Could it be fractured?!

This morning my 6-year-old fell onto a wooden floor and immediately cried, saying he’d hurt his arm. He was very upset and wouldn’t move it, saying it hurt and saying his hand felt “tired/strange” with reduced movement. He sat quietly holding it for about 10–15 minutes. Out of character as today is actually his birthday and he wanted to play 🙈
Then he wanted to ride his new bike and managed this without issue, but said it hurt again when using the brake.
Since then, his symptoms have been on and off—at times he appears fine with full use of the arm (including pushing himself up and carrying things), and at other times he becomes quiet and holds the arm saying it hurts.
On the way to school he was quiet and holding it. At school he cycled again and seemed fine, but became upset at drop-off so I took him to urgent care. By the time we got there he had regained full movement and wasn’t complaining. I touched (and squished!) his arm and hand and couldn’t find any points that caused pain. I took him to school and we didn’t see anyone at urgent care.
School have since called to say he fell again on that arm at break, was upset but settled quickly, and is generally using it, though intermittently holding it and saying it hurts but then resting his chin on it like it’s fine again 🤦🏽‍♀️
I’m unsure whether this is just a bruise or if I should take him to A&E.

My daughter was the same last week. School hinted to see a doctor, but watching her play i was fairly confident it was ok.
She complains a lot! Low pain threshold.

Seems completely recovered now after a week.

You know your child though. I watched mine digging on beach and felt no way she had a broken arm!

We are here! Hopefully not all night 😩

I hope it’s quick for you! I also hope it turns out to not be fractured! Good luck and say happy birthday from all of us!

jammiepodger · 30/06/2026 20:20

Both of my DCs have has small breaks recently that initially didn’t seem too bad but we then went and got checked a couple of days later “just in case”. We’re lucky here that GPs can refer to a walk in X-ray service at our local hospital once they’ve checked it. Much nicer than sitting in A&E.

Hope you don’t have to wait too long, OP.

Fatiguedwithlife · 30/06/2026 20:25

Kids are strange, may well have a small fracture. May be fine. Hope you’re not waiting too long!

MrSchubertWhiskers · 30/06/2026 20:34

Glad you took him, I've had sprains 10x more painful than the double-fracture I had

i was just about to say this, sprains can be more painful.

Why on earth didn't you go immediately? Some parents are so strange

It’s pretty normal to see how things go, even for a day or so. Unless the bone is sticking out (which you would probably notice), or there is significant neuro / vascular issues, or loss of function it’s reasonable to wait and see. Did you take you child to A&E every time their temperature got about 38 degrees?

Haha . Except actually Everytime my son hit 38 degrees he'd have a prolonged febrile seizure (think up to an hour, blue lights etc every effing 4-6 weeks for 2-3 years)

But that seems to mean with mine if they're conscious and talking I'm.now unusually chilled. But a child holding their arm after a witnessed fall on a hard surface unable to take part in some activities on their birthday I'd get seen. But then I have very hardy kids, if they say they're in pain it's bad. They are of the type who jump up going 'its ok I'm ok' so if they admit pain it's bad.

lljkk · 01/07/2026 08:48

What did you find out, OP? I hope he's feeling better. x

Seizures lasting an hour! 😧 terrifying!

Loulou4022 · 01/07/2026 09:23

Every single time I’ve seen a child cradling their arm it’s been broken! (25years in a school
so seen a few). Pop along to A&E to get it checked out.

GooGoo30 · 01/07/2026 10:24

A&E so busy last night, they checked x ray briefly and saw nothing too alarming so sent us home due to how busy it was on the understanding we needed to come back today to be reassessed. Been here 2 hours already 🙈
more painful today and it woke him in the night a couple of times BUT still using it 80% of the time normally so I still don’t know what they’ll say…

I'm glad you're getting him seen OP.

Shinyandnew1 · 01/07/2026 16:10

Have you been seen?

GooGoo30 · 01/07/2026 19:56

A buckle fracture! Happy Birthday!! 🙈😂

Even in the waiting room and during x ray he was using it and being very happy. Didn’t present as someone in pain!!!

Thanks for all the lovely messages and advice x

Oh no OP I’m sorry. I’ve been checking in hoping that it would turn out to be a sprain!
I am glad he’s coping well though, it’s amazing how much more resilient children are than us adults 😂 best wishes for a speedy recovery

I had a green stick fracture when I was 11 that needed surgical repositioning. It didn’t hurt much at all, just felt weird and wobbly!

HoraceCope · 01/07/2026 21:32

Ooh that's a story for your ds, I hope he is ok, is it in a cast?
