Are there a lot of fake posts at the moment?

Is it just my overanalytical brain? So many posts at the moment read like the crap clickbait stories that pop up on Facebook. Is it just because so many people are using AI to write their posts? Some even come across as downright unbelievable.
I can’t tell if I’m being ridiculous or if people are weirdly making posts to get comments. Which seems odd on mumsnet. Or maybe trying to get ideas for their next online novella?!

OP posts:
lightreflectingonwater · Yesterday 07:36

I don't know but I was thinking the same thing

Boomer55 · Yesterday 07:38

Some of these posts seem pretty unlikely. 🤷‍♀️

Izzyink · Yesterday 07:38

Yep, loads of click bait titles that know how to push the MN buttons.

MinnieCoops · Yesterday 07:39

Yeah

SaveOurSnails · Yesterday 07:41

I guess the year 11s aren’t at school right now.
There always seems to be a spike in school holidays

SnowyPetals · Yesterday 07:41

Yep, too many people with too much time on their hands.

FirstdatesFred · Yesterday 07:41

I don’t know if it’s worse than before? There have always been so many fake and made up ones.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · Yesterday 07:42

To be fair, people learn from what they experience. We are all exposed multiple times a day to the annoying clickbait style. It’s inevitable it rubs off on us and we start to use it ourselves.

What I notice more, is how long threads hang around now. Either I’m spending much longer on her (perfectly possible) or there are fewer threads.

daisychain01 · Yesterday 07:45

Just wait until next week when everyone is grumpy and it with the heatwave.

there are few made up stories that last for 3 threads, and more instant rage inducers.

come off social media like Facebook, it's bad

shuddacuddadidnt · Yesterday 07:54

All the 'boomer' threads?

TreesOfGreen99 · Yesterday 07:55

It’s the increasing number of long opening posts that I’m noticing.
Just get to the point and do it succinctly!
I feel some of these posters are just looking for an audience, not a discussion or an honest answer. They just want to be the star in their own drama.

thelongesday · Yesterday 07:56

How could anyone possibly know for sure? There has been talk about fake posts for as long as I can remember with it almost becoming a sport to 'spot' them by some people - who would then award themselves a chufty badge. They recently moved on to spotting AI generated posts to get their kicks.

It's all so tedious to me, if you think a thread is fake then don't reply on it. MN to me is like the tv - it might not all be real but sometimes it's probably more interesting/funny when it's not. It's an anonymous internet forum, no one should be getting that emotionally invested that they can't cope with the fact that they might sometimes be replying to things that aren't entirely true.

LuckyHazelFox · Yesterday 07:56

Yes and problem is you can't properly call them out on it. Boomer and GB News threads.

youalright · Yesterday 07:59

Yep a mix off bored people, kids, newspapers and mumsnet themselves to increase traffic

ThonsDesperate · Yesterday 08:00

Yes, I’ve definitely noticed loads of posts that are very obviously created to start a bun fight. If a question or scenario sounds a bit goady, even though the subject matter interests me, I don’t comment if the poster hasn’t been back within an hour or two. I know that on the rare occasion I have started a thread, I’ve been keen to read the responses and engage with them and assume most people with genuine motives are the same. I’m completely useless at spotting AI though.

PermanentTemporary · Yesterday 08:00

Yes.

I’m Spartacus [fake]

JavierBardemswife · Yesterday 08:03

I agree- lots of ridiculous scenarios that are quite Jeremy Kyle/ Take a break with lots of drip feeds and as soon as people start questioning the validity they are miraculously and suddenly sorted out whilst the thread is still going. Riiight.

HoskinsChoice · Yesterday 08:03

Mumsnet is a commercial venture which relies on us posting and clicking on their links. Mumsnet writes goady posts to encourage us to respond which earns them money. I'm sure some of the goady threads are written by oddballs who think they're funny or get some kind of adrenaline rush out of getting responses to their threads but most will be written by Mumsnet employees.

6ate9 · Yesterday 08:04

I NEVER take any post or posters too seriously. We are all anonymous so have no idea who’s fake or not!!!!

HelpMeGetThrough · Yesterday 08:08

It’ll be MN throwing them up there, traffic makes the business money. If they are looking to flog the business, they’ve got to make it as financially attractive as possible.

coronafiona · Yesterday 08:08

Also a lot of AI

Izzyink · Yesterday 08:10

There's one at the minute with everyone frothing away. Can't call it out though.

My social housing benefit dependent neighbours need to be kicked out and put in a workhouse. AIBU?

You can. Troll-hunting is banned but there is nothing stopping you calling OP out on their bullshit.

That would be classed as troll hunting though. And as the thread is on one of MN favouite subjects I'd be reported and deleted in a flash.
