Aibu to be annoyed at Drs flippant comment about autism?

DS (8) has been in hospital for a couple of days, hes ok and has been sent home tonight. He was diagnosed with autism a few years ago and it’s something that he struggles with on a daily basis. During his time in hospital he has been really masking as he struggles with new environments, he has been very quiet and withdrawn to the point I got asked by quite a few different drs/nurses if he was non verbal. The only Dr he did talk to was a GP who was asking him lots of questions about a really special interest of DS’s, however other than these questions he didn’t interact with the DR. So much so that he wouldn’t answer if he was in pain or where hurt etc and needed lots of coaxing. As we were being discharged he said to me “I wouldn’t worry, as a gp I reckon he’s not autistic he’s just a really clever kid”. This was after only meeting him a few hours prior (this dr hadn’t been there the whole time DS was in).

now I know in his own way he was probably just trying to be nice but after the years of fighting we have done to get help for DS I feel like it just completely minimises what he has to go through every day! I think I’m also exhausted and have been through a hell of a few days so I know I may be being more sensitive than I normally am. Aibu

Very odd and inappropriate comment

but your child has just got home from a few nights in hospital, don’t stew on this!!

He was being treated at hospital by a GP?

zigizigahh · Today 19:29

@Inprephe saw a number of consultants but for some reason it was a gp that was doing the rounds on the ward today. I did think it was a bit odd. He also said that he had to check with a consultant everything he said to us so essentially we had two visits each time.

Was it maybe a resident dr doing their GP training rotation with six months in paeds? If so, they maybe be relatively inexperienced and thinking they were being ‘nice’. They should not have said that but I would probably let it go.

You’ve had a hellish few days and your son has just got back from the hospital. Don’t be cross about this odd comment and instead curl up with your ds in front of the tv!

I have 5DC all on the spectrum. Only 2 diagnosed. I don't need a diagnosis for the other 3 to know that they are. Ignore and move on. His opinion is irrelavant.

Thanks all, I know I’m definitely focussing on the wrong thing, I think my brain is just all over the place at the minute. DS is getting lots of cuddles (and ice cream) this evening 😂
