becos I was on mat leave my automatic repayments on student loan I had while doing teacher training stopped. Bailiifs tracked me down through my relatives to tell me I was in arrears of about a grand. Had some utter slimey shark then on phone trying to 'cut me a deal' where if I 'showed willing' by sending whatever I could afford he would send me the deferment form I should have got 9 months ago. Dodgey as fuck!!! Any one got any legal advice or something as 'what I can afford' is NOWT.

they did this to me. I have been at my current address for 5 years, I've even had a student loan whilst I've been here yet they sought fit to send my deferment papers and letters to an address I lived in 9 years ago!!! I had a whopping 1K bill once I phoned them because they were pestering my mum. I've got to put a complaint in.

Phone the Student Loan company tomorrow, they will give you the phone number of the 'company' they have passed your account to. I only pay the arrears off, not all the loan. Kick up a stink and keep them on the phone as long as you can. Ask for proof of the bailiff. If they have not ordered one contact the police. Do not let them in your house!

They are completely incompetent.

LazyLinePainterJane · 24/06/2008 20:36

bluewolf are you sure its not a scam? Surely you would have letters and whatnot if you were defaulting? Has someone got hold of your details maybe and trying to scare you into paying up?

You need to investigate.

lulumama · 24/06/2008 20:37

i think you need to contact the student loans people directly

it is partially your fault as you did not defer your payments, but if they have not sent anything to you or written to you , and then got the bailiffs involved , that is wrong

speak to tehm tomorrow, and get the person;s name who you speak to and ask them to stop the bailiffs .

bluewolf · 24/06/2008 21:07

I will do that. I'll speak to the proper student loans people and tell them what is going on in their name. Thanks for the advice. I feel like an idiot for not being more on top of how things would stop once I was off work and pregnant. But then I wasn't exactly thinking about my debts etc at the time. Might have to blame the selfish foetus for dancing when i should have been concentrating on outgoings.

It's not you. They are just crap .

ravenAK · 24/06/2008 21:28

consumeractiongroup has a section for student issues. They are v good, post on there!

Incidentally, bailiffs are dodgy like fish are wet. Don't agree ANYTHING until you've got some proper advice!

LiegeAndLief · 25/06/2008 14:06

This sounds dodgy to me.

I could be wrong, but I think if you have a student loan where it gets taken directly out of your payslip you don't have to defer. If you are earning money, they take some of it, if you aren't, they don't. The deferment is for the old style loans (like I have) where they take a fixed amount every month from your bank account, not direct from your payslip. I don't think you have done anything wrong and the bailiff sounds like a scam. Hope you get on ok when you ring them.
