To ask what scares you /freaks you out that you would not consider common? Mine is a children’s book!

My 3 year old is obsessed with “We’re Going On A Bear Hunt” after having it read to her at preschool, she knows all of the words and we bought it as one of her gifts for her birthday.

We read a book every night at bed, whenever she reaches for this it gives me such bad goosebumps!

I don’t know if it’s the way it’s written, the pictures, I genuinely feel panic when they’re trying to get away from the bear and he’s in the background of the pictures and then at their front door and they’ve forgotten to lock it. I absolutely detest it 🥴 it gives me the right creeps!

This is baring in mind that all I read myself is psychological thrillers and I’ve watched so much true crime I could probably commit the perfect murder 😂 why do I have such a panicky/spooked response to a children’s book fgs!

There was a kids TV drama called The Moondial, I think. It might have been based on a book. It was so atmospheric and creepy - I actually loved it though, wish I could see it again.

The face of Statue of Liberty.

i have no reason to feel this way but I just can’t look at it - the angular face reminds me of futuristic robotic creatures and really gives me the creeps.

Does anyone remember a children's TV series shown in the 1960s "The Singing Ringing Tree"? It was East German I think and is regularly voted one of the most terrifying things ever shown on children's television.

It absolutely scared the wits out of me

One thing that always freaked me out as a child - and still does - is Talos, the giant bronze statue in Jason and the Argonauts. The way it moves when it comes to life is unbearably creepy (probably due to the relatively low-tech animation techniques used at the time) and the black holes where its eyes should be, are the stuff of nightmares. I also found the Cyclops and the dancing skeletons scary but Talos was the most unnerving of all the special effects.😱

I really don’t like owls.

Double egg yolks literally gives me the shudders followed by spiders I'm not scared of them but the thought of their legs crawling on my skin makes my hairs stand up and my gag reflex kick in , I never knew I was claustrophobic until I went for an MRI of my head and I had this grid thing screwed on to keep my head in place and as soon as my shoulders started to get in I freaked out my arms and legs flew up to try and stop myself going any further and it felt like I couldn't breathe , that gave me serious intrusive thoughts and now if I think about tight spaces or a room with a small door and no windows or a small opening my heart starts pounding .

This is better, it's a parody with Warwick Davis.

Mine was the moomins when I was a child. Not sure why, they just gave me the creeps despite being perfectly innocuous really.

So justified! There is a sort of trendy gift shop near me and I happened upon some moomins merch in there the other day. Ugh! Just WHY??

It’s available on you tube! I loved it and I’ve watched it on there.

Yes! Though I don't remember being scared by it - more intrigued by the unrealistic scenery and the weird bear costume. Also the overdubbing when you could stilll hear the original language faintly, That giant fish was a bit creepy, though!

Distorting mirrors, and looking into any reflecting surface that has a distorting effect.

Wet paper of any description, like used napkins, or when a label comes off a bottle when washing it for recycling.
I also can't stand things in water that shouldn't be there, things floating in the sea, a swimming pool or when washing up. I hate baths too. Odd!

That creepy as fuck alien ET. Creeps me out that you can see its HEART beating THROUGH its chest. Might have something to do with being forced to watch it the night before I went in for major heart surgery….either way, everytime I see the thing I get a full blown panic attack.
Most of my family get it, but my husband occasionally thinks it’s hilarious to do the voice and that freaks me out too.

ET is a creepy fucker! I was absolutely terrified of him as a kid - didn’t help that it was always on over Xmas too!

The light thing is sooo interesting!

I wonder if any of this is related to past lives and the like if you believe in them, I don’t know what I believe in to be fair but maybe I was hunted and killed by a bear 😂

I've never liked stone spiral staircases. I have wondered in the past if I fell down one in a previous life.

Charminggoldfinch · Yesterday 23:05

Did anyone watch Earth Warp at primary school on the 90’s? It was one of those educational VHS’. Jesus Christ when the alien space egg/ space ship was on the water at the beginning that scared the shit out of me (and I’m genuinely getting jittery typing this!).
also I was weirdly scared of World War II breaking out again after learning about it in year 5 and I was scared that the blitz would happen and I’d have to hide in the cellar!

I read The Owl Sevice when I was a child though maybe 8/9. Scared the shit out of me.

Oh and me, the scratching in the attic!

RobertaFirmino · Yesterday 23:07

I was a primary school child in the early 80s and am pretty certain I'm freaked out by pylons thanks to the Public Information Films that occasionally interspersed children's TV back then.

The other thing, and I still find it terrifying today, was the intro to a Schools show called Picture Box. The music was so unsettling and that creepy, rotating glass casket. Horrible.

LifesabagofRevels · Yesterday 23:08

The music for the Picture Box ITV schools series that was on in the 80s. I looked it up recently and it still scares the crap out of me.

FirstTimer888 · Yesterday 23:08

The billie eilish song Bad Guy… makes me feel like I’m going to have a panic attack as soon as the musicy / not signing bit starts

Meringues. I can’t explain it but I find them just awful. Can barely look.

LoupyLoo1 · Yesterday 23:10

TV or YouTube presenters or Instagram experts with macroglossia freak me out big time. Thankfully, not many of them, but still.

Not me, but threads like this always bring up clusters of holes and empty swimming pools. I think the former even has a name.

Again not me, but I had a friend who couldn’t even looK at spiral staircases.

Mine is niche, but if I’m up on the gods at the theatre and there’s a light fitting/chandelier straight ahead that hangs over a three ‘floors’ of emptiness, to look directly at the light gives me huge colly-wobbles.

I have the chandelier thing too…
