Hi all. DH and I have always wanted kids, however due to circumstances (moving, job loss, money issues) we had waited a while. I am 33 and he is 38. The plan is to pay off a 30k debt and then start trying, however DH says he would like to reno the house a bit first (new floors and paint the house).

I have had nexplanon for 10 years and am concerned it may take a while to fall pregnant after being on BC for so long.

What do you think?

I got pregnant at 37 first month of trying after about 18 years on the pill. I’d ensure your finances are sound first but also ensure you’re as healthy as you can be: diet, fitness, healthy weight, to give yourself the best chance when you do try in maybe a couple of years?

Planning on mid next year ttc. We earn decent money now but want to make sure there's not much financial pressure when we try. We dont have any family nearby to help unfortunately

good idea to pay off the debt first but def start trying then. likely it'll take a while anyway, and even if quick you still have 9 months before baby. make sure you can save to cover your mat leave. you don't need to spend much on baby stuff.

Get the debt paid off and then get started. The house can either wait or you can do it at the same time.

I’d get on with it personally - you don’t know what issues you might be facing. I’d try and get the debt much reduced too though.

Honestly anyone who got pregnant in their late 30s got lucky. Really lucky.

If kids are something you want, don’t leave it. Because if you leave it too late, you can’t fix it.

You can always pay off debt. You can always renovate the house.

You can’t always have kids.

Get on with it. Life carries on round about. Don’t wait for goodness sake.

I would question whether your dh actually wants children.

First it is paying off debt, now it is paying off debt and renovating a house.
What next?

New car

Job loss

Wants to qualify in something else

I know everyone says to make sure you are debt free and in good jobs but life has a habit of throwing you curve balls

Go for it. Otherwise there will always be something you need to do before having a baby and even if you pay off the debt you could have missed having a baby the usual way and the debt will be to an ivf clinic instead

76% of women age 36-37 will get pregnant within a year of trying. Even at 40 it's 40-50% success within a year. I absolutely agree op should get on with it, especially if they would like more than one child. But most women can get pregnant in their late 30's.
