Neighbour’s dog

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 27/06/2026 20:39

Our neighbours dog can get into our garden as there is a gap in the hedge. I don’t generally mind. But over the last few days it’s taken to crapping in my garden. I’ve had to clean up 6 or more poops. The reason I don’t own a dog is because dog crap makes me vomit and I know I couldn’t clean up after one every day. Now, I want to go next door and ask them nicely to please keep an eye on where the dog goes and give them permission to come into the garden (which they can easily without asking) to clean up after the dog. Husband says it’ll cause trouble and I’m being a ‘Karen’ (I hate the use of Karen but that’s another story) they are fairly new neighbours. Thoughts??

Fuck that. id chuck it over their fence.

MyDogTails · 27/06/2026 20:41

Ask them to mend the gap in the fence.
Dogs are programmed not to poo in their own territory if they can avoid it so he has worked out a clever new approach. Merely asking them to clean up is no good.

Hatty65 · 27/06/2026 20:42

Block the gap in the hedge?

MyDeepAmberDog · 27/06/2026 20:42

I think you should politely mention that they need to secure their garden. It’s not acceptable to have to deal with poo.

I’d be furious in your position and I have a dog!

bridgetreilly · 27/06/2026 20:43

Whoever owns the boundary needs to fix it.

RubyFatball · 27/06/2026 20:44

“Your lovely dog has worked out how to get into our garden! There must be a gap in the hedge. Would you mind popping over to clean up after him please - he’s left a few “suprises” on the grass. And think you’re going to need to plug the gap stat! Cheers have a good evening x”

HaveCreditWillShop · 27/06/2026 20:44

This is insanity - tell them to block up the hedge! The neighbours likely don’t realise the dog is doing it - but don’t invite them into your garden, that’s a recipe for disaster. I would politely tell them that you’re sure they don’t realise but wanted to make them aware and can they secure the fencing please. They’re the ones with the dog so let them secure the garden.

ThirdStorm · 27/06/2026 20:45

YABU for not blocking/mending the fence to prevent it.

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 27/06/2026 20:52

it’s a hedge and there’a loads of gaps. I don’t really think they’re blockable. I’m not paying for a fence because they let their dog run wild. My sister has dogs and when she lets them into the garden she keeps an eye on them
so they don’t escape. The other side put up a fence on their side of the hedge to keep their dogs in. I’ll suggest they do the same. All the poop
has gone in their black bin. I will go over tomorrow and politely ask that they find a way to block the gaps from their side. Maybe giving them access to the garden isn’t the right idea 🤔 I think I’ll just go round every time it happens! I actually have a thing about dog poo it really makes me want to vomit. I just can’t handle it. Hence why we don’t have a dog!

I don’t think that’s down to me. I’m going to ask them to do it.

It is a lovely dog. I don’t hate the dog I hate the dog crap! I’m going to do just that.

You would be absolutely right to ask them to deal with it.

Letting a dig poo in someone’s garden is not on.

id listen to the other posters they sound more rational 😂

Buildingthefuture · 27/06/2026 20:58

As a dog owner, I am responsible for their shit, and also for keeping them contained within my own property. Believe me, secure fencing is absolutely possible and also a necessity.
Go knock on the door and tell them the dog is getting into your garden and shitting (I have to be honest, they are either thick as mince, or they already know this) and it’s not acceptable. They either fence securely or you will be flinging shit back in their direction. And do it too. I would never allow any of my dogs to do this!

Cathmawr · 27/06/2026 20:58

Obviously it would not be unreasonable to tell the neighbours to pick up their own dogs shit! 🤣 your husband is insane.

The onus is on them to sort the holes in the hedge as they're the ones with the dog escaping through it.

My 5 doors down neighbour once got in the back of ours (via a ROW path) and I was straight round to ask them to please pick up the poo it did on me lawn. I was very polite, they were very polite, it was not at all awkward or confrontational and most importantly I did not have to pick up random dog poo

MightyDandelionEsq · 27/06/2026 21:05

If it doesn’t bother your husband then send him out to clean it all up. See how quick he changes his tune.

I hate dog muck, it doesn’t come completely off the grass and leaves residue. Grim.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 27/06/2026 21:40

It's a bit weird that they haven't secured their garden. Surely they have no idea whether their dog can escape into the street or into other gardens. Why not say that your garden isn't secure?

WhatAMarvelousTune · 27/06/2026 21:52

They need to secure their dog. It doesn’t matter whose boundary it is, their dog is their responsibility eg if there was no fence round your front garden, it would be their responsibility to stop their dog shitting on it.

Obviously it may come down to you so it if they are irresponsible owners (which tbh it sounds like they are). Plant something prickly. Spray the dog with water. Pick the shit up and leave it on their doorstep. Tell them you’ve got plants which are poisonous to dogs (I’m not suggesting you actually poison their dog, just tell them your garden is not safe and therefore they need to keep it out).

Plmnki · 27/06/2026 21:59

Two things:

  1. buy £20 worth of chicken wire and block the fence yourself. It’s insane how British people don’t understand fencing.
  2. your husband is a dick, I don’t have a solution for that.
from this, (1) will fix the dog issue,( 2.) It’s up to you to sort out
whowhatwerewhy · 27/06/2026 22:14

A roll of chicken wire should do the trick, I have it attached to my hedge to keep my dogs in .

SooPanda · 27/06/2026 22:17

Check the deeds to see who is responsible for that side. If it’s them, you can suggest that they put up a fence to keep their dog safe and confined to their own garden. If it’s your boundary then you can put whatever fence you want up.

They know. I’ve returned it to them many times! The pooping is recent development.

Even if it’s their boundary, she can put up whatever fence she wants, as long as it’s on her side.

Yetone · 27/06/2026 23:15

Can the dog get any further than your garden? Any dog coming into
my garden would find its way on to the street because during the day I leave my side gate open.
