To think Reddit is more toxic than other forums?

My mam has a YouTube channel, so she's used to getting the odd negative comment. Recently she started asking for advice on Reddit, and she's genuinely surprised by how some people reply.

She's not someone who's easily offended or emotional. She's dealt with plenty of criticism over the years however she can't get over how normal it seems for people to be rude for no reason. Last week I heard her mumbling that this site is "f*cking rude" which surprised me as she rarely swears.

I find it surprising how a seemingly left-leaning website has so many toxic and judgmental people.

I’ve read the British based subs, about being British, and honestly it’s a Gen Z woke echo chamber. Pile after pile of repetetive tosh. Not representative of Britain as a whole, very far from it.

Reddit can be a cesspit of people and ideas.

But then so can MN on groups like AIBU.

Some groups just lend themselves to antagonistic responses - especially AITA/AIBU where you're literally inviting opposing views, and then have the OP arguing with everyone that answers in the affirmative.

And both sites, and others, can be great places for information and help.

Just steer clear of X/twitter. 240 characters is enough to insult people, and few people pay to write decent length replies.

I've found reddit quite moderate! I've posted a few comments where I disagree with someone, expecting it to kick off, but it just ends up in respectful acknowledgement that we have different views/opinions/tastes whatever. I've been pleasantly surprised. Maybe because it's laid out in thread format rather than one continual stream, it's more of a convo.

I've always found Reddit to be relatively strictly moderated.
What subreddits is she using, to ask for advice?

I guess the scandal re all the pro rape subs passed you by then? Many of them are still there, including peodaphilla based ones.

Depends on the sub. I belong to a great one about crocs and alligators as I like them.

There's a lot of great Bluey chat. I guess it depends what you're looking for

I can't say I ever sought that sort of content out

Those are literally subs where the intention is to ask for an unfiltered opinion from millions of strangers. They’re not going be full of nice people saying polite things.

What do you mean?

Surely it's fairly clear?

I find reddit a bit of a mixed bag. I don't have an account on there anymore as I was finding all the upvoting etc a bit addictive!

The main thing that reddit has going for it that mumsnet does not is that you can block other users on there (I think?).

I follow a content creator who gets a LOT of stick on tattle life, and that is actually the worst one I have seen, personally. I have no idea why they hate this woman who has done absolutely nothing to them. It is actually a little concerning.

Mumsnet can be bloody awful too though. You have to learn to tune out the real, nasty bastards on here. Some people are on here just to be as horrible as possible. Most people are not like that but they definitely exist on here.

JoyousOpalLemur · 04/07/2026 16:14

Am flabbergasted some people didn't realise Reddit is left leaning.

Try posting anything on there even slightly right of centre and your account will be temporarily suspended.

Try saying something like 'men are not women' and your account will be immediately nuked.

/r/AITA, /r/amiwrong and similar subs.

Those subs are the equivalent of AIBU and completely unrepresentative.

In general Reddit is one of the most supportive communities out there.

Is Reddit "left leaning"? I never knew.

It absolutely is

Locutus2000 · 04/07/2026 17:14

UniquePinkSwan · 04/07/2026 17:13

It absolutely is

There are thousands of subreddits, some left leaning, some the opposite.

Izzyink · 04/07/2026 17:16

There are 1000s of subs on Reddit. Some are toxic.some are very funny.
I tend to stick to the funny ones, the cat ones and the left leaning ones.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 04/07/2026 17:18

The thing with Reddit is that most subs are moderated by different people and they can all set their own rules (within Reddit guidelines). So some are strict, some are lax.

The subs i go on are all fine. Get her to try different subs. Read a bit first, it’s easy to get the vibe.

FannyCraddocksPantry · 04/07/2026 17:21

cromenockle · 02/07/2026 15:47

I think it depends on the sub. The legal advice one is great, for example.

There is a running joke on uklaw (where lawyers go) about just how poor the advice on legaladviceuk is (where wannabe lawyers go)

Izzyink · 04/07/2026 17:23

Ah but legalcatadvice is usually spot on. Especially if you can speak cat.

Upvoting is good, it means if someone hasn’t bothered to read the OP they get downvoted, and if someone is insightful they get upvoted, which means you don’t have to bother ploughing through everyone repeating themselves to find the good replies.

The main thing that reddit has going for it that mumsnet does not is that you can block other users on there (I think?).
Yes, it’s a two way thing so once you block them neither of you can see the other.

Mumsnet can be bloody awful too though. You have to learn to tune out the real, nasty bastards on here. Some people are on here just to be as horrible as possible. Most people are not like that but they definitely exist on here.
Agree. Hard, hard agree.

Does she use MNs?!
