To ask for some suggestions for a photography challenge

I love photography. Always have. But I really struggle to do much more than your usual point and shoot on holiday these days. I feel like I’ve lost a bit of my creative spark.

I am off on holiday to southern Europe this summer and want to set myself some challenges - for example colour challenges (I must take 9 photos of something pink, for example) - to try and force myself to look and take some photos.

But beyond that my creative mind is stumped. Can anyone help? !

Love this idea! How about:

Something that made you laugh
Something that smelled amazing
An interesting shadow
Only photos of circles for the next hour
Water / earth / air / fire
Something for each sign of the zodiac
Things beginning with the first letter of your name
A door that intrigues you
A beautiful window

What about a theme? Something like doorways/gates or views from windows, shapes, boats, faces etc? I've seen colour themes too which can look fab.

I've done stairs (indoors in castles/restaurants/lighthouses, outdoors onto beaches, alleyways and monuments), rooftops, street name signs and cobbled streets/grates before.

Things that look like a letter of the alphabet.

Specific colours are fine but how about taking black and white photos?
Macro shots ?

TheFlyingPenguin · 30/06/2026 20:29

how about old graveyards (interesting headstones) and/or churches. maybe try black and white photos.

theme of history - old things.

letmedowngentle · 30/06/2026 20:31

Black and white is a good idea!

I kind of like the ideas of things like doors, windows, etc - one a day to form a series when I’m back, maybe?

When I was starting out my friend challenged me to take shots on the theme of rust. That was a fun one.

Find old cars and capture their imperfections.

Street photography but not including faces; capture them as they turn away or their face is obscured by something.

Capture the same spot at different times of day.

Objects capture or reflected in other things.

Right this is a random one but I've always wanted to take photos of flowers/plants growing out of cracks in walls.
I'm very bad at taking photos so I don't do it, but I think it would be strangely lovely.

What about black and white shots? The filter in the guardian newspaper has some really interesting readers photographs

Close-ups of things that typify the place you're going to - architecture, plants, animals, insects, food, people (if not intrusive), vehicles (old ones, carts and carriages etc).

I love this!

I have a 27mm prime lens so no macro for me I’m afraid

I used to give myself photography limits.

I could only take photos if...every photo contained or was...

Both red and green
Both yellow and blue
Panorama
Black and white
Focused on the foreground only with blurred background
Using the smallest aperture and the shutter speed had to be elongated to capture movement
Had some movement in it

I also would just take one manual camera such as my Holga and only use that and only allow myself 3 reels of film so every shot had to be thought through

I once just took my infrared lens and infrared film to New York on my old manual sir. Ditto the next time I only took my pinhole lens on my digital camera, that was fun.

I would also make myself delete everything apart from 3 images per day to practice quality control.

Also made myself take 3 of each image, with specific apertures to see what effects on a small, medium and large aperture for the same image.

And once in Amsterdam I got some lovely images by forcing each shot down by one or two settings on the exposure settings l. Very atmospheric.

The most important thing though is to come off the auto settings.
