Department removed its mathematical assessment in 2020 to remove a ‘hurdle’ for candidates from ethnic minorities

AIBU to think this is bonkers.
Meritocracy has a very valid place in government.

Also any kind of cognitive test is going to be at least moderately indicative of workplace success. I’m more keen on keeping applications as open as possible so kids from non redbricks, kids who got 2.2 (or even below) kids who for whatever reason don’t have spectacular academic results yet are very capable have a chance at a graduate placement.

They have a better chance than if we just say “yeah oxbridge, give them the job”. It’s a great leveller. Removing assessment tests only disadvantages bright kids. I’d be even happier if they opened a proper apprenticeship scheme at 16 for school leavers.

I mean if I was an employer and represented a top tier highly sought after institution, I'd probably exclude those who got 2.2s and especially those who got 3rds.

As I said to get into the Indian civil service, you need stellar grades and have to complete multiple examinations.
