to think that bread will last longer if stored in the fridge in 30+ degrees weather?

I don't have any space in the freezer to store my hovis sliced wholemeal loaf.
Any thoughts?
Anyone else doing this?

Yes of course. Growing up, our bread was always in the fridge to make it last. I keep mine out of the fridge by preference for better texture but during heat waves it goes in the fridge.

Thingsthatgo · 06/07/2026 17:41

Yes, it will. It goes a bit hard in the fridge though, so only really good for toast.

FadedRed · 06/07/2026 17:44

I was told bread goes stale and hard six time quicker stored in the fridge. You’d be better freezing fresh bread, then just thawing the slices you plan to use, takes a few seconds in a microwave or a bit longer in the air.

It dries out in the fridge. But it should at least not go mouldy.

Buy half loaves for short term purposes?

lmnabc · 06/07/2026 17:46

I always store bread in the fridge

Agree with the freezer storage method over putting bread in the fridge.

Just take out as many or few slices as you need, it will defrost so quickly in the heat anyway, ready to eat, and fresh as the day you bought/made it!

ErrolTheDragon · 06/07/2026 17:47

Put in a freezer bag and seal it with a clippit, that should minimise the moisture loss.

Bemused at someone advising you to freeze it when your OP makes it clear you don’t have space to do that!

It's not something I had ever done until recently but yes, it works. My local Tesco stopped stocking my favourite rolls so I swapped to a different brand, which start going mouldy about 45 minutes after I put them in the cupboard 🙄

I shoved them in the fridge last time I bought them and they lasted much longer. The texture of the roll doesn't change but I can't speak for sliced bread.

igelkott2026 · 06/07/2026 17:49

We keep ours in the freezer and get slices out as we need them. Doesn't take long to defrost in this heat!

BatchCookBabe · 06/07/2026 17:49

100% agree. Everything (fresh) last longer if it's kept out of the heat. Got my butter in the fridge, ketchup, fruit, eggs, bread, and potatoes and other veg. It preserves them.

Notquitethetruth · 06/07/2026 17:51

I keep bread in the fridge always. Wrapped properly it won't dry out. Just give it a few minutes to get to room temperature when you take it out.

FeralWoman · 06/07/2026 17:57

Definitely keep it in the fridge. It will stop it from going mouldy. It might dry out a little bit but at least it’s still edible and not wasted. Put it in a plastic bag or sealed container in the fridge to minimise it drying out.

I live in a hot country. Keeping bread in the fridge is very normal here.

Stopping the air getting to bread will help to preserve bread, whether in the fridge or not. However, this accelerated staleness happening when bread is stored in a fridge, not frozen, is not just exposure to air, so wrapping bread up does not prevent this process called retrogradation, which is when starch molecules crystallise as the bread cools when stored in the fridge.

Thanks very much.
The bread is in the fridge!
