..have very old bathrooms and /or kitchens and need updating ? We are house hunting and I am genuinely perplexed by the amount of houses in this bracket that still need money spent on it ! I would have thought that a lot of houses in this bracket would be immaculate and only require new flooring or one bathroom or painting throughout but no.... out of the over 15 we looked at over 10 of them require significant work and updating. It just baffled me and I suppose I thought at this level and price most places will be in excellent condition or move ready.

In my case I bought a £450k property 25 years ago and spent the first 5 years updating it and have had four children grown up in it. Now I have a property that is apparently worth just over £1m but that isn’t a reflection of my income and so live with the changes I made 20 odd years ago that I can’t afford to replace. If I ever sell then things will be clean, tidy but dated or in need of replacing. Perhaps that’s the case with the houses you’re looking at OP?

Ive just bought a house on london/Surrey borders, the interior is about 25/30 years old and the lady had it for 40 years, i think she just didnt want to update as it is in working condition. We will renovate slowly as dont want to spend all our cash at once (especially now Burnham is coming!). I'd rather do this than have a smaller house done to someone else's tastes

I think so 💯. It's amazing how House prices went up over time and salaries have not followed suit. Thing is we have been in ours 20 years and never had the nice kitchen done....only a bathroom. Rest we lived with. Was just really looking forward to a fresher interior but I suppose this situation happens whatever scale you look at !
