AIBU to wonder whether I should report an accidental offence?

So I recently found out that I unknowingly and unwittingly broke the law last year.

No victim involved and I honestly and truly didn't know I'd done it.

Would you report yourself or just accept you got away with it?

A criminal conviction would destroy my career. But I also feel terrible that I've done something illegal.

WWYD?

No, everything went to my previous address and they convicted me in my absence. I didn't even know I had the speeding ticket that tipped me over tbe limit.

You cannot be the only person this has happened to!

Go straight to jail

Probably not, but I think it's also an offence in itself that I didn't change the addresses on my driving licence or car V5!!

You’ll also have an unpaid fine for the underlying offence then, which is still enforceable I’m afraid.

Divebar2021 · Today 16:27

So your car wasn’t registered at the new address and you didn’t divert your post. Was your insurance showing the correct address …. Although presumably your insurance was invalid if you were driving while banned.

My insurance had the correct address, it's one I did remember to change.

I have no issues paying a fine- how will I know I owe it or where to pay it?

There's no point reporting yourself now, it has passed and nobody was injured or wronged while you did it. But definitely stop speeding.

I mean I wouldn't do anything about that now, but remember you will need to inform your insurers at some point and somehow or you'll be committing insurance fraud and I dunno how that works when you drove throughout the ban.

SilenceInside · Today 16:31

It would be more sensible to concentrate making sure that everything is now correct with your driving licence, any unpaid fines, insurance etc. Also that you have systems in place to manage all of these things better despite your ADHD.

Yes, I definitely will.

It wasn't multiple speeding tickets, I got 6 points for not supplying driver details (as the ticket went to my old address), 3 points for the speeding and had 3 points from a couple of years ago.

I have a new car and new insurance since getting my licence back. (Coincidentally) I disclosed the prior ban to the new insurers.

Once you update you docs with the DVLA they’re likely to chase you for the fine. It will be hefty as it’s been unpaid so long.

You might want to talk to a solicitor about how to regularise the position now without confessing to driving while banned. It’s an imprisonable offence so iI’d do whatever you can to avoid revealing this.

What was the date of the conviction? When was the speeding offence?

Now I'm confused. Prior ban? So... You've had more than one? Regardless, I don't get how the insurance renewal hasn't gone through the roof. You don't need to tell them about points (or presumably bans), they get that info from some database. So they just came back to you with a quote for this year no questions asked?

Anyway what's done is done, but I can't see how there won't be some more repercussions (because of the insurance).

Perhaps I just haven't understood properly, not meant to be a pile on.

No I mean prior as in I'm not banned now but I disclosed that I have been.

OP posts:
LavenderOregano · Today 16:49

Is that the ban or the speeding offence?

AccidentalCriminal · Today 16:51

The ban, I'm not sure when the speeding was as it's now dropped off my license along with the failure to disclose. I guess the ban cancelled the points?

Felinesonmeshirt · Today 16:55

Sorry, I’ve just seen it’s over a year ago. Were you informed of the speeding offence by receipt of a NIP 172

LavenderOregano · Today 16:56

The ban wipes out the points but not the record- check the website.

Very surprised to hear that this hasn’t affected your insurance premiums!

I assume so but it would have gone to my previous address.

No doubt it would have been returned to the police office as Gone Away. Forget it.

They can’t. The NIP has to be received by the registered keeper within 14 days. OP didn’t receive anything. The police can’t go back over NIPS that were issued over a year ago.
