to think it's ok that I can't do a single pull up?!?

I took a friend rock climbing yesterday. Turns out that years of trapeze work make you very strong, and ideally set up for rock climbing. She had a great time, and I'm happy to know I've probably got a new climbing partner.

But she was a bit that I can't do a single pull up. She does them one-handed!

i've climbed with plenty of 50-something year old men who were definitely not reed slim anymore or could do a pull up but who could climb circles round men half their age.

they'd been doing it for years and years and just had the knack.

did anyone see those two chaps on St. Kilda climbing on the BBC show yesterday?

now that was some hard ass trad and they were making it look easy - that's decades of experience for you.

no one?! these two dudes were hardcore!

they got permission to climb on St. Kilda from the National Trust for the film, OMDB. one of them is one of those old-time British climbing lessons, now in his 50s.

whoa, could he move!

they filmed mostly his second, who was himself very experienced and he was having to pull all these awkward moves and the rock was far from quality. the leader had had to place pro in some awkward stances.

damn, it was impressive.

have to agree though that experience is often much more of an advantage than sheer strength when it comes to climbing.

Also, the best way to build up arm strength is to climb. A pull up isnt necessarily using the musles you'd use when climbing.

My forearms and fingers are used more than my biceps, especially on the more technical climbs with smaller holds.

OverMyDeadBody · 28/06/2008 20:31

I might search for it on youtube then!
