Do I have OCD?

ToyStory20000008 · 06/07/2026 12:23

I grew up in a house that was only cleaned when people came to visit. This would happen about 4 times a year so we were all drafted in and it was very stressful. My sister has reacted to this by never cleaning her house and never inviting anyone round. I on the other hand like to have a house that if someone knocked on the door, they could walk in and I would not be embarrassed.
Family are now saying I have OCD and it is not healthy to live in such a clean house.

So I am setting out here what I aim to do and how often so you lovely people can tell me who you think is right.

Daily
keep kitchen and bathrooms clear of mess and tidy, wiping down kitchen surfaces after each meal
Hoover small entry hall to stop muck being walked in
Keep rest of house as tidy as possible

Every 1 to 2 weeks
Clean bathrooms
Hoover whole house
Dust whole house
Change and wash bedding and towels

Less often
Clean windows
clear our a cupboard
declutter
skirting boards

You hoover daily? That could perhaps qualify as OCD.

Don’t be ridiculous! Unless accompanied by compulsions/intrusive thoughts of course it’s not!!

KilkennyCats · 06/07/2026 15:47

Op’s cleaning routine as she described could not be seen as in any way compulsive 🤔
A bit on the lax side, if anything.

I agree, OP does not appear to have OCD.

In your post you actually used the words ...

" For some people who have OCD it is about being super clean and tidy"
And you left it at that.

This reduction is the stereotype, the meme, the misunderstanding, the ignorance.
In further posts you've explained yourself better, but your first post was absolutely lacking in any understanding of OCD.

My first post was brief because I was eating, but I knew what I meant 😂

menopausalfart · 06/07/2026 16:29

A person without OCD will also get intrusive thoughts. Did I turn the light off, gas off, unplug the iron, etc even when they know they have. A person with OCD will have these thoughts every day. In fact, these thoughts can dictate your whole day from the minute you wake up. They can be all consuming. I was diagnosed when I was very young. It started with numbers. If I gave my DM a kiss at night, it would have to be an even number of kisses. I wouldn't let her leave until it felt right. These compulsions were added to over the years. I have it somewhat under control now, but it can manifest itself without me realising it's happening.

outerspacepotato · 06/07/2026 16:34

You grew up in filth and you've broken out of the crab pot. The family accusing you of having a mental illness and being unhealthy living in an average clean house are trying to drag you back into the filth crabpot by spouting bullshit.

Look up crab mentality if you want some insight into the dynamics playing out here.

You know it's ok to be clean. You know you don't have OCD. But your family is accusing you with lies to get you back into the pot. That's a really toxic family dynamic and you might want to start distancing yourself. Grey rock them. Everything's fine, we're fine, that's it. Give them as little info on your life as possible.

Chocolatefreak · 06/07/2026 16:35

I do similar, OP. I am a bit messy but ok on basic hygiene. Clean kitchen and bathroom. You sound fine and not obsessive.

RocketPanda · 06/07/2026 16:37

The OCD can weave itself into all facets of your life too. When my phone rings my first thought is someone is calling to say my children are dead. Catastrosizing everything in case my children are hurt and its my fault because I should have realised. Days out were an absolute mind fuck. School trips I still can't talk about without triggering panic.
I'm going to leave this thread now because I can feel some anxiety .

This seems quite reasonable to me, however OCD isn't really defined by what you do so much as
-Why you do it
-How flexible you can be
-How you would feel if you weren't to do it
-Whether it gets it in the way of your the rest of your life

Even mild OCD compulsions will interfere with aspects of your life.

Since you don't believe you have OCD why not show your family this website? https://www.ocduk.org/ocd/introduction-to-ocd/ so they understand & can hopefully see the difference

I'm not afraid of germs I just like pouring bleach or spraying antibac over them. I've always found it satisfying. Like a power thing rather than OCD I think. I certainly don't fret over using public toilets or touching door handles etc in public anyway and my house is not spotless in the slightest.

basiically · 06/07/2026 17:07

I actually think cleaning the bathroom, changing bedsheets and hoovering every 1-2 weeks is more on the dirty side than the clean!

I agree thought it was just me that was thinking it.

Familyyy · 06/07/2026 17:23

You dont have OCD you have lazyness.
Sorry but i`ll say it how i read it, you clean up once every 2 weeks basically do the bere minimum in that time.
Im a single mum to 3 teens wft and even i clean up more than you.
Your bathroom must stink of piss if your only cleaning it once every fortnight.

RoseOliviaAu · 06/07/2026 17:25

Does it feel compulsive or obsessive? Do you feel something bad may happen if you don’t do it? Do you feel like you HAVE to do it and can’t stop yourself from doing it? Does it cause distress if you’re not allowed to do it? Do you think about doing it if you ever can’t do it and can’t stop thinking about it?

OCD is never about how much you clean… it’s about the obsessive compulsive nature of the behaviour.

Cleaning a bathroom once every 1-2 week is not fine its grim.

I think you have to ignore these people. Carry on as you are .. ( you could pop round to mine if you have any free time though. Sorry.)

If you clean your basin/ bath and toilet daily it’s fine to do a more thorough clean once a week!

TheRemainsOfTheDayCream · 06/07/2026 19:29

Your family need to educate themselves on what OCD actually is. It's not about being clean and tidy - it's about having a level of obsessive thoughts and compusions so bad that they have a severe impact on your life (bad enough to qualify as a disorder). My adult son has OCD: his room is a mess and he rarely washes. These issues are caused by his OCD and make perfect sense to him.

RegretfulVaper · 06/07/2026 12:54

Yes, it's crap being bombarded with opinions that contradict reality and it's easy to fall into doubting yourself. I hope this thread is reassuring despite some of the hostility.

Thank you this post sums up how I am feeling.

Sounds extremely normal to me!

MeridaBrave · Yesterday 17:19

That’s a totally normal amount of cleaning.
Not OCD.

Iris2020 · Yesterday 17:24

Your cleaning routine is completely normal. I think the question is are you making life super stressful for everyone else living in your house by jumping on them each time they leave a coat lying around or freak out if they have a biscuit on the sofa.

If you're not on their case all the time, then you're fine.

CombatBarbie · Yesterday 17:27

Darragon · 06/07/2026 12:25

This is very unreasonable, OCD is a debilitating MH condition not something to be thrown around about people with clean houses.

The Op has a valid reason as to why she may have OCD, get a grip.

Op your routine sounds very normal!!! Its your family/friends, they are probably embarrassed that their own homes are squalor.

What reason is that, then?

Atleastitsnotsunstroke · Yesterday 17:57

That is a 100% normal level of cleaning and one that I follow more or less as part of my do the bare minimum mindset.

Any less than that, carpets look bad and makes asthma worse.
