AIBU to think if it was sent like that it can be returned like that?

I recently bought some items from H&M for my child. Some were hits, the shorts were not. Apparently I am way out of touch there. Anyway we opened one pair to try on, it was a weird strong smell of fabric freshener but I paid it no mind, different productions give different smells. Child tried them on and rejected them, took them off, put them back in the bag. They got sent back. H&M claim the shorts have been worn significantly, the tags removed and the garment dirtied. They may have, BUT NOT BY US. I feel extremely naive that I assumed if it was good enough to send out to me it was good enough to send back. So I suppose this is a warning: you have to check every item and complain before you do a return. I'm out £23 for a pair of shorts that we never wanted anyway. Beware! Complaining has got me nowhere. Now I have to quality control on everything that comes in all the time, and I'm not sure how I would.prove it wasn't us anyway.

I once had a dress sent to me that had clearly been worn, marks under the arms etc. I immediately complained and it was sorted. Surely the fabric softener smell was a giveaway that they had been worn?

I know someone who records opening parcels after being stung in a similar way and not being believed. For clothes she opens, checks labels, seams, marks etc
