AIBU to think paramedics should have summer uniforms in the heatwave?

Just seen the paramedics on the news re the heatwave.
They are rushing round looking after everyone, whose needed medical help in the heatwave. They are getting all hot themselves but noticed they had their normal uniform of trousers on.

When they are looking after other people shouldn't they have some summer wear.
Seems harsh if not.
They don't need trousers in this heat surely?😥
They are seeing record numbers of people.

At least in some parts of the country they are allowed to wear shorts. Most of them don't though cos the shorts are horrible.

I voted you are not being unreasonable. The exception to this would be the motorcycle and pedal cycle paramedics who need protective wear.

String vests?

String vests?

That's a step to far.

I am a police officer thankfully not uniform anymore.

Can you imagine how many bodily fluids paramedics deal with during their shift.
Can't imagine they'd want shorts!!
Their full kit and footwear is also better safety for any violence or resistance they face.

(We had to walk or drive around with thick trousers, boots, and a stab vest, plus a belt or harness carrying our PPE- AND WEAR A HAT
Also most of our vehicles aren't AirCon

Then public would moan if we drank a drink or had an ice cream in sight of the public...!)

It’ll be down to health, safety and hygiene requiring them to wear full uniform to carry the job out safely. I have to in my job too although I’m not out saving lives.

It can get very hot and uncomfortable but keeping hydrated helps a lot. You end up learning to cope with it and acclimatise in a way. Some days I do feel totally wiped out from the heat though, especially if it’s humid.

I guess they need to be able to kneel down next to patients basically every shift though, including on the pavement etc?

nocoolnamesleft · 09/07/2026 20:48

Their uniforms pretty much double as PPE.

Paramedics sometimes have to make entry into people’s homes through broken windows, apparently. Wouldn’t fancy doing that in shorts. Plus the ambulance is air conditioned.
