I’ve been sacked and everyone in the office seems to have blocked me on email and WhatsApp.

I was told on Thursday that Friday would be my last day. No feedback about my performance, no indication that I wasn’t on track to pass my probation. The issue is that I work overseas, and have until tomorrow to pack up and clear my house. I was on leave last week. I need them to book me another couple of suitcases of excess baggage. I messaged my PA to see if she could do this, and it went to one grey tick. Same for other colleague. No response to emails either. I’m in fucking chaos here, trying to pack up, I’ve got all my winter clothes as well as summer clothes, some mugs, and kitchen equipment. I don’t want to dump it, and will pay for more excess baggage if I have to. But I just find it very odd that they have all blocked me. My PA was really upset when she found out, and called me. I don’t understand why I’m being treated like a pariah. I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong (my boss confirmed this), they’ve just decided they don’t need me after all.

Well if you are still in contact with your PA cant she sort out what you need?

CatesandAle · 29/06/2026 21:38

This sounds very odd and also confusing. Why do you need to leave your house so quickly? Is it paid for by work and tied to the role? Or is your visa expiring as you’re no longer employed?

It seems especially strange as it sounds like you’re in quite a senior role? How long have you been there?

Pistachiocake · 29/06/2026 21:39

Can't you call the main office line/head office? If need be using customer numbers, if it's that kind of business?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 29/06/2026 21:48

It sounds like they've been told to, if everyone has done it.

Have you tried contacting your ex boss rather than peers or people who reported to you?

Try the main switchboard?

I’m not though. She has blocked me too. I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and email my boss.

Yes, the house is linked to my employment and visa. They have apparently already told immigration that I am leaving.

I’ve been working here for nine months but the first three were on a temporary contract. It’s literally days before my probation is up. I took on a number of big projects a few weeks ago and there is no-one to take them on. I guess they might hire someone else, but that will delay the work.

At a guess, were your work devices covered by an IT team?. When they let you go, IT were told to block you so that’s why nothing will get through.

Lemonfrost · 29/06/2026 22:13

There has to be more to this, surely?

WhaleEye · 29/06/2026 22:15

It looks as if you’re on your own for getting back to the uk OP.
If the accommodation is linked to the job you’ll probably have box up stuff you can’t take and arrange for it to be sent on, then check into a hotel and sort the first flight home.

Livingthebestlife · 29/06/2026 22:24

That's really strange. When they told you Thursday that Friday was your last day did you not ask why you failed your probation or that you needed time to pack and vacate the property. Was this even mentioned in the interview or after the 3 month temporary contract ended regarding what happens if you fail your probation.

It does seem very strange everyone is not answering you on all platforms, I would definitely phone the old boss and get a few things answered as well as things needed like cases etc

19lottie82 · 29/06/2026 22:25

It’s hard to say, it might be standard practise when someone is let go with the company, or there might be more to it.

are you friends with any of your ex colleagues out of work?

IsItSummerSoon · 29/06/2026 22:33

it sounds like things are very rushed right now. Who is creating that feeling of urgency for you to leave the house and country?

Yes, the house is linked to my employment and visa. They have apparently already told immigration that I am leaving.

What does that mean in practical terms? Do you now have to leave by a certain time?

I’d be tempted to try and slow things down and give myself some space to think.

EmeraldRoulette · 29/06/2026 22:46

Is it a company phone?

I know someone that who was made redundant and was told that as soon as the call was over, he would find that his laptop didn't work

I'm just thinking that the company runs your phone they might have been able to do something similar?

SackedAndFedUp · 29/06/2026 23:21

It’s not a company phone. We had work numbers through Teams but nobody used them. My flight is booked and I’m packing what I can.

Of course I asked why I failed my probation. I didn’t get a satisfactory answer. I got “oh it’s not your fault, it’s ours” and “we really need someone who knows how we produce the widgets.” They knew I had no background in this and nor do I need it for this job. I just want to leave and put all this behind me now.

It’s a rubbish way to treat someone OP. Are you in the USA?

AdjectiveColourNoun · 29/06/2026 23:41

Sorry OP. Sounds horrendous. I don’t really understand how this is legal. Certainly not very humane.

Sidebeforeself · 30/06/2026 07:37

But you said your PA called you.. have you tried ringing her back instead of messaging?

Wordsmithery · 30/06/2026 07:48

Borrow a phone from a friend and message your PA from that one.

The company behaviour is all very odd and possibly not legal but you may not want to pursue that angle.

Sorry, OP. It sounds devastating.

Loubissou · 30/06/2026 08:04

It is brutal, but surely this is because she is no longer your PA. They will have booked a standard package in accordance with their policy. Anything in excess is up to you.

SackedAndFedUp · 30/06/2026 09:50

Finally got through on the general office email from another email address. Very apologetic and “they will see what they can do.”

This is explained in the OP. She works overseas and the house is tied to the role.

I think it would be totally reasonable to call back every half hour and say if you have contact details for someone who can help me out here, I’m happy to follow up. Lean heavily on ‘this is so stressful.’

It’s implied, but not explained, in the OP that the house is tied to the role. Hence why I asked the question.
