Adventure locations for ND kids

sunshine244 · Today 18:20

I have ND children who aren't keen on holidays involving lounging by the pool/beach, theme parks or kids club type activities. They prefer adventurous activities, exploring, unusual places to stay etc. ADHD means they crave a lot of novelty.

I'm keen to try and get abroad next year and looking for inspiration for adventurous type locations they might enjoy. Their favourite holiday was Iceland where we spent the whole time outdoors at volcanic areas, glacier and waterfalls etc.

Would love some recommendations for other European locations that can involve lots of adventurous exploration.

Switzerland

lots of walking, swimming in lakes, rivers, outdoor sports.

bloody expensive but then so is Iceland

Austria - we’re off there in a couple of weeks with our autistic 10 year old and hoping it will be this sort of holiday.

DD has also loved Norwegian fjord cruises, but then she likes routine and predictability so that might not work as well for your kids. There’s plenty to do in the ports though in terms of outdoorsy activities. Norway as a land holiday would be pretty pricey though I think.

You can do a Switzerland type holiday in Northern Italy or Slovenia and it will be a bit cheaper.

We had a great time in the Brecon Beacons - mix of hiking, swimming, and seeing the national show caves.

Do you think they'd enjoy interrailing?

(In our family it's me that really doesn't like anywhere too loud and busy)

Switzerland or Austria could be good if I can persuade them to fly that far (one is very scared of planes and we're in scotland so don't fancy driving/trains that far.

They do enjoy train trips though so a mix of flying then interrailing could be possible. I've never done that though so no idea where to start looking at it.
