‘Pierce the film’ but I’ve thrown away the film

I have BU and dumb, obviously. Just making a ready meal dinner (Wasabi sweet chilli chicken yasikoba from the Co-Op for anyone who cares), and I pulled the film off without thinking, only to see that the instructions of course tell you to leave the film on just pierce it. Film had already gone in bin and isn’t recoverable. Have I ruined dinner? I’m supposed to cook it at gas mark 6 for 20 minutes. I’m hoping there’s a solution but not quite sure how to rescue it. Should I put tinfoil over the top and pierce it? Cling film? (Or will that melt)? Do I need to cook it for longer? Or just put in the oven without the film, and it will be fine? I’m assuming the point of the film is that it helps the steam to stay inside and heat up the meal, so I’m guessing without the film it might need cooking for longer?

Help me Mumsnet! I was looking forward to a nice relaxing Sunday evening dinner before getting ready for the week, and I would prefer not to give myself food poisoning.

I would it foul on it. It won’t seal so no need for holes in it.

londontoibiza · 28/06/2026 18:33

It’ll be fine

How on earth could the lack of a piece of plastic film on your food give you food poisoning? Do you really think this?

worldshottestmom · 28/06/2026 18:35

Literally just tip it onto a plate and put it in the oven

It’s meat, it presumably needs to reach a certain temperature to kill the bacteria, and I assume the film was meant to help retain the steam and make it hotter (and stay moist, maybe)?

If it’s going in the oven then put some foil loosely over it to stop it drying out. It’ll be fine.

It’ll just be to stop it browning too much.

The film was likely meant to stop it drying out.

Stick foil on it.

You aren’t going to get food poisoning from a lack of film

CatesandAle · 28/06/2026 18:41

Ok thanks for the replies, I’ve put some foil on top as it did look like it might be burning a bit

The film is just to stop it drying out too much/over browning. It'll be fine.

How can you edit, yet still get it so wrong? 🤣
