To be underwhelmed by the World Cup so far

This is obviously aimed at those, like me, who are football fans. So please no unoriginal comments about overpaid players, kicking a bag of air about, etc.

I’m a football fan and I just can’t get into the World Cup. Usually it feels like a big event but whilst I’ve watched some I’m not really getting into the vibe.

I’ve got a school meeting tomorrow at the same time as the England game and I was surprisingly unconcerned. Like I didn’t give a shit.

Just me? Or are others finding this too?

Well if we are talking England appart from their first game with Croatia it’s been pretty dull.

InOverMyHead84 · 01/07/2026 06:32

The football itself has been great, but the timings make it impossible to get engrossed in it.

Throw in the Americana bullshit alongside it and it just doesn't feel right.

abracadabra1980 · 01/07/2026 06:35

Same here. Personally I like a character to watch in world cups - that seems lacking at the moment. The times of the games aren't helping matters either. And a boring England team all round many of whom I've never heard of. If I can't out a face to a name I lose interest.

onmylastnerveseriously · 01/07/2026 06:50

The World Cup is next year OP

SexyFrenchDepression · 01/07/2026 07:02

I am not a huge fan of international football, I love my club but have less interest in england matches until the end stages. However I have watched a fair amount of the other matches and have enjoyed it. There have been the odd surprise result also. I literally uave no choice but to watch it, i have just paid thousands for a new garden bar room hoping that they will all bugger off down there to watch it but no DH has to have it on in the lounge and the kids down there. I am at least doom scrolling guilt free I guess 😂

Not looking forward to the 1am start next week!!

I said the exact same to DH, we've had some amazing England squads with some r3al characters, perhaps thats why we've not won for so long though, perhaps boring is good 😂 In reality even if we got to final there is no a chance in hell of us beating France if they get through.

TheChosenTwo · 01/07/2026 07:10

I don’t watch football but noticed dh and ds weren’t really bothered this time round when they are normally huge football fans.
Dh said he’s not got into it really because of the times of the games, length of time between England games (I guess because there were so many group stage matches) and just the sheer number of teams.
Bit of a shame really. Our house is usually quite buzzy during World Cup season, we normally have people round to watch the match (some of us just sit in the garden or the other room and hang out!) but nothing this year. Meh.

Lentilcakes · 01/07/2026 07:15

There just doesn’t seem to be much of a collective England atmosphere. I remember previous years we all had England flags, were excited for every match but even my big football fan husband isn’t overly obsessed!
i only really have a passing interest but will watch and support England.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 01/07/2026 07:18

The times of the games just make it too difficult to really watch/get properly in to it.

Dizzydrizzy · 01/07/2026 07:22

Less flags on cars but that’s probably understandable with the state of this country

HoraceCope · 01/07/2026 07:31

i agree, the timing is very unhelpful

For the love of God will you let this lie die. America had nothing to do with the hydration breaks. That was FIFA, and has been in place for WCs that have also been in place in hot environments. Stop blaming America for everything.

Ahh yes, the incorruptible, famously un-bribeable last bastion of decency FIFA!

You're right other world cups have had hydration breaks In hot environments This is the first time they've been across the board regardless of temperature/weather.

It is funny watching people hydrate in the pissing rain though!

darksideofthetoon · 01/07/2026 07:56

I’m really enjoying it despite the late kick offs and Scotland playing diabolically.

Some great games and big names in form. Lots of goals and some twists.

Loved seeing Norway get through to the last 16 yesterday.

France look hard to beat.

Beamsss · 01/07/2026 08:08

I think the group stages always feel a bit like that, and particualrly so this time with so few teams leaving at the end of it. It was very easy for the "big" sides and no surprises.

This next round is better though. I enjoyed the Germany game and I happened to be in the pub with some Ivory Coast fans for last night's. That was a lot of fun!

MyGrains · 01/07/2026 08:18

Whilst I am not a huge football fan, I always watch the World Cup and love it. But this year, I have not even watched any England games or anyone yet. Not sure why.

