To boycott Turkey and Egypt after homophobic action against cruise ship?

Holdonforsummer · 09/07/2026 16:48

Now Egypt has turned away a cruise ship full of LGBT passengers, following in the footsteps of Turkey who had already barred them from docking. Egyptian authorities haven’t stated an official reason but Turkey clearly stated it was because the passengers on the ship didn’t confirm to their society’s ‘moral’ standards. I find this disgusting and outrageous that any country thinks they can start to pick and choose which categories of tourists they will and won’t accept. I for one will now boycott Turkey and Egypt and will not book holidays there in the future. I refuse to support homophobic regimes and feel that the only thing that might change their mind is if many other UK citizens do the same.

Good for them.

And I am a bisexual woman.

The LGBT lifestyle does not align with those countries core beliefs and religion. They have every right to not allow people into their country that they feel do not align with Turkish/Egyptian morals and beliefs which are openly against homosexuality.

Therefore, I hope we, as a country, grow a backbone and do the same!! I hope we stop allowing people into England that don't share our countrys morals and beliefs on such things as welcoming homosexuality, opposing the cruelty of halal meat and being horrified at child marriage.

There are plenty of safe and welcoming places for LGB people to visit. Why would they want to go to a place that openly condems them?

Edited

Good for them??

Ofc they're entitled to ban, it doesn't make it right. They should be criticised.

It's hardly 'good' that women like you in Egypt face this kind of treatment due to those views.

I agree with you re immigration except if you ban halal meat are you also going to ban kosher meat? The Jewish community are under enough attack as it is, surely?

Unclear whether she was being mean or repeating something she’d heard. The mother of the boy was convinced it was the former. The girl was given a much harder time (here) than countries that execute gays. Go figure

I see, thanks. Sounds very odd. I will look at the thread.

nomas · 09/07/2026 22:46

So Israel not allowing gay marriages to be performed = fine

Other ME countries not allowing it = not fine.

Bizarre logic.

You really need to read the explanations so you can understand the difference

Was apartheid, or Saudi Arabia banning women from voting, to name 2, also 'their country, their rules'?

Are you just cutting and pasting the same reply over and over?

Their country. Their rules.

@nunamenuyear , well obviously but that’s not the question posed by the OP.
I suppose at least these nations are honest about the attitude of Islam to gay people. Queers for Palestine should take note.

Love gays, kill children. Yay!

I find the idea of an LGBT cruise weird. I don’t generally base my holidays around my sexual orientation. If I were organising such a cruise I would choose to visit countries that are known to be culturally liberal. Turkey is known to have become more Muslim and less tolerant under Erdogan and Egypt just tolerates Western cultural practices in its tourist spots for the money but many hate them as they dislike drinking alcohol and sexual permissiveness

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 09/07/2026 23:16

What about the Pharaohs? Did they tolerate homosexuality? Apparently, the ancient Greeks did. They worshipped the male form.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 09/07/2026 23:17

Wasn't at least one Pharaoh a trans man?

Sandiedoors · 09/07/2026 23:20

I guess they can decide who comes into their country. They won’t care whether you visit or not.

2Rebecca · 09/07/2026 23:23

The pharaohs and ancient Greeks are dead so don’t get to make the rules any more. Greece isn’t Turkey anyway. The ship is unlikely to have been turned away in Greece which isn’t Muslim

Hateshepsut was a great woman, not a trans man!

  • I suppose it's probably like a lot of singles cruises. Only maybe more focused on casual stuff.
Jane379 · 09/07/2026 23:32

Sorry, I meant to quote OakleyAnnie :

There was such outrage here about this 8 year old ‘homophobe’ who has been called a bitch. Many pp agreed and said she was disgusting.'

It's worth noting 48% of the voters thought OP was YABU. Plenty of people on AIBU are looking for a fight/trolling, and deliberately take extreme positions which I suspect explains a lot of the replies being horrible about the girl. Plenty of replies criticised the DS.

It's also worth noting MN is not a hive mind & has huge numbers of users. It's doesn't necessarily follow that people criticising the girl support Egypt & Turkey.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 09/07/2026 23:33

Gay men love cruising - that's for sure.

Charys · 09/07/2026 23:34

@GoneWithTHeWindJammers haha! So true.

HolyHannah · 09/07/2026 23:38

I don't travel to countries where I don't agree with their rules or cultural norms. This includes turkey, Egypt and several others. Sad because I love to travel, I've always wanted to go to China,, but their human rights record is appalling. I went to Russia (before the war and before they outlawed gay rights again) and I'm glad I did as I doubt I'll go again in my life time.

likelysuspect · 09/07/2026 18:15

Most ME regimes do not support homosexuality.

I always wonder about the juxtaposition of views like OPs against the majority support in the UK for the Palestinian 'state'.

I abhor homophobia but two wrongs don't make a right and most humans have the intellectual capability to understand that two truths can co exist. Is homophobia more prevalent in the ME? Yes. I am pretty sure it is and that is condemnable. Do I agree with genocide? No, of course not. I just don't think that killing, maiming and displacing tens of thousands of children is acceptable or a fair consequence of some of their parents being homophobic. You seriously need to get your morals checked if you think it is.

Ponoka7 · 09/07/2026 23:46

Jane379 · 09/07/2026 22:49

What about lesbians? If someone suspects someone is lesbian, they might be correctively raped, forced to marry etc They don't need necessarily to have had sex or a relationship for that. Gay men also, or they might be honour killed.

I agree that the situation of women & girls needs much more attention.

That was my point. The life of a gay man is much easier than that of a gay woman, any woman. A man can marry and not have sex with his wife. She could then be killed for not getting pregnant. As you said, life for a lesbian would be one of abuse. Yet the focus always seems to be on gay men.

blubberyboo · 09/07/2026 23:58

@Holdonforsummer are you just as outraged at Egypt having one of the worst records for sex equality? Was that also enough to put you off your holiday? Or do women not matter? Just powerful western men who should know better than to book a gay cruise to a Muslim country?

suburberphobe · 10/07/2026 00:06

Interesting thread...

In some gay countries

Pray tell... where are they?

Let and let live I say.

And. Do No Harm.

It's the gay people living in those countries I feel sorry for.

They hang them in Iran..... 😭

Pudmyboy · 10/07/2026 00:18

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/07/2026 22:25

Watch Pride.

Gay people have a history of supporting oppressed groups regardless of whether they are supported in turn. Fucking noble. Even if Palestinians aren't woke, they don't deserve to have their babies deliberately shot through the head.

It's not denial. It's basic human rights.

The same way I support women's rights. Including women who probably hate me.

You know who started the war, by murdering babies in several kibbutz and then phoned their mothers to boast about it?
