To block GBNews from my parent’s TV?

My parents retired 4 years ago. They’re both in their 60s, healthy, happy, comfortable financially.

Since they’ve retired they have been sucked in by every single thing they say on there. They can spend an entire day sat in front of the TV getting angrier and angrier. It’s to the point that if Starmer comes on the TV, they shout about how he should be killed.

it’s genuinely starting to concern me. You can’t have a rational conversation with them about anything. I miss my parents, how they used to be before all the conspiracy and anger took over.

I’m genuinely tempted to block it from their tv using parental controls and just pretending it’s some weird fault in their telly. They’d not be able to fix it.

Yes ik that. Why do you think more won’t see it as a good way to do the same? If I wanted to leave South America, Spain looks like a good bet.

Spain has always received SA citizens due to its colonial history. It's not a new thing and nothing to do with the current amnesty or any previous amnesties. These don't happen with set dates, you can't plan for one and you don't know when the next one will be - given the reaction to this one it may never happen again. Many make the move knowing they'll be illegal and accepting the restrictions placed upon them by that. Hoping there may or many not be another amnesty at some unspecified future point isn't going to make the slightest bit of difference to them.

Of those here I know who have applied for the amnesty (British have done too, btw), they had no idea it was coming and it wouldn't have changed the reasons they moved anyway. Of these the most recent arrival was 3.5 years ago. He has been living and working here the whole time. he gets healthcare through a charity. He will continue in the same house and same job but is pleased he can pay taxes and receive the attendant services and benefits that come with that and no longer has to be scared of running into the police. He can also now visit his family.

But again, this is not the topic of the thread. If you're really interested then maybe start a new thread on it.

My memory of it is not remotely vague. The way the situation was reported was factually incorrect. I'm an interpreter. It is my job to help people with things like this so it is a situation I understand pretty well.

It was weeks ago and you have no idea when you heard it and you only have your memory of it and no evidence so forgive me for not being convinced.

Do you have any other evidence of the ‘outright lies’ apparently so prevalent on GB News?

I’m going to call it and say that PPs claiming that GB News doesn’t report accurately are just parroting what they’ve heard from their opponents rather than actually seeing it for themselves.

If anything, given the enthusiasm for the authoritarian left to constantly submit complaints to try and shut down channels like GBN for reporting uncomfortable truths, they are actually held to far higher account than say, the BBC who seems to happily spread all sorts of lies and misinformation.

FullLondonEye · 03/07/2026 16:19

😂OK.

I'm not left btw. I lean right but with a background in live news I am fully aware the reality of GBNews.

And then someone will go to the ECHR and demand their right to family life (article 8?) and their family will also gain residency rights. Remembering that these are people who entered illegally or are residing illegally in a country not their own.

And I can’t imagine how Spain think they are going to supersede European law on freedom of movement. Isn’t that an important element of Europe and why other EU countries are upset?

In fact I’m sure many cases like that have already set the precedent so it might not even need a court case.

Cool. So what lies have you spotted that would make them worse than say, the BBC?

Everyone seems so sure they are not reporting accurately but have produced zero evidence. I’ve only seen their women’s rights reporting which has been pretty good against strong resistance as the authoritarian left would prefer them silenced on that and other matters.

It's residency, not citizenship. Do you not understand the difference? To compare, British (so non-EU) citizens also do not gain extra FOM anywhere else when they obtain Spanish residency.

I haven't said anything about them spouting lies. Someone asked for an example of untruthful reporting on their part. I gave one. That's it. Among my issues with GBN, professionally speaking, are their crappy sets and being dated technically. Don't make me part of your agenda.

You keep claiming that having well founded concerns and wanting open conversations about the impacts of large scale immigration on our country is ‘radicalised’ but I think you are the one taking the radical position.

You are proving that you have no argument to defend your position by your increasing use of insults.

immigration is a net postive economically and the statistics show lower crime rates caused by immigrants

Its pedagogues pedalling lies stoking up your prejudices that are causing you to use "well founded" type language on this.

we have an aging population o entitled boomers who demand their triple locked pensions despite paying pittance in tax, while destroying young people with lack of services and killing them with student debts

but you know keep hating on the small boats

Grammarnut · 03/07/2026 17:44

I am amazed nearly 50% of people on here think it is acceptable to stop adults watching what they want - it's not porn after all (I might have some sympathy with blocking that, but then I would like all porn banned and the fines for producing this dehumanising stuff being so astronomical no-one could afford to make the filth). GBNews is perfectly respectable stuff and in some cases carries stories Sky and the BBC won't carry because they knock the establishment view. I don't treat what GBNews produces as news, btw.

WrongKindOfFeminist · 03/07/2026 17:45

Does anyone else think 'boomer' is increasingly used as a term of abuse?

ThatJadeLion · 03/07/2026 17:46

Can't believe this is true. Yes YABUU.

Your pedagogues are stoking up resentment about older people, I think. Maybe best to examine your prejudice.

'killing them with student debts' - holy hyperbole.

@Grammarnut I miss my relative being kind , funny and confident. She is now nasty, racist and paranoid. She won’t go out because GB News says Muslims with guns are coming over on boats and are staging a mass invasion.
She’s forgotten the Muslim doctor who saved her life. We had to cancel a holiday recently because it was by the sea and the Muslims would have got her.

Lots of boomers are still working and/or not getting a triple locked pension yet. Your post is full of ageist shite.

there are some yes, but boomers are by far the richest generation. The next generation are not going to be nearly as rich, mostly down to the political choices of the boomers.

Stop with your flouncing and come back with data, how much richer are boomers from the next generation. They got free education, free healthcare, insane property increases but still go on about how hard done by they are.

But yeah, just accuse me of ageism, good work, its almost as if you had a show on gb news with that level of analysis.

Flouncing? I am not going anywhere. I am having far too much fun watching you digging yourself into a deeper hole with your stereotyping.

Keep up with the ad hominem, care to engage with the subject matter? What did I get wrong?

Cue vague 'all of it'

You need to find another reason for your relative's cognitive decline. It's nothing to do with GB News.

The subject matter is OP's concerns about her parents. If you want you get into the subject of boomer bashing intergenerational inequality, start a thread instead of derailing this one.

Treetreetreetree · 03/07/2026 20:23

@SummerHasArrivedatLast No. She has no other issues. It’s just this.
You don’t believe it because you haven’t experienced it. She has no cognitive issues.
Sorry to disappoint you. GB News is aimed at scaring people and it’s scared her.

Treetreetreetree · 03/07/2026 20:25

@Grammarnut No. If you can get her away from the TV she’s fine.
It’s odd you’re denying this. If you have no experience of it then why comment?
