Anyone with insomnia bemused at how people are reacting to having to go to work after watching the England match?

I know it’s not the norm for many people, but if you suffer with insomnia, going to work and pushing through the day is something we have to do on an almost daily basis and there is very little sympathy from employers.

Watching breakfast TV people are acting OTT at the one day they didn’t get a full nights rest.

Because its not the 'normal' for them?

Summerhillsquare · 06/07/2026 08:25

I know! I didn't stay up, but I got the results because I wake up at 3am whether I want to or not.

Had ashawanga, magnesium and melatonin as per and still up at 3am.

You body becomes accustomed to lack of sleep over time. It is not good for you but you get used to it.
I worked till 7am for years. I would get home, get the children to school, have a few hours nap, live life before the next shift.
Looking back I don’t know how I managed on 3/4 hours sleep.
I think insomnia would send me over the edge. On the rare occasions when I can’t sleep it drives me bonkers.

I take sleeping pills and I still wake up! Insomnia is the worst. It’s lifelong torture. I often wonder what else I could have done with my life if I had been able to sleep

Oh, and I await the Alzheimer’s which seems to be inevitable

Just because it’s “normal” for some of us to be awake half the night doesn’t make it feel any less awful/hideous day after day after day. Having to work when you feel like death warmed up rinse and repeat day in and day out.

BIossomtoes · 06/07/2026 08:32

Fellow insomniac here. I couldn’t agree more.

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 06/07/2026 08:33

Kind of, but also it's not a competition and its not the 'norm' for them. Its like when we have 35C heat and are complaining and people in Florida are like...we have that ALL THE TIME. Well they might but it doesn't make it any less hot here and we aren't used to it. There is always going to be someone who has it worse than you but that doesn't mean you can't find it hard work

StormGazing · 06/07/2026 08:33

Having limited / broken sleep is awful, after having children then going through peri and having AI issues that don’t help me sleep is really awful, but I don’t recall ever not going to work because the babies meant I only got a few hours sleep / my body clock was being a grinch and I only got sleep til 3am …. Saying that, I wasn’t drinking booze 🤣

It isn’t. My mum could sleep anywhere, any time. My dad was an insomniac. She got dementia and he was sharp as a needle to his last breath at 99. It gives me hope.

Me too. I'm a lifelong insomniac and I'm afraid to say it's actually got worse as I've got older!

Those saying "Your body gets used to it" have no idea when it's because of insomnia (rather than situation-related lack of sufficient sleep). It's like - as another pp has said - TORTURE to be unable to sleep night after night...

God, I HOPE so!

MyThreeWords · 06/07/2026 08:44

Why is is bemusing? Surely if you experience insomnia you know exactly why it is a big deal not getting enough sleep. You also know how you have grindingly adjusted to all the horribleness of it -- so that it is no longer the unfamiliar awfulness of experiencing it as a one-off.

BIossomtoes · 06/07/2026 08:46

So do I. It’s a horrible fear, isn’t it?

SunnyRedSnail · 06/07/2026 08:49

I am bleary eyed from insomnia (couldn't sleep until gone midnight but my brain wakes at 4.30am and won't stay asleep after that) and if one more person asks if I stayed up to watch the footy!!

Strong coffee is just what I need to function!

Staying up to watch footy is self inflicted sleep deprivation!

Agree! I have had insomnia since I was a teenager. When I had a baby my friend told me that it was so much harder for her at night because I was used to being awake and she was used to 8 hours sleep so her life was tougher. Yes, because 20+ years of exhaustion makes waking up to feed a baby ever 1-2 hours a ✨doddle✨

I hate when people tell you that you’re fine because you’re used to it, you NEVER get used to it!

But sleeping pills also have an increased risk of Alzheimer’s so you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t! That story does give hope though, it’s a frightening existence!

Minasama · 06/07/2026 08:55

I think this is a bit odd. If you are making a fuss about going to work after the England match you could always not have watched the England match.
But I don’t think insomnia, while awful, is a relevant comparison really. Sorry OP.

FastFood · 06/07/2026 08:56

What's the point of the thread? People can't feel tired because someone on MN has insomnia?

Try not to worry about it too much. Easier said than done though. I’m hyper vigilant of myself, at 72 every memory lapse scares me. I take Lion’s Mane now and have noticed a definite improvement in my mental acuity.

AfogatoFirenze · 06/07/2026 08:58

Blimey what's this a race to the bottom?!

That’s interesting, where do you get that from?

I’ve wondered about trying to buy melatonin online but again people say it’s dodgy so I don’t know. It’s so hard to know what’s best.

5128gap · 06/07/2026 09:04

In fairness, I think the performative tiredness is all part of the drama of it, isn't it? A bit like when you're young and stay out all night, then compare stories of falling asleep in meetings/the stationary cupboard/the train and ending up the other end of the country.