Secretseverywhere · 01/07/2026 08:33

I’ve quite enjoyed it this time around. Scottish so maybe just happy to take part! I think France will win it tbh although I’d be happy if England did.

With some of the big European teams heading home earlier than expected, I wonder if FIFA will be changing the rules on dual nationals again.

Because it's not fair that one game gets breaks but the others don't. I know that FIFA is incredibly corrupt. Everyone knows that. But hydration breaks are not a big deal. Why are Europeans acting like it is?

We have hydration breaks in UK league games when it's hot enough, but it's a break for a quick swig and back to it. Not a team talk and refocus.

Making it a game of four quarters changes the flow of it completely.

BurnoutBee · 01/07/2026 08:42

The vibe is awful in America. I suspect if it had been in Europe it would have felt more like football and not soccer. Tbh it was all over for me as soon as I saw the Mexican wave 🤦‍♀️.

The Americans just don’t do football… it’s all a bit soccer for me 😂

Duejuly26 · 01/07/2026 08:51

I think the timings have had a massive impact. Even if I’ve not gone to watch games out, there’s normally an excitement in the local pubs etc prior to matches which can get everyone involved, but with the timings of these matches the volume of people watching is a lot less I’d say. Me and DH contemplated watching the France match last night but then when we realised it was 10pm and we had to get up at 5.30 we decided against it!

…plus at 39 weeks pregnant I’m missing a
pint while watching 😂

nam3c4ang3 · 01/07/2026 08:53

Im absolutely enjoying it - are you sure your a fan OP? You dont sound like it...

Glasgew1770 · 01/07/2026 09:00

I don’t dispute there have been some entertaining games and great goals, etc. Watched France last night and marvelled at Mbappe’s skill even if the game didn’t have much jeopardy.

I’m talking about enjoying it more widely than that, about feeling like a big event is going on, that consumes you for weeks. I’m just not feeling it.

As for sure I’m a fan - I’ve been a season ticket holder at my local club for two decades, and used to play football to a reasonable standard in the days when women’s football didn’t have the profile it has now. I sit there come rain or shine, with very little glory to bask in!

Odd that just not getting into a tournament somehow means I’m not a fan……

It's been an absolute laugh for us tartan army in Boston and Miami but the fanzones were a bit of a joke, not at all like europe and the locals have been totally bemused and confused by it all everywhere we've visited (we've toured the US after the initial Scotland games), I knew we were in trouble when a Boston journalist said to one of us, oh you're here without a ticket for the game, why is that?? They had no clue what the fan scene is like. None the less they have been incredibly warm and welcoming and whilst noone was getting terribly political there was a definite undercurrent of relief from folks that we've all made the journey to the USA and weren't put off and had a great time, I think many day to day Americans worry about how they are perceived and I'm glad I went against my instincts and came. There's always a risk in having a world cup in countries that are not big into football, it's also a case of any port in a storm and when the time difference doesn't suit your own country it's hard, this things are getting harder and harder for countries to stage tho so we are forced to not be picky. It was fun the totally novelty for the Americans, they were completely astonished by the tartan army, I can verify the media is true. We've got the Euros next in the UK so that should be fun

I’m Irish I enjoyed every minute of watching the Tartan Army (except maybe on the pitch 😜) I loved the banter between the UK teams they are fantastic and it is such a pity the Americans don’t get it and take it far too seriously.?

I’m loving the Cape Verde story and they have an Irish captain who has a great story too.

The Americans have ruined it with the ridiculous ad breaks every quarter. And the games are all so late its no fun watching it either at home or in the pub.

Agree with this completely plus the garish countdown from 10 is so cringe.

PiggyPlumPie · 01/07/2026 09:03

I've enjoyed what I've watched but can't cope with the late nights! Managed to stay up for the last England match but not sure it was worth it.

Enjoyed Norway yesterday. I do think the time difference makes a big difference.

Love seeing the "shock" results though. The World Cup always has some corkers.
