AIBU to ask you to make me feel better about this absolute howler of an interview? Or should I just leave the country?

So I had an interview today and it was over Teams in front of a panel of 3. I prepared well, and was sat in my home office at my desk on my new office chair

Anyway, before the interview, I’d been fiddling with the height adjustment of the chair as it wasn’t quite high enough for me. Finally got it sorted and all good.

so, I’m sat there and half way through an in-depth answer to a multi pronged question. I’m all animated and talking away when I suddenly feel myself descending but ever so slowly. I kind of stutter a bit as I’m SO distracted by this and I try to hold myself up by gripping my desk but it’s no use …. Literally, one moment I’m in their line of sight and then next, i gradually disappear from view as my hydraulic chair takes me all the way down as low as it will go.

I end up inches from my floor, desperately trying to scrabble myself back up and then I sort of PING back into view like a jack in a box to find one of the women on the panel literally helpless with laughter.

I just can’t. So mortified. Please tell me you’ve had worse?

I think it's a definite positive. You kept going, you styled it out and you were hilarious.

This really cheered me up. I bet they felt the same about you. I'd definitely give you the job.

RealityChecksNeeded · 03/07/2026 21:53

Oh OP, I've had a crap week, truly crap and I've just sat down with a cup of coffee for a mindless scroll and your post has made me howl with laughter!!!! The part where you're gripping your desk to slow the descent 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I truly hope you get the job and thank you, you genuinely have lifted my spirits tonight ❤️

nocoolnamesleft · 03/07/2026 21:55

I really needed that laugh. Thank you so much.

Philandbill · 03/07/2026 21:58

I'm sorry OP but that's so funny. DH and DD now also laughing.

TattyOldOwl · 03/07/2026 21:05

It was the penultimate question but I didn’t style it out tbh. I shrieked and started laughing and then saying ‘ Jesus bloody Christ’ … and then we continued but the air of professionalism I’d had was gone I feel

oh and the job? Think serious law type role.

Even better!!!! My crappy week has been due to Court hearings, unreasonable conduct from the opposition legal rep, an out of touch judge who really does not have a clue, having to inform a vulnerable woman that despite all she's suffered at the hands of her psychotic ex, the law won't protect her and he's now got access to her child, it's been a shit show!!!

Our sector definitely needs more laughs, hope you and your chair join soon! (Might even be my firm, we're interviewing for multiple roles at the moment)

😁

Love this, properly laughed out loud. I think you’ll be fine, shows you can deal with curveballs with good humour and carry on. Let us know how it goes!

Catsfredwilma · 03/07/2026 22:01

My friend was interviewed by several people in a board room, as she left she walked towards the door and then turned round to say her final goodbye, so kind of walked out the door backwards and
closed it.
That’s when she realised she was in the stationery cupboard!
So she had to come out of the cupboard, say goodbye again with as much dignity as she could and then leave from the other door.
She did get the job though :)

TattyOldOwl · 03/07/2026 22:04

@RealityChecksNeeded well…. If it starts with a C and ends in an S and has a P in the middle … then yes. It is 😂

I’m already in so this is a side move to another department

well , it WAS a side move . The jury is out on that one after me making a colossal tit of myself.

I keep going hot and cold when I think about how it felt when it dawned on me I was moving. Downwards: and verrrryy slowly at that.

I rarely laugh out loud at something I'm reading but this is hilarious. Thanks for sharing.

mechanicalpencil · 03/07/2026 22:09

I hope you get the job!!!

TattyOldOwl · 03/07/2026 22:10

@Thepossibility I’m qualified. As a prize dickhead.

Let’s hope they have a sense of humour!!!

I interviewed someone once on teams and she was sat in her lounge with a clothes airer behind her and her partner walked behind her, dropped his towel and grabbed some boxes! If it had been me I’d have flicked my camera off but she just kept going with the conversation!! She was the best candidate for the job and we still chuckle about it 😂

FlamingoQueen · 03/07/2026 22:13

I’m here to see if you get the job! I can picture you just disappearing from their view - brilliant!

AppropriateAdult · 03/07/2026 22:15

That’s a brilliant story, OP. I feel very confident you’ll get the job.

A relative of mine was interviewing for a new PA. One candidate came in, shook hands with the panel and sat down across the table. As she crossed her legs, one shoe flew off and landed under the middle of the table. Everyone pretended not to notice as she spent the first five minutes of the interview frantically - but subtly - reaching for the errant shoe with her foot and trying to slip it back in without anyone noticing.

We need more posts like this please !!!!!

WhatcakeshalIbaketoday · 03/07/2026 22:25

Yes it’s very Miranda. That is so funny OP, they must give you the job now. 😂😂

SaySomethingMan · 03/07/2026 22:27

So sorry. But this has me howling under the covers. Nothing to add, but thanks for the giggle. Let us in know if you got the job!!

nomoremsniceperson · 03/07/2026 22:32

OP, the visual of that was just chef's kiss. Thank you for sharing 😆

I did have a much lower-stakes bad experience during a job interview in my early twenties... fresh out of uni and struggling to find a job, I went for a group interview at a telemarketing company. The room was warm and windowless and the presentation was hypnotic and soothing, and I felt myself unable to stop dropping off to sleep, with the presenter/interviewer looking directly at me nearly the whole time. His icy stare helped jerk me awake for a while until I finally succumbed and more or less lost consciousness. I can only hope I didn't snore. I woke up to the sound of other interviewees filing out, tried to remember where I was, and shuffled out looking somewhat disorientated.

I got the job anyway, it was telemarketing, literally nobody wants to do that shit

VivX · 03/07/2026 22:39

I wish more job interviews were like this!
(I hope you get the job)

PhoenixReincarnated · 03/07/2026 22:47

Sorry OP but I was crying laughing reading that 😂😂

They'll definitely remember you. I hope you get the job.
