Confused by this Mumsnet job term

I often see posters refer to themselves as holding a ‘high powered job’

This always makes me wonder, what jobs are they? I’ve always thought high powered to be roles such as the Prime Minister.

Can anyone who holds such a role please enlighten me 😃

I had a job that had Chief as part of the title. I quite liked the status that came from it. Got sacked though. Don't miss the stress. Only miss the money a bit. Not sure I want it again

I kind of understand it to mean the sort of job that ends up taking considerably more than 40 hours a week, with high responsibility and stress, but pays you well to compensate.

Being PM is the extreme version I suppose. I suspect most people who use the term on MN are more Assistant Regional Manager of Paperclips.

Crunchymum · Yesterday 22:23

I assume it means C-Suite or equivalent.

Crushed23 · Yesterday 22:23

A job with lots of responsibility, decision-making and a lot of people reporting into you, perhaps? Usually high paid but not all high paid jobs are high powered. For example dentists earn $$$ but I wouldn’t call dentist a high powered job.

WillThingsEverBeFergaliciousAgain · Yesterday 22:24

I always assume anyone saying that is unemployed or does the old MN classic of taking in ironing.

Nobody I've met irl with a high powered job says it at all, let alone says it like that.

Edited

As long as it’s not Assistant to the Regional Manager.

Thepeopleversuswork · Yesterday 22:24

Its a loose term isn’t it?

It could mean anything from CEO of BP to assistant regional manager for Dunder Mifflin.

I tend to think that people who describe themselves as having “high powered jobs” probably don’t.

SilenceInside · Yesterday 22:24

I don’t hold such a role, but I tend to think it means a job with a lot of responsibility, either large budget, managing lots of people ie C-suite level roles, or performing a high profile role like a KC or judge.

Tonissister · Yesterday 22:25

I always initially think they are Magic Circle firm lawyers. But then they wouldn't waste time on MN, so they are probably MLM girl-bosses.

I assume it means C-Suite or equivalent.

In which case, it’s impressive they find the time to post so much on here!

What does that mean ?

CEO, CFO, CTO… anything beginning with Chief.

To me it means they came from a privileged background & have a job. They feel they work harder than everyone else because they’ve never met anyone on minimum wage. Although they have, but their office cleaners obviously don’t work as hard as them because they only earn a fraction of their salary.

The bin men emptying their rubbish don’t “work hard” the same as the HCAs taking their blood & cleaning up their vomit on 12 hour shifts don’t “work hard”.

High powered is a mindset. If I failed to do my job, people might actually die as a result. But nobody here would consider it high powered.

It’s just a way of saying “I’m better than you”.

If you can't walk away from your job, can't delegate to others, but have to spend much of your non-work time thinking about how to keep things on track, then i'd call that either a HPJ or a bad case of hero-syndrome.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · Yesterday 23:39

I had a high AND powered job as cabin crew 😊 ✈️

PollyBell · Yesterday 23:42

I want to ask are they bomb disposal experts

KittyWilkinson · Yesterday 23:47

I've got a Karcher and can jet wash driveways. Does that count?
