AIBU to think it’s fine to use an air fryer whilst it’s inside of a cupboard?

Currently having a new kitchen installed and have requested plug sockets inside of a tall larder/pantry unit. I told the fitter I planned on putting my air fryer inside of this unit so that it didn’t have to be on display.

He told me that this would make everything inside the unit greasy - can anyone who has this set up confirm? He said the grease that accumulates inside of an oven is what would accumulate on the inside of the cupboard if I used it in there.

We did this but ended up moving it as the cupboard smelled horrible.

Terfedout · 01/07/2026 06:55

I really hope you are joking.

we have an air fryer in a pantry like you described, and I just pull it out of the cupboard to use it. I wouldn't be so worried about the grease, I'd be more worried about overheating and a fire hazard

Same. We pull it out onto the counter. It's not greasy anywhere.

IsoldeWagner · 01/07/2026 08:06

Why do you want to use an electric appliance in a cupboard? I don't get it. Surely it's safer and more convenient on a work surface?

Thanks all. I probably won’t be using in the cupboard. But I can’t believe the huge outrage or disbelief of some posters! The cupboard does actually allow for the minimum clearance distance of 15cm in all directions!

Can you have it on a platform that then rolls forward out of the cupboard? Doors open and then pull it towards you so it's clear of the cupboard? Although, I'm wondering if the steam would still go into the cupboard unless you could close the doors behind it...

My cupboard does have a worktop.

Ok. I meant a worktop rather than a shelf inside a cupboard, but no matter.

It is worktop. It’s quartz.

to all those who mentioned the amount of grease vented from an air fryer, many thanks. I definitely wont be getting one now.

I have a 'sur la table' one from Costco. It lives on my worktop, under the 'top cuboards'. For the first few months I didn't even pull it away from the wall when I used it ir turn it off at the wall. But my neighbour 'told me iff' 🤣🤣 so now I do both. I've had it about 2 years. In the cooker mintgs it's used daily, in the Warner mintgs not too much, but no grease on the wall behind it the bottom of the top cupboard. My kitchen is small & I don't have anywhere else for it to go. I wouldn't be without it, I haven't used the oven since I got it!

people seem to call a number of different things 'air fryers'. Mine is one where the drawers pull out, not one with a bowl.

FWC2026 · 01/07/2026 09:12

I think I might go & hug mine. He doesn't leave greasy crap everywhere, or smell 💁🏻‍♀️

Ok. Good luck 👍

ReflectingPool · 01/07/2026 09:15

Absolutely not. I have to clean grease residue from behind it regularly on the tile backsplash. Cupboard would be disgusting

This. Also if that's wood behind it, it would discolour and warp and risk catching fire.

Settlersa · 01/07/2026 09:28

I wouldn't, they let out slightly greasy moisture so I would just put it on the side when using, they aren't that heavy to move about

Isobel201 · 01/07/2026 10:01

I just keep mine out on the counter but it is the same colour as the the kettle so its all in keeping. It does say in the instructions to keep decent air flow around the appliance when in use.

Augustus40 · 01/07/2026 10:10

Air fryers need space at the back to ventilate properly.

saraclara · 01/07/2026 10:18

I think we need a photo of your exact cupboard. Because I'm picturing my kitchen cupboards and it would be insane to use an air fryer in mine.
But if you're taking about a pantry kind of cupboard (I actually can't picture a cupboard with a quartz worktop inside!) then I and a lot of other posters might be barking up the wrong tree.

There’s no need to be so rude - It’s hardly a tiny enclosed cupboard. The cupboard is 1.2m long and has pocket doors. It would be ‘almost’ out in the open when in use.

It’s not like I planned on putting it in a standard cupboard and closing the door on it whilst in use!

You're not stupid OP, it sounds like I have a similar set up to you. My 'cupboard' is a metre long and nearly a metre in depth with a marble countertop, once the air fryer has been pulled out a bit, it's fine to use. No grease or fires yet!

This is a mad suggestion. Craziest thing to be in a cupboard since Narnia.

Yes, a wardrobe is a cupboard, I will not be taking questions.

Amazing!

occamsrazor26 · 01/07/2026 10:49

No. Don't do this. It's not safe, and it's not hygienic.

Carriemac · 01/07/2026 10:50

Mine is in my larder / pantry and I just open the doors when in use and for a few mins afterwards . My microwave is also in it and tbh that’s the one that has a lot of steam etc

Justanothermum42 · 01/07/2026 10:57

I am surprised your kitchen designer has not discussed that with you.

Wetblanket78 · 01/07/2026 11:44

I don’t get any grease off my air fryer. But putting it in a cupboard would be a fire risk. They need ventilation they can easily overheat in an enclosed space. I have a heat proof mat under mine mainly so the work surface isn’t damaged. But I watched something on tv about air fryers it said a heat proof mat should be used.

FullLondonEye · 01/07/2026 12:12

I used to design kitchens so am very fussy about how mine looks and I hate having lots of stuff on my worktops, particularly appliances. I built in a space under the worktop for my Ninja. It's an open cupboard with the requisite air clearance around it, it has a couple of vents at the back (it doesn't back onto another cupboard, there's space there, and the walls of the cupboard have been lined with metal sheeting. Nothing melts or gets greasy, it's easy to wipe down regularly. This way I get easy access but I don't have to look at the airfryer on my worktop.

FullLondonEye · 01/07/2026 12:15

I would also point out that my under counter oven gives off far more heat than my airfryer. You can feel the difference in temperature when you touch the units and worktop around either of them. As ovens are made to go into kitchen units then any of them should be able to stand the heat of an airfryer given an open door and the minimum distance for airflow. However I've only ever used Ninjas and as someone else mentioned, I don't seem to get grease from mine. I don't know what sort of heat or grease come out of other airfryers.

I have two places it could potentially go.
these cupboards are practically identical to these.

One is a walk in corner unit, and another is a long cupboard with pocket doors.
