AIBU to think about moving near the sea for cooler Summers?

With the climate changing and this incredibly hot, unbearable weather becoming the new normal is it time to move to the sea? We live in SW England but very inland aged 60 and finding the heat so much harder to cope with than when we were younger. I'm just desperate to get in some cold water daily. Or am I just feeling overheated (and menopausal) and realistically it's actually grey and rainy most of the year. If you could would you move to the sea? or do you live by the sea and think it's not that great for most of the year?

Do your research before you consider it further, visit the place or places you are considering in January and February.

TheScreensNurseTheScreens · 09/07/2026 19:09

lol, I do live by the sea - North Kent coast - and I can promise you it has been hotter than hell here for weeks. Coupled with the fact that we can’t actually get in the sea due to Southern Water discharging sewage in it on some of the hottest days of the year so far, has not made for a pleasant summer. And let’s not get started about the ten days without drinking water supplies thanks to South East Water…

Maybe it’s better in the SW?
(I still love it here though 😁)

Teenagerantruns · 09/07/2026 19:10

We live in south West, 10 mins walk from sea, its still hot...

campocaro · 09/07/2026 19:11

North east coast wonderfully cool 19/20C . But you’ll have to hunker down in the winter…

Ablondiebutagoody · 09/07/2026 19:11

I live by the sea and its nice all year. Cooling breeze in summer, fewer people in winter.

Glitchymn1 · 09/07/2026 19:12

Scotland might be better!

i live on the Isle of Wight and could have posted this word for word. Particularly about the sewerage.

Heronwatcher · 09/07/2026 19:13

I’m not sure being near the see will make it much better- won’t you just be inundated with crowds of angry hot people all the time? Some places near the sea can also get unbearably hot too.

I am seriously considering moving a bit further north though if this is going to continue long term. Found myself looking longingly at Aberdeen today- I think it was 17 degrees and the beaches on that coastline are beyond stunning (and yes I do know the area so I am aware of the challenges in the winter!).

SqueakyFromme · 09/07/2026 19:16

It's still utterly Hellish and I'm right on a harbour inlet which provides some breeze I suppose but you aren't being Unreasonable. Unless you live directly on a shoreline it won't be that much different

Heronwatcher · 09/07/2026 19:23

For example- this is Lunan Bay, where the forecast for tomorrow is 21 degrees with a gentle breeze. And the sea will be freezing, and so far as I am aware not a sewage discharge recently.

I live by the sea in North Wales and it’s been hot, but there’s a delicious sea breeze. Highly recommended. I wouldn’t move to a popular seaside resort though, imagine the crowds and topless sunburnt men.

Lucky you! Do you get any sea breeze in this heat? At least you can walk and get in the sea to cool off I guess.

Lots of seaside areas have regular sewage discharge.
my mum lives in Lancashire and pretty much the whole Lancashire coast is out.

check the sewage discharge map.
https://datahq.sas.org.uk/sewage-data-hq/

some inland areas have lakes or rivers that are safe to dip in if you are wanting to cool off - there are some paid venues in this network

https://nowca.org/

otherwise try the outdoor swimmer magazine of facebook group and ask about your location.

https://www.outdoorswimmingsociety.com/uk-wild-swimming-groups/

the rivers and lakes are up around 25 at the moment in the south and even the sea is pretty warm - they’re declaring a marine heatwave.

Sounds lovely! I have never been to North Wales, what's it like in Winter?

Thank you for the heads up on the sewage situation. Didn't realise it's so dire! Shocking! I'll have a good read

Logically, no it’s not that much cooler. But actually I’m just about to put my seaside home on the market, so sure let’s drive up interest!

80smonster · 09/07/2026 19:32

We’re thinking the same! I reckon it’s an easier decision when you don’t have to factor in schools. Whereabouts you thinking OP?

Imuptoolate · 09/07/2026 19:38

I live near the sea and I do love it, but unless you are actually on the seafront with the breeze blowing in your face it is still hot in a heatwave! Plus it’s humid (sooo sweaty and sticky) because you’re surrounded by water.

But it is beautiful and I would never live anywhere that’s more than 10 mins away from a beach as that’s what I’ve grown up with!

OurLadyOfLeisure · 09/07/2026 19:42

I’d love to live near the sea.

But you’re probably better off in a heatwave in the countryside surrounded by woodland.
We live in a town but close to woods - it’s amazing the temperature drop when you just get close to it, not even under the shade of the trees.

fuckeditupbadly · 09/07/2026 19:44

Id say move north rather than just coast. It rarely goes above mid 20s here..beautiful day today. Hot but not unbearable, humid or oppressive

Seaside folk go to school too

Lordofmyflies · 09/07/2026 19:47

We live 20 mins walk from the beach in Cornwall. It is lovely to go for a dip in weather like this but it's still hot at work and weekends / summer holidays are usually so busy that we either have to go at 8am or 7pm.
The best time in September / October when the sea is warm and the crowds have thinned.

IngridBurger · 09/07/2026 19:49

West coast Scotland. Cool enough but my, the midgies! Wouldn't want to live anywhere else though.

ElvesDoNotWalkintheDarkEarth · 09/07/2026 19:52

We live in Devon and with this weather I have no desire to be anywhere else! I went into London recently and couldn't wait to get back home. It's way too hot inland.

After school the kids go to the beach and go body boarding. Perfect antidote to a hot day in the classroom. The breeze is amazing and we either go sea swimming with them or paddle. Absolute bliss.

I love it all year round to be honest, even with stormy seas.

Hamela · 09/07/2026 19:54

Ten mins as the crow flies from the coast here, it's unbearably humid 💦

I do love the empty winter beaches though.
