AIBU to feel slightly ripped off?

Today I had a gardener come round to sort out my garden. He had priced up the job beforehand; £300 - £325 which included all the weeding, grass cutting, trimming some stuff down (including brambles). It was also supposed to include the dismantling and taking away of our old trampoline. The garden was very overgrown.
He did the job today … in just over two hours!!! I completely understand the reasoning behind not charging by the hour, as it wouldn’t be worth his while. But that’s a lot for just over two hours’ work.
I am happy with the job, though the finish could have been a little neater. There were a few cuttings etc to be picked up. He left all the bramble cuttings as he said that wasn’t included in the cost. I do understand that brambles are harder work and not part of general maintenance.
But the stinger was that he didn’t take the trampoline down. He said that the screws were rusted and an unusual shape. He didn’t have the right drill for it. He discounted the price by £25, so I paid £300, which was the lower end of his quote anyway.
As I said, I’m happy with the job overall. I was out at my second job while he did my garden, and I have no doubt that he worked like a Trojan for the entire time. He also has some top notch equipment to help him out.
Maybe I shouldn’t feel bothered about it, as the job was completed to my satisfaction. But it’s a lot of money when you break it down and I can’t believe I’m still not shot of the old trampoline (would have given it away but it’s no longer fit for purpose). It’s also less than ideal to have to get rid of the bramble cuttings on my own.

You paid an amount you were happy with for a set amount of work, the time taken is irrelevant.

LetterBetter · 04/07/2026 16:08

I'd not be happy at all - especially as he didn't clear the brambles fully or even take the trampoline!

kissthefish · 04/07/2026 16:08

You’re right. I just assumed it would take the best part of a day, but that’s on me!

How long it takes is his business after you've agreed a price for a job, it makes no difference to you.

My handyman sometimes brings his nephew or his brother to get the job done in half the time.

Again, not my business.

jackstini · 04/07/2026 16:13

Why did you only pay him £25 less when a massive part of the job was not completed?!

I would have paid partial and told him to come back with the right tools and I would pay the balance of the money when the balance of the work was complete

By the hour doesn’t come into it as long as he completes the job - but he didn’t!

PizzaPunk · 04/07/2026 16:19

Another thing my handyman does (as does my brother who is a gardener) is he itemises and prices each individual job in a text, which I then agree on.

If you use him again, ask him to do this and then you would've known exactly how much he was quoting for the trampoline.

SleepingisanArt · 04/07/2026 16:24

Apart from the bramble cuttings did he take away all the rubbish? Here gardeners are expensive for essentially clearance work (one off rather than ongoing maintenance) because they have to pay expensive tip fees.

plover26 · 04/07/2026 16:26

To have got all that work done in the allotted time he probably needed heavy duty equipment which comes at a cost to buy, maintain etc.

I’d be annoyed the brambles were left (did he say it wasn’t included beforehand?) and £25 discount for the trampoline seems a bit soft - maybe £50-75 as it was likely an hour’s work on its own.

SideboobToYouToo · 04/07/2026 16:27

You were ripped off.

kissthefish · 04/07/2026 16:30

Thanks everyone - appreciate your thoughts.

I agree - you were ripped off!

He did half the job and charged you for pretty much all of it

PersephoneParlormaid · 04/07/2026 16:33

I agree. You knew he wasn’t taking the brambles, but I think he should have taken off more for the trampoline. I’d be naffed off about that.

TheClocksFast · 04/07/2026 16:35

Nah, I wouldn’t be happy with that at all! I paid £800 for THREE guys to work 7 hours in my garden recently and they did an excellent (and very cheap job).

For £300 I’d assume he’d be at it all or most of the day and do the FULL job, as agreed. Sounds like he zoomed through it, cutting corners and not bothering with anything that wasn’t quick and easy. Had crappy workmen like this before.

Lindy2 · 04/07/2026 16:43

Why couldn't he take the brambles? If he cut them down then he takes them away too. Yes they're sharp. He would need to wear gloves and use a heavy duty bag. For £300 they absolutely should have been disposed of too.

If he couldn't take the trampoline down then you needed a much bigger discount. It generally takes a couple of hours to dismantle a trampoline. On that basis you needed a 50% discount.

I'm afraid you have been overcharged. At least he did some of what you asked him to though but I'd not use him again and if he has a page where you can leave reviews you might want to warn others that he doesn't always complete the job.

Tollington · 04/07/2026 16:59

Paying only £25 less than the maximum quoted price and him not taking the trampoline down AND away is not enough of a deduction.

I would say he should have been paid £200 for the job. That’s £100 an hour for some basic manual labour that pretty much anybody that is fit, healthy and mobile could have done. Still sounds like a hell of a lot of money to me but I don’t know what the going price is.

TwinklySquid · 04/07/2026 18:57

I don’t understand why people get annoyed if something takes less time than they thought. I’d be very pleased if I paid and something was done quicker.

I agree, unless the quote is done by he day or by the hour. But it sounds like this gardener didn't actually finish the job at all. He left the trampoline in tact and the brambles were not taken away either

catslovehairties · 04/07/2026 19:07

If he'd quoted by the hour, he could have taken his sweet time and charged you even more.

hahabahbag · 04/07/2026 19:09

I always ask for an hourly rate for this very reason, once bitten…

OriginalUsername2 · 04/07/2026 19:09

I couldn’t do all that in 2 hours. Maybe you're paying for his experience, energy and talent? Maybe his tools and insurance too.

Except if you ask for an hourly rate, they can take as long as they like and charge you accordingly.

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 04/07/2026 19:19

Bloody hell! Making out it's £25 value to dismantle and remove a trampoline is not ok! If he saw the job beforehand he should come back and finish with the right tools. I had two guys do weeding, fix some bricks in a wall back into place and fix some paved steps for over 6 hours for £385!

mondaytosunday · 04/07/2026 19:21

Yea I’d be mad about the trampoline- I think that warrants more than £25 off!

Delphiniumandlupins · 04/07/2026 22:55

Did he take any of the waste away? I would always want that included in a gardening quote, or clearly stated if it's not included. I think you were ripped off. Not for the time spent on the job but because he would charge a lot more than £25 to dismantle and remove trampoline!

ForDreamyMintHare · 04/07/2026 23:00

Trampoline is a massive job.why on earth did you pay 300?
