Unreasonable - time to scrap
Not unreasonable - worth the money

What do YOU think OP?

I think it is embarrassing having a Royal Family. They are no better than anyone. Pathetic flashy outfits loarding it over everyone.

Worth every penny.

They are very big numbers.

Could we have some sort of link or something - where id you get them from?

Google! The Crown Estate pays a fuck ton of tax to the treasury and, contrary to what PP said, no the Crown Estate is not owned by the UK government, it is land that “belongs” to the reigning Monarch, although he can’t sell nor personally profit from it. Instead the Crown operates as a public institution, pays billions in tax and in return, the Royal family receive a Sovereign Grant, which is far, far less than they pay in tax.

When you comment "pathetic flashy outfits" are you referring to the Coronation Robes? 😂

On the contrary, there are thousands of tourists who come specifically to see Royal weddings, trooping of the colour etc. I was working in Central London while the late Queen was lying in state and the city was packed with Americans who came to pay their respects.

I’m sure you’re aware that weddings and deaths are rather rare events for the royals. It smacks of desperation to use those to justify this so-called money they bring in. I work with so many people abroad and have lots and lots of friends. I have never once even had one person ask about the royal family. Or trooping of the colour - you can’t be serious 😂

Biggest benefit scroungers in the UK.

I'll step forward as a net contributor to complain about this cost. In a "slimmed down" monarchy, where's the saving? How does £100million grant, plus income from their estates result in tax bills of c £7m for prince William and c£12m for the king? Will we plebs ever get to see a full set of accounts? What was the objective or reason for refurbishing Buckingham Palace as it's not a home, nor an office space that can be used by other public services. The royal family play's us for fools.

Because it’s a national monument? Would you have it knocked down?
They pay their way. I can’t bring myself to get upset about it and as for it being “embarrassing” op? Why is it? Personally it’s nothing to do with you and they are easy to avoid if you don’t like them.

FudgeFudy · 27/06/2026 07:57

This business about 'They bring in more from tourism than they cost' - if it turned out that we could pass a law that said every Brit had to have their arse out in public on a Tuesday, and that brought in loads of tourist money as the foreigners came to gawp at the weirdo Brits, would we be all for that too? It's making money after all, which seems to be the only thing that matters. It seems a bit tawdry to me to have a hereditary monarchy as a means of 'choosing' our head of state in the 21st century - with the risk that it could give us a right thickie, idler or wrong 'un, just because it supposedly brings in a few quid.

I did Google it and understand that the crown estate has no legal obligation to pay any tax. Very nice indeed!

But Charles paid ~ 12m in tax so where do you get to ‘billions’? You are aware that 1b = 1000 x 1m? So that’s quite the deficit, even if we assume the other parasites royals pay some tax?

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 27/06/2026 08:01

They are part of the British state from birth. This one family of human beings. I’m always amazed it’s still legal.

Yes thank you, I am fully aware of how much a billion is!! Google taxes paid by the Crown Estate. It is readily available….you are aware of how to use the internet? 🤣🤣🤣

Tutorpuzzle · 27/06/2026 08:07

They are just an anachronistic embarrassment.

Andrew MW? Knew about him for years, only did something when he genuinely began to threaten the existence of the institution.

Royal train journey at 40k per trip? Don’t mind if I do. (And yes, I know it’s going, but it took them long enough.)

A society wedding and the Epsom Derby or going to Normandy to commemorate D-Day amongst the ever diminishing group of veterans? Oh, society wedding, please! Pictures in the Daily Mail will always be a priority.

They are simply useless.

No tourist is coming to hang out with Charles and Camilla. They are coming to visit the tourist attractions. People would still come and visit the tourist attractions, like Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, even if the slimed down monarchy was slimmed down to none.

Edited

Yes!

I’m not sure why we have to pay so much to people who are already among the richest in the world.

I’m glad they are paying income tax at long last - how ludicrous that they were not until the recent past.

I just explained that I did and it showed nothing of what you claim. Perhaps you could send me a link?

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 27/06/2026 08:12

I think the question should be why is a ' slimmed down' Monarchy costs more than double what it was 3 years ago. The Sovereign Grant calculation needs to be changed so that it does not go up by such a ridiculous amount. I believe George Osborne 'negotiated' a situation where it always increases.

I'd argue that they were already in the U.K. on holiday, there's no proof they flew in especially

agree with others that even without a monarchy visitors will come to visit, they can still see the palaces without a royal family.
at the very least they could operate like lots of European royal families

EverythingGolden · 27/06/2026 08:14

I’ve never seen a detailed cost benefit analysis of this and I would have to see that before having a considered opinion. My instinct tells me we shouldn’t have lauded people given privileges for nothing but birthright. On the one hand Charles did an excellent diplomatic job with Trump but what if his awful brother had been born first? We have no control over it.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 27/06/2026 08:28

I think they should be slimmed right down - one family, three properties- or go.
we live next to duchy of Cornwall land - they are not good landlords.

Pethetic pettiness pointing out spelling errors. Very sad. Having people in fancy dresses waving at people from a balcony is almost as pethetic.

I mean - those costs wouldn'd disapear necessarily OP.

In my country, the office of the Governor General, which performs the same roles as the monarch in terms of legislation, hosting, travel, etc, costs about 30 million a year. And that is without the historic properties you have in the UK, and our GG does a lot less, frankly, than the monarch, and has zero tourist value .

So I'm not sure you are getting a bad deal at all.

JuliaBraverman · 27/06/2026 08:43

They are a very expensive tourist attraction but IMO worth it.

EnterQueene · 27/06/2026 08:48

Stop the sovereign grant. They'd still be obscenely wealthy but would have to learn to live within their means.

We have plenty of tourist attractions without needing a useless and venal family to ponce about in fancy dress.

It’s so interesting that when someone can’t scrape together a logical argument, (quite common when trying to defend the RF), their only resort is to try to become the Thread Police.

How dull.
