AIBU to object to an older child sitting directly in a food trolley?

Local m&s food hall. An older lady (presumably) grandma - is wheeling around one of the small size metal shopping trolleys. Inside it is a girl about 8 cross-legged (she takes up most of the space obvs) wearing a pair of crocs. The soles of which are filthy (as indeed would be mine). Chatting away and delighted with herself. It was lovely she was enjoying being with her granny. No signs of disability (later saw them in car park).

As they stood beside me I did say “that looks like fun but you do know people put their food in there and you’ve got your shoes in it”. Grandma tutted and said “forget about it” in a slight non-sequitur . But it’s gross right. This was not a baby / toddler seat trolley. Nor was the child any younger than 7 max …

I hate seeing kids in trolleys, but for safety reasons. An 8 year old climbing in and out of a shallow trolley seems dangerous so the grandma is stupid for allowing it and would be the first crying if the child got injured (and probably trying to claim compensation).

that said, maybe trolleys could be designed to have a little seat for older kids on them. A bit like a buggy board I’m thinking!

60degreecycle · 02/07/2026 07:49

Whatever you do don't start thinking about the places the food has been before it hits the shelves. The trolley is the least of your problems.

SparrowFeet · 02/07/2026 07:49

Congratulations, that grandma is probably going to think about what you said for days and maybe on and off for a long time. Why did you feel the need to ruin someone's day like that?

JuliaRobHurts · 02/07/2026 07:50

Imagine being that much of an arse you try and spoil a nice experience between a gran and her DGD. The only people affected are the gran and DGD depending on how many items they plan to buy. Sounds like you're jealous and desperate for any kind of attention. How sad.

I'm never particularly worried about the hygiene side of things. Probably very different for an M&S trolley as they're indoors I think but most trolleys are outside and filthy anyway. As a student, I used to work in a supermarket overnight and the foxes and rats were always amongst the trolleys.

What does worry me is what happens when a trolley tips up with a child in it. I've seen it happen once and it was catastrophic. Supermarket floors are not forgiving and especially in the smaller trolleys, you're falling from a height.

I’ve seen a child fall from a trollry onto the hard floor, so ya a sound rounding digits also. Seen injuries from the putting their hands wrought the wired sides and getting them crushed. In an evacuation it causes a delay as they have to clamber out. It’s just a really stupid thing to do.

This happened in a supermarket near me when I was little. The child died.

I hate to see kids in trollies at the supermarket.

A child over 1 can stand and climb on the set with much more ease than a trolley would tip from a child sat in the main compartment.

Anyone who has ever put an active toddler into the trolley seat regularly would attest to the same.

2differenttypesofpeople · 02/07/2026 07:53

He doesn't sit in them anymore as he's too heavy for me to push now 😅 but my DS used to sit in trolleys whilst we were out. He doesn't look disabled at all, but he is. He has dyspraxia, hypermobility and EDS plus a visual processing disorder. You cant tell by looking at him.

I'd of really embarrassed you in front of everyone if you'd of said somthing to me.

Corryvreckan · 02/07/2026 07:56

I totally agree and wish more people would speak up about unacceptable behaviour.
I think shops need to stop this.
Some parents and grandparents seem to believe that the world only exists for their little darling.

Frostynoman · 02/07/2026 07:56

You cannot accurately age her (we all know kids smaller than their age and kids bigger than their age) and you certainly cannot declare no disability based on seeing them in the car park!! It was the latter point that made me think that you are being utterly ridiculous. Sidling up to Granny to be snide just was not nice of you. If it were that much of an issue to you then you could have spoken with staff to ask them the intervene and I imagine that they would have done it in a straight, calm manner instead of your passive aggressive way.

Alltheparmesanplease · 02/07/2026 07:57

You have no idea whether or not that child had a disability, despite them showing 'no signs'. You need to mind your own business. I would have had a less than pleasant response for you if I had been the lady.

Poppingby · 02/07/2026 07:57

Well, you just took the shine off their nice shopping trip together and achieved - what? Next time the dirt off her crocs might not add to the pigeon shit and rat hair already in the trolley I suppose. I actually just think people would be a lot happier if they stopped meddling with other people's business and just relaxed a bit. A 9 yr old on a shipping trolley is not a hate crime is it.

TheRealMagic · 02/07/2026 07:58

I think this is one of those ones where we can debate whether gran was right or wrong - but actually, either way, it was nothing to do with you. As you said, staff had said nothing. It clearly wasn't going to be your trolley as you were shopping at the same time. It really was none of your business.

OvernightBloats · 02/07/2026 07:59

Unnecessarily, mean comment to make. You should have kept your thoughts to yourself.
You are not the trolley police. The staff will talk to the granny if they have a problem with it.

Practically everything sold in M&S is in packaging so I couldn't worry about hygiene. There are probably more germs on the trolley handles (and self-service tills if you are using them) than anywhere else.

cluckinell2 · 02/07/2026 07:49

There are such bigger things to worry about in life. I can’t believe you actually said this to them. I too, would have tutted and eye rolled then carried on with my day.

Why though?
The people who go around eye rolling and tutting at people are beyond fucking exhausting, get a life.

hugasaurus · 02/07/2026 08:01

Just take the day off, dude.

bunnypenny · 02/07/2026 08:02

Why are some mumsnetters such complete and utter fannies?

Didimum · 02/07/2026 08:06

Take a day off, OP.

Evaka · 02/07/2026 08:07

The things people get worked up about.

BathersOnTheLine · 02/07/2026 08:09

Why don't you just put open up your Bag For Life bags in the trolley and put the food straight in there.

If there's self scanning at the supermarket that's what you do anyway.
If there's no self scanning just empty the bags on the the belt and fill them up again.

That said it's bloody odd for an 8 year old to be in a trolley.

Cherrytree86 · 02/07/2026 08:09

YANBU, OP.

it’s unhygienic. Likely be remnants of dog shit and all sorts on their shoes. Minging

plus children should be active and walking around, it’s good for them

Beachbeach · 02/07/2026 08:12

Trolley will be filthy anyway. Boxes of raw chicken and meat have been placed there.

I hate to see kids in trollies at the supermarket.

I saw this happen on more than one occasion when I worked in a supermarket. No deaths fortunately but ine particular parent used to allow a kid of about 6 or 7 to go round stood up in the trolley, despite being warned by staff. The trolley tipped up and the kid faceplanted the floor. Parents of course tried to blame the company but CCTV showed the whole thing clearly.
Also had customers complaining that children with dog shit on their shoes have transferred it onto their shopping. Not particularly pleasant for those just trying to shop but heyho, if little Jaydenkayden and little Nevaehdemileigh want to sit in the shopping trolley, nobody must question it 😬

Ill get my coat

NarnianQueen · 02/07/2026 07:38

I would assume all trolleys and baskets are dirty tbh
The handles probably have more bacteria on them than the bottom of a kids shoes!

Added to the fact trolleys live outside

Cherrytree86 · 02/07/2026 08:16

Nomorefcukstogive · 02/07/2026 08:13

So? They don’t need to be made even more dirty by having someone shoes stood all over them, do they? An 8 year old should be walking. End of

Honestly - I would have told you to fuck off.

Also, kind off grossed out - are you eating your fruit/veg unwashed? put bread in your trolley without packaging? lick your tuna cans?...

Well, some of the bakery loaves in Tesco ARE sold without packaging and don't fit in the paper bags....
