for our honeymoon, we were walking back to our room from dinner on our complex and I’m not joking you, 3 crabs ran across the path in front of us and onto the sand of the beach and they were at least 12-16 inches wide.

Tarantulas and spiders in general are my absolute worst fear. To the point that I spray ardap around every single window frame/door frame and skirting boards in my place every 6-8 weeks.

My daughter had a book called "My dad". It was a baby bear talking about how his dad had big claws and was really big and so on. As the book went on his friends got scared and disappeared one by one until it was just baby bear in the woods by himself. Then over a couple of pages a scary shadow slowly appeared with big claws etc and baby bear looked more and more scared and upset. Then the shadow turned out to be daddy bear and baby bear ran to him for a big hug and there were lots of smiles.

It was my daughter's favourite book! In fact it was one we've kept and she still remembers it fondly. She's 16!

Loving this thread. What a bunch of weirdo’s we are! In no particular order mine are:

Ivy but only when it’s growing up a tree trunk
Asthma inhalers…the little ‘whoosh’ when pressed omg, thankfully I don’t need to use one
Images of the Earth from space, especially close up at a side angle. I have to look away
Bird inside another bird eg Christmas turkey stuffed with duck. Wrong on so many levels

empty swimming pools

wind turbines - more so when they aren't moving

Hot air balloons - specifically the thought of being inside the balloon part whilst inflated

Do not look up coconut crabs! There is a photo of one holding onto a bin and it's the same size. I like crabs but if this crab wanted my bin, I would not fight it for it! 🤣

Mine is a texture. Do you remember those rulers that when you moved them, the picture would change and how they had bumpy lines? I can't stand the bumpy lines. I'm genuinely scared of touching them and it making that horrible scratching sound against your nails.

When our washing machine was delivered I found out that it had a dial like that. I wanted to send it back!!! Instead I've stuck tape over the dial. I was almost crying doing it and felt so pathetic! 🤣 I still have to hold my breath when I touch the dial and can only touch certain parts of it!

Crudd99 · Today 00:16

Logans run carousel. The way they're all clapping and cheering when people are literally exploding in front of them.

VerifiedAccount · Today 00:16

Another thing that made me feel really sick was a google earth picture of our house. You could see a line cutting the garden in half. No holes or anything like that (I'm a bit funny about holez like lots of peopke are), just a single line. It made me feel really sick. No idea why! Eventually figured out it was the washing line but it still made me feel sick. Why?!

Such a drama queen!

Those open backed lorries that carry orange gas canisters. Not sure you see them as much now. But I had an irrational fear that one was going to fall on me as it went round a corner, so I had to move away whenever one drove past.

I’m like this about car transporters! I have to get away from them asap! They rattle and rock around , I just can’t believe they are safe!!
See also - old wooden fairground rides that used to make creaking rattling noises.

I HATE wet door nobs! Especially in toilets. I try not to touch them and will even wrap my sleeves around my hands to avoid it. The irony is I often have wet hands leaving public toilets because dryers make me hot and bothered. It's people like me leaving the door handles wet in the first place! 🤣

Episode of Space 1999/UFO can't remember which. They come across a lot of space ships all linked together. Somewhere is this awful creature that if you see it you are mesmerized by it and you walk into it's mouth and then spat out like a mummy out of its mouth. One one of the crew had come across it before but managed to escape but now sacrifices himself if I remember rightly and willingly walks into the room where it is and into it's mouth, Terrifying. Similar with Night of the Demon where the hieroglyphics are passed and that means the demon will come for you and there is no escape. My DD's laughed at the remake but I'm still scared of the original black and white

Rewatched the Singing Ringing Tree recently, it's on Youtube - it's very disturbing, I saw it in black and white as a child but in colour it's even worse

I remember that episode of space1999. It scared me too. I watched not long ago its on itv x.
