Live overseas in a beach, tourist place. We have a pool and can walk to the beach. Lots of restaurants and things going on nearby.
Every year Dh is happy to spend his two weeks going to the local beach and doing Bbqs at home. He will go for a few days camping an hour away or we do a nice 4 * hotel around an hour away for a couple of days some years.
Would this be a good enough holiday for you?
We have a young Dc

Absolutely not.

i live on the edge of the Lake District, beautiful part of the world but doesn’t mean I want to spend all
of my holidays here!

Dunnowhattothinkreally · 28/06/2026 22:28

To add, we travelled the world when younger and travelled a lot before Dc

It sounds great. I also live in a beachy tourist area but like to get away for a change of scenery. If you can get that an hour from home, happy days.

NuffSaidSam · 28/06/2026 22:29

Yeah, it would be ok for me for a few years while DC are small. Not forever, but for a few years... absolutely.

It depends... do you do these things normally? Like do you regularly go to the local beach? Have BBQs often?

Do you want to experience something different? Would you for example like a skiing or adventure holiday?

The biggest thing for me on a holiday is a) good weather (which you probably have ordinarily) and b) eating out for dinner. I'm more than happy to stay in for breakfast / lunch and come home and chill out after dinner but I 100% hate cooking and cleaning up from dinner on holidays. I love to try traditional dishes too from wherever we visit.

But having said that... we don't holiday every year just every 2-3 years depending on our budget.

Crispsandcola · 28/06/2026 22:31

When your kids are young, going away isn't a holiday - it's just doing the same stuff you do at home but in less space and with less equipment. Sounds like you've got a good setup and don't really need to do the stress and expense of a holiday away.

Miranda65 · 28/06/2026 22:31

No. The point of a holiday is to go somewhere different, and be away from home.

mynameiscalypso · 28/06/2026 22:32

I don’t really like to holiday ‘at home’ because it’s not much of a holiday, even if I’m doing holiday stuff. You still have to remember to put the bins out and make sure you have enough milk for breakfast etc. I find it hard to switch off.

Splashduck · 28/06/2026 22:33

Nice staycation you describe.

but for a holiday I want to be out of my usual environment

away from the chores and paperwork I should be doing and going somewhere a little bit different and certainly out of my own house .

SquigglePigs · 28/06/2026 22:33

With small children, yes, absolutely. Sounds lovely! Time to be more adventurous when they're a bit bigger.

Orlando27 · 28/06/2026 22:37

doesn't sound like much of a holiday to me no.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/06/2026 22:39

As long as you’re staying somewhere nice and there’s lots to do and you can eat out and it’s a proper holiday for you then with small children it’s fairly stress free.

Once they’re old enough to travel and really enjoy it without it being difficult then go for it.

Happyhappyzoozoo · 28/06/2026 23:04

I think I’d happy with that if we had something different maybe every 3rd year or so.
But really it doesn’t matter what everyone else would be happy with, it’s your holidays - it has to be what you and your family is happy with.

Gapeoa · 28/06/2026 23:17

No, definitely not. I love to go away and visit other countries, see different cultures, hear different languages and see different wildlife. I live in a tourist hotspot and make the most of it all year around, but I still want a proper holiday (overseas or elsewhere in the UK) with my dcs every year.

DancingNotDrowning · 28/06/2026 23:53

No because if I’m at home I’ll get sucked into gardening and cooking and organising and seeing friends and going to my usual haunts.

all of which is fine and much of which i enjoy but i go on holiday for a break.

BauhausOfEliott · 29/06/2026 00:08

I would always want to go further away from home, personally. But it really doesn’t matter what anyone would want. It’s what you want that matters.

RubyPowderPuff · 29/06/2026 00:26

Yes, its enough especially with young children.

JLou08 · 29/06/2026 00:28

No. I live near a lovely beach and have some beautiful countryside walks within an hours drive. I visit them year round, it wouldn't be a holiday for me. I like a change of scenery. I also like to be away from home where there are always plenty of jobs around the house that need doing. They're out of mind when I go away on holiday and I'm a lot more relaxed.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/06/2026 00:29

Whilst you have small children it sounds nice and quite sensible really.

I’m sure you’ll travel more again when they’re older.

I do enjoy travelling but it’s ok to take breaks from it.
