Ovarian cyst stories please. Have you had one? what kind was it? Did it go away on its own? did it rupture? if so after how long? Did you have surgery? Info please :)

Had them every month for 30 years - up to 27 a month that grew and then burst. Couldn’t leave the house for days due to the pain and amount of fluid and blood I lost. A single cyst unless there are complications which is rare will just burst on its own which is painful yes but lots of us have very painful periods and endometriosis as well🤷‍♀️ a low dose of progesterone manages them and makes them go down too

Hiya,
I had a large ovarian cyst identified in a scan relating to another medical issue and was referred for an urgent gynae appointment. It ruptured before I got to see anyone about it, it was very painful and became infected, I ended up hospitalised for a week and having emergency surgery. I don’t think my experience is common however! Probably just about the worst case possible scenario?!

Fundraiser12345 · 02/07/2026 18:10

they found a big dermoid cyst on my ovary when i went for first scan when I was pregnant, it didn’t cause me too many issues however did cause more pain during periods. I had mine removed a year after birth - the op was absolutely fine as was the recovery. Home the same day and an easy pretty painless recovery, They said it had likely been there since I was a baby.

SooPanda · 02/07/2026 18:11

I had 2, approx 2cm in size each. 3 months later they had gone by themselves. Hope that helps x

I’m post-menopausal and have private health insurance - both relevant here.

Following some pain in my lower right side I had a scan, which showed I had an ovarian cyst. It was many times bigger than my ovary (no eggs left, I assume) but the very well regarded private gynaecologist said it was fine to leave it as it was, he wasn’t concerned.

I went ahead anyway and had it removed, along with the other ovary and my fallopian tubes, keyhole surgery. I don’t know if it was necessary. Probably not, just reassuring.

LuckyHazelFox · 02/07/2026 18:22

Was diagnosed with a "simple" ovarian cyst not so long ago, after menopausal bleeding. I've just been advised to look out for further bleeds but no further action needed on the cyst.

Rookie93 · 02/07/2026 18:26

Had a large ovarian cyst when I was in my 20's. Had it removed along with the ovary and fallopian tube. Was in for about a 5 days after surgery and took about 12 wks to recover & get back to work.

walkingmyway · 02/07/2026 18:29

Yes, had 6 of them, 3 on each ovary
chocolate cysts, removed as part of my surgery for deep infiltrating endometriosis

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/07/2026 18:33

I have chocolate cysts which is endometriosis presenting as ovarian cysts. Got pregnant with one there but aster years of trying. Had it removed eventually and it was about 6cm. And a smaller one. Couple of years later had a 9cm one removed that was partially adhered to my bowel and lost my tube.

Meadowfinch · 02/07/2026 18:40

I had an ovarian dermoid, which is very nasty kind of cyst including all sorts of tissue types. My idiot gp said I was looking for attention and refused to check it, for months, while the pain escalated.

That turned into a 3am emergency admission, when it got too big and twisted, and I developed an abdo infection, sores all up my back, passed out in a&e triage, had a massive fever and was in agony.

They finally did a scan and I was operated on in the early morning. I lost an ovary & tube at the same time. Then a week in women's surgical and 6 weeks off sick. The relief was blissful. 😍

Thankfully GPs that useless are rare.

sorry meant to add they were “simple” cysts (fluid filled).

I've had 2 dermoid cysts on my ovaries, they found the first when I had a scan to diagnose PCOS when I was 16, this was about 6 inches in diameter. I had regular ultrasounds to see if it shrunk but it never did so I had this out a year later by laparoscopy.
Recovery was fine, back to normal after a couple of weeks.
I had abdominal and back pain with the second one a few years later, this was one was larger at 10 inches diameter in the same ovary.
I had that one out very quick, again by laparoscopy, they went through my old scars so that helped.
My daughter also suffers from them and also has PCOS, but hers seems to grow then shrink.

DuringDinnerMints · 02/07/2026 20:25

Had one that burst. Worst pain of my life, akin to childbirth. The pain lasted a few hours then went away. Not much the doctors could do and no further treatment needed.

drunkelephant83 · 02/07/2026 20:28

I had one nearly 5CM went back for a rescan 6 weeks later and it had gone.

I remember being at the gym and felt this god awful pain and tingling going across my whole right side, I’m sure it was then it burst!

SuperSugarHigh · 02/07/2026 20:31

Very similar to other posters. Chocolate cysts related to stage 4 endometriosis, one removed successfully, the other still in there due to being adhered to my bowel. Currently on the waiting list for more complex surgery to remove that one. Before surgery I had a lot of abdominal/back pain. The bigger one partially ruptured before surgery - so painful.

Keyhole surgery, back at work (from home) a few days later. Still have issues with the belly button incision though, months down the line and it’s still weeping and has some ugly overgranulation.

Settle in!
ok, so one was found last year, at 9cms it was operated on via VNotes last month.

Unfortunately at some point in recovery I picked up a nasty infection and my ovary grew another (hemmoregic sp.?) cyst measuring 11cm following surgery. They went back in this week, to remove cyst and ovary but both were too gummed up with infection to remove without damaging the bowel, so am now back in hospital hooked up to IVs and feeling very sorry for myself.

Hope your situation is more positive and less woe free

Whowhatwhere21 · 02/07/2026 20:54

I've had them on an off for years, they usually leave when I have a period. I have currently got 3 on my right ovary. One is 12cm and has been there since 2022 just gradually getting bigger. The other two appeared between July and September last year, they are now roughly 4cm each.
I've been told I'm high risk of rupture or torsion and in November was In hospital for 6 days because of them supposedly needing an urgent operation, however I was sent home about 8 hours after being told that. Currently, nobody gives a toss and I'm having no monitoring on them either.

Yellowpapersun · 02/07/2026 20:58

I had a 6cm one, found by accident when I had a scan looking for a lost Mirena coil. The horrible ultrasound technician scared the life out of me, telling me it had features of malignancy. I was referred to a gynaecologist who specialised in gynaecologic cancer and he agreed but said there was only a small risk of cancer because my CA125 was normal. He said we could wait and see, but I wanted it gone ASAP! I ended up having a total hysterectomy due to also having a huge uterine fibroid. The cyst was actually a mixture of a solid Brenner tumour (benign) and a mucinous cyst.

I have a chocolate cyst, only around 3.5cm but I’m in pain every single day from it. Surgery is too risky for me for other reasons so going to try the coil to see if that helps (apparently the coil can reduce endometriosis symptoms).

Twattergy · 02/07/2026 21:18

Yes big endometrial cyst on one ovary aged c 33. Removed via surgery (keyhole) and luckily they didnt need to take out the ovary itself. Got pregnant within a year of that.
